David R. Mandel The Obedience Alibi Milgram 's Account of the Holocaust Reconsidered "Unable to defy the authority of the experimenter, [participantsj attribute all responsibility to him. It is the old story of 'just doing one's duty', that was heard time and again in the defence statement of the accused at Nuremberg. But it would be wrang to think of it as a thin alibi concocted for the occasion. Rather, it is a fundamental mode of thinking for a great many people once they are locked into a subordinate position in a structure of authority." {Milgram 1967, 6} Abstract: Stanley Milgram's work on obedience to authority is social psychology's most influential contribution to theorizing about Holocaust perpetration. The gist of Milgram's claims is that Holocaust perpetrators were just following orders out of a sense of obligation to their superiors. Milgram, however, never undertook a scholarly analysis of how his obedience experiments related to the Holocaust. The author first discusses the major theoretical limitations of Milgram's position and then examines the implications of Milgram's (oft-ignored) experimental manipula tions for Holocaust theorizing, contrasting a specific case of Holocaust perpetration by Reserve Police Battalion 101 of the German Order Police. lt is concluded that Milgram's empirical findings, in fact, do not support his position-one that essen tially constitutes an obedience alibi. The article ends with a discussion of some of the social dangers of the obedience alibi. 1. chapter 5 Close and Distant: The Relations between Israel and the Diaspora Ephraim Yuchtman-Ya’ar and Steven M. Cohen A Brief Demographic History The major features of contemporary relationships between the world’s two largest Jewish communities—one in the United States and the other in Israel—bear directly upon any assessment of the state of “Jewish peoplehood” during the first decade of the twenty-first century. How do members of the two communities relate to each other and to the Jewish people? To put this discus- sion into a historical context, we first turn to a brief account of the major demographic and related developments that took place between the Jewish communities in Israel and the diaspora over time. Jews have lived in the Diaspora since biblical times. During most of that long history, the Jewish population in “the Land of Israel” comprised a small, or more precisely, a very small minority of the entire world Jewry. Over the centu- ries, the Jewish Diaspora has continuously strived to keep alive its connection and devotion to Zion, though most of that effort was essentially symbolic, based on adherence to traditions and rituals but with little concrete action. The renowned Jewish medieval poet from Spain, Yehuda Halevi, expressed those sentiments in the following line from one of his most famous poems: “My heart is in the East but I am far in the West.” He himself had realized his dream and left Spain in order to settle in the home of his ancestors, but his act was a rare exception, that only a few followed. -

1 Shoah, Antisemitism, War, and Genocide: Text and the Context Yehuda Bauer Ladies and Gentlemen, Colleagues and Friends, The International Task Force for Holocaust Education, Remembrance, and Research, was founded by the then Swedish Prime Minister, Göran Persson, as an answer to a problem that was expected to be solved within a few years’ time, namely the lack of education. There had been worrying signs of a lack of knowledge about the Holocaust among Swedish youths, but there was also disillusionment with democracy generally. Mr. Persson’s government began the process of establishing, with government help, an independent, special, large organization called Levande Historia, to address the educational aspects of steps to be taken to remedy the situation. I was asked to advise in all this. In order to establish the ITF, the Prime Minister turned to President Clinton and Prime Minister Tony Blair to join, and they agreed. I was then asked to become the Academic Adviser of the new body and, as they say, the rest is history. Soon afterwards, Mr. Persson then suggested that a large inter-governmental conference should be organized that would address these concerns internationally, and I became the person responsible for the academic side, and a member of the organizing committee, consisting of important Swedish government officials, driven forward largely by Veronika Bard- Bringeus. We opened the Stockholm Forum on Holocaust Education on January 27, 2000, with a large number of governments in attendance. Out of that came the famous Stockholm Declaration, which until today forms the basis for the ITF. A great deal has changed since then. -

New Book on Revisionist-Zionist Terrorists Thomas G. Mitchell, Ph.D., an independent scholar, is an occasional contributor to our blog. His newest books are “Likud Leaders” (McFarland, 2015) and “Israel’s Security Men” (McFarland, 2015). Dr. Mitchell’s review (below), embeds Bruce Hoffman’s new book in an ongoing discussion on how important the terror/guerrilla campaigns of the two Revisionist Zionist undergrounds were in the creation of Israel. Hoffman, as well as Tablet reviewer Adam Kirsch, hedge their bets somewhat, but suggest that these terror attacks were crucial; Tom Segev, who reviewed it for the NY Times, is doubtful. Anonymous Soldiers: The Struggle for Israel 1917-47 By Bruce Hoffman, Alfred A. Knopf, 618 pp. (484 pp. of text), $35 ($25.41 on Amazon). International terrorism expert Bruce Hoffman has chosen to write a book about the exploits of the Irgun Zvai Leumi (the Irgun or Etzel) and Lehi (Stern Group) in driving the British out of Palestine in the 1940s. Why should Hoffman have spent his time researching and writing this book and why should you spend your time reading it? First, Palestine is a classic example of a victorious strategy of urban guerrilla warfare, much like Ireland from 1919 to 1921. From the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, Menahem Begin’s memoir of his life as an underground leader, The Revolt, was almost required reading for revolutionary leaders in British colonies and had a major influence with EOKA in Cyprus and the IRA in Northern Ireland. Second, Hoffman’s book tells the story of the origins of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, which is still with us today. -

Ferziger Received: 4 March 2017 / Accepted: 15 March 2017 / Published online: 24 April 2017 Ó Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2017 According to Ian Lustick, Israel has built and, in turn, is dominated by an overemphasized Holocaust ethos that he calls ‘‘Holocaustia.’’ To be sure, his extensive essay describes three other distinct Holocaust narratives that emerged in the course of Israel’s history. But the central focus of the article is on this fourth one, its assumed domination of contemporary Israeli discourse, and its implications for the Israel-Arab conflict. As Lustick argues: Contemporary Israel is marked unmistakably with ‘‘Holocaustia,’’ by which I mean a universe of discourse based on the centrality in Jewish life of the Holocaust, its effects, and memories of it. REVIEWS | 159 Sacred Landscape: The Buried History of the Holy Land Since 1948. By Meron Benvenisti (trans. Maxine Kaufman-Lacusta) (Berkeley, Univer- sity of California Press, 2000) 366 pp. $35.00 Benvenisti has written a provocative but compassionate book with two purposes that appear to contradict each other. First, he traces the process by which war and expulsion transformed the map of Arab Palestine into the map of modern Israel. Then he advances the case that there is still sufªcient historical and physical space for both peoples to share their homeland, even though the Palestinian homeland is physically unrecog- nizable today. Benvenisti concentrates his research on the part of Palestine that be- came Israel in 1948, where an Arab landscape was entirely replaced by a Jewish landscape. When Palestinians claim the right to return to Pales- tine, they mean, ªrst and foremost, Israel, and not the West Bank and Gaza. Geographers will ªnd illuminating those sections of the book that focus on toponymistics, or the assignment of geographical names. Even before the end of the British Mandate, Zionist geographers, including Benvenisti’s father, had begun to attach Hebrew names to Arab sites. This effort accelerated after Israel’s establishment in 1948, as various Is- raeli commissions undertook to make permanent the facts of war. In this way, the map of Arab Palestine was systematically transformed into a modern Israeli map. Benvenisti estimates that 9,000 villages, ruins, and ºora and fauna of Palestine, all with Arabic names, were systematically renamed in Hebrew. Most controversial was the physical takeover of sites sacred to Mus- lims.
