An hour prior to lighting the bonfire, cadets gathered for music from campus radio station KAFA. The rally included addresses by Brig. Gen. Susan Desjardins, the Commandant of Cadets and by head football coach Troy Calhoun, plus performances by the Academy cheerleaders, the Drum and Bugle Corps and the Wings of Blue Parachute Team. A spirit dinner was served and cadets lined up to form the Falcon Walk welcoming the football team to the celebration. Morris All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Crucibles of Virtue and Vice: The Acculturation of Transatlantic Army Officers, 1815-1945 John F. Morris Throughout the long nineteenth century, the European Great Powers and, after 1865, the United States competed for global dominance, and they regularly used their armies to do so. While many historians have commented on the culture of these armies’ officer corps, few have looked to the acculturation process itself that occurred at secondary schools and academies for future officers, and even fewer have compared different formative systems. In this study, I home in on three distinct models of officer acculturation—the British public schools, the monarchical cadet schools in Imperial Germany, Austria, and Russia, and the US Military Academy—which instilled the shared and recursive sets of values and behaviors that constituted European and American officer cultures. Specifically, I examine not the curricula, policies, and structures of the schools but the subterranean practices, rituals, and codes therein. What were they, how and why did they develop and change over time, which values did they transmit and which behaviors did they perpetuate, how do these relate to nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century social and cultural phenomena, and what sort of ethos did they produce among transatlantic army officers? Drawing on a wide array of sources in three languages, including archival material, official publications, letters and memoirs, and contemporary nonfiction and fiction, I have painted a highly detailed picture of subterranean life at the institutions in this study. -

Dogfight History
Dogfight A dogfight or dog fight is a common term used to describe close-range aerial combat between military aircraft. The term originated during World War I, and probably derives from the preferred fighter tactic of positioning one's aircraft behind the enemy aircraft. From this position, a pilot could fire his guns on the enemy without having to lead the target, and the enemy aircraft could not effectively fire back. The term came into existence because two women fighting is called a catfight, and all early fighter pilots were men, hence dogfight. This subsequently obtained its revised folk etymology about two dogs chasing each other's tails.[citation needed] Modern terminology for aerial combat between aircraft is air-to-air combat and air combat maneuvering, or ACM. F-22 Raptors over Utah in their first official deployment, Oct. 2005, simulating a dogfight. History World War I Dogfighting emerged in World War I. Aircraft were initially used as mobile observation vehicles and early pilots gave little thought to aerial combat—enemy pilots at first simply exchanged waves. Intrepid pilots decided to interfere with enemy reconnaissance by improvised means, including throwing bricks, grenades and sometimes rope, which they hoped would entangle the enemy plane's propeller. This progressed to pilots firing hand-held guns at enemy planes. Once machine guns were mounted to the plane, either in a turret or higher on the wings of early biplanes, the era of air combat began. The Germans acquired an early air superiority due to the invention of synchronization gear in 1915. During the first part of the war there was no established tactical doctrine for air-to-air combat. -

The Missile Badge Heraldry The first distinctive missile badge was established May 23, 1958, to recognize those within the Air Force who had a direct role in the development, maintenance or operation of guided missiles. The badge was first called the Guided Missile Insignia and was authorized for those who performed duty in or were associated with the Snark, Atlas, Goose, Thor, Jupiter, Matador, Mace, Bomarc, Titan and Minuteman missile systems. In 1963, the name was changed to the Missileman Badge and three levels of expertise were established: Basic, Senior, and Master Missileman. The honor of wearing the badge went to those who completed specialized missile training. In April 1979, the name of the Missileman Badge was once again changed, this time to simply Missile Badge, deleting any reference to gender. In addition to the original missile systems, the Missile Badge is now awarded to personnel in the Peacekeeper, Air Launched Cruise Missile, Conventional Air Launched Cruise Missile and Advanced Cruise Missile weapon systems. In 1988, with the approval of the “Missile Operations Designator,” a wreath encircling the Missile Badge, the original Missile Badge became a badge awarded exclusively to missile maintainers. In 2004, the Missile Badge was approved for wear by officers who had graduated the Conventional Munitions Officer Course and supervised 2M/W personnel in the maintenance, loading and unloading of guided missiles or missile systems for 12 months. -

Anderson Olga Dror Angela Pulley Hudson James Burk Head of Department, David Vaught December 2015 Major Subject: History Copyright 2015 David William Bath ABSTRACT This dissertation documents how the U.S. national perspective toward ballistic nuclear missiles changed dramatically between 1957 and 1967 and how the actions and attitudes of this time brought about long term difficulties for the nation, the Air Force, and the missile community. In 1957, national leaders believed that ballistic missiles would replace the manned bomber and be used to win an anticipated third world war between communist and capitalist nations. Only ten years later, the United States was deep into a limited war in Vietnam and had all but proscribed the use of nuclear missiles. This dissertation uses oral histories, memoirs, service school theses, and formerly classified government documents and histories to determine how and why the nation changed its outlook on nuclear ballistic missiles so quickly. The dissertation contends that because scientists and engineers created the revolutionary weapon at the beginning of the Cold War, when the U.S. and U.S.S.R. were struggling for influence and power, many national leaders urged the military to design and build nuclear ballistic missiles before the Soviet Union could do so. -

The U.S. Army aims to develop leaders who can exercise excellent moral judgment, often in extreme situations, and who have the ability to solve new, complex problems as well as old problems in innovative ways. One question I aim to answer is, “How might the U.S. Army develop leaders who are deeply moral and exceptionally creative?” In order to do that well, the Army needs substantive conceptions of both character and creativity. I argue for a conception of character that places emphasis on the skill-like nature of virtue and, subsequently, a conception of creativity as, itself, a skill. The exercise of a skill is sensitive to a variety of external factors present in any given situation. The exercise of virtue is sensitive to situational factors as well, but moral education in the Army gives insufficient attention to this. While character development is about much more than merely about doing the “right thing,” one important aim is to equip agents to exercise good judgment. -
