VALAIS 117 © Lonely Planet Publications Planet Lonely © Leukerbad Matterhorn Val D'hérens Sion LANGUAGE: FRENCH & GERMAN LANGUAGE © Lonely Planet Publications 117 Valais With the 10 highest mountains in Switzerland – all over 4000m – this scenic canton offers pinnacles of pleasure for those who enjoy the high life. A certain supply of snow plus challenging slopes makes the Valais region one of the most popular in the world for skiing. A series of mountain valleys cuts south into the Alps from the Rhône valley, which slices east to west through the canton, leading to ski resorts as varied in scenery and challenges as they are culturally mixed. Depending on your choice of ski resort, you can ski from Francophone Switzerland into France or German Switzerland into Italy and back in the same day! The Alps are as stunning in summer, offering limitless hiking possibilities for all levels, including the classic Mont Blanc circuit through Switzerland, France and Italy. Long a region of struggling farmers until the advent of Alpine tourism, the canton is dot- ted with delightful high mountain villages and, lower down in the Rhône valley, vineyards that provide some of the country’s best wines – the whites are a perfect accompaniment to a local cheese speciality, raclette, about which you can learn more on p52. The Valais is not just about yomping and chomping. Martigny hosts one of the country’s key art centres and Sion is notable for its medieval core, dramatic castle and museums. Valais is also good for soothing nerves and tired muscles in its thermal bathing centres, notably those of Leukerbad. Photo: Mike Roberts The Matterhorn is undeniably the most magnificent and well-known peak in the Alps. Its bold pyramidal shape evokes emotions of wonderment and even fear in those who view it for the first time, as its four distinct faces stand omnipotent and menacing over the green meadows below. Separated by sharp ridges, the four faces are orientated to the four points of the compass, the northern aspects within Switzerland while the southern side lies in Italy. We ascend via the Hörnli Ridge that separates the rich heritage adds to the superb facilities, including North and East Faces via a long and technical route catered huts and lift systems offering services not requiring the utmost attention from climbers. • Human Nature in the Valais 1 35
    • • HUMAN NATURE IN THE VALAIS 1 35 HUMAN NATURE IN THE VALAIS BY ARNOLD LUNN (The following article is the substance of an address given by the author to the Alpine Club on May 3, I955·) NTELLECTUAL fashions are as unpredictable as fashions in dress. Morgarten was as romantic in the eyes of the eighteenth-century intellectual as Marathon. If Gibbon had been a better German scholar he would have completed his study of the rise of Switzerland rather than written of the Decline of the Roman Empire. ' There is one theme,' he wrote in 1762, ' which I should prefer to all others, the history of the liberty of the Swiss, of that independence which a brave people rescued from the House of Austria, defended against the Dauphin of France, and finally sealed ~rith the blood of Charles of Burgundy.' For Wordsworth and Shelley it was not only Switzerland but the Swiss who were romantic, but when the common people began to invade the country, the intelligentsia transferred their worship to other shrines. ' Mont Blanc at sunset,' wrote Oscar Wilde, ' flushes like a rose with shame perhaps at the prevalence of the tourists.' There are, of course, tourists who would make any self-respecting mountain blush, but it is amusing to note that people who talk like this always regard themselves as exceptions to the general rule that Switzerland has been ruined by the influx of foreigners. The verdict of the intelligentsia on Switzerland is crystallised in a remark which Graham Greene attributes to one of his characters in The Third Man.

Radek Sołtykowski i ja – Jacek Wichłacz. Termin: 8 – 16.08.2012r. Z braku miejsc w schronisku wyjście do Weisshornhutte musieliśmy przesunąć do soboty. O mały włos a aklimatyzacja Marcina i moja trwałaby o noc dłużej i to w warunkach dość ubogich.

  • Price-Martin-F ... Rockies and Swiss Alps.Pdf
Price, Martin Francis (Ph.D., Geography) Mountain forests as common-property resources: management policies and their outcomes in the Colorado Rockies and the Swiss Alps. Thesis directed by Professor Jack D. Ives This is a historical, comparative study of the development, implementation, and results of policies for managing the forests of the Colorado Rockies and the Swiss Alps, with emphasis on two study areas in each region. The Pikes Peak (Colorado) and Davos (Switzerland) areas have been adjacent to regional urban centers since the late 19th century. The Summit (Colorado) and Aletsch (Switzerland) areas have experienced a rapid change from a resource-based to a tourism-based economy since the 1950s. The study's theoretical basis is that of common-property resources. Three primary outputs of the forests are considered: wood, recreation, and protection. The latter includes both the protection of watersheds and the protection of infrastructure and settlements from natural hazards. Forest management policies date back to the 13th century in Switzerland and the late 19th century in Colorado, but were generally unsuccessful in achieving their objectives. In the late 19th century, the early foresters in each region succeeded in placing the protection of mountain forests on regional, and then national, political agendas. In consequence, by the beginning of the 20th century, federal policies were in place to ensure the continued provision of the primary functions of the forests recognized at that time: protection and timber supply. During the 20th century, these policies have been expanded, with increasing emphasis on the provision of public goods. However, most policies have been reactive, not proactive.

Richly illustrated this book offers a new perspective on the life of this celebrated traveler from Venice. Philippe Menard is professor emeritus for French Medieval Literature at the Sorbonne University and former director of the Insitute of Medieval Studies. He is a member of the Geographical Society.
