THE TRAGEDY AND TRIUMPH OF LESTER YOUNG By RON TABOR still at (or close to) the height of his creative powers, and much like Billie Holiday, Young suffered an extended period “I STAY BY MYSELF. SO HOW DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING of physical, psychological, and most believe, artistic decline, ABOUT ME?”1 which was visible to all but the most obtuse observers. Young’s death, in other words, can almost be described as protracted and public. To anyone more than a little familiar with the life of Lester Young, the great African American jazz tenor saxophonist, the What is usually accounted for as the cause of Young’s deterio- title of my essay must seem ironic. For Young’s life is more ration and ultimate demise was the time he spent in the US often described, when it is described at all, as a triumph fol- Army during the last year of World War II, when he was lowed by tragedy. This reflects the arc of his artistic career. In arrested for possession of marijuana and barbiturates and the late 1930s, Young burst upon the national jazz scene as a spent a term in the detention barracks. Nobody knows exactly star, even the star, of the fabulous Count Basie band. His new what went on there, but whatever it was, it had a profound sound and radical approach to improvisation, in the context impact on the saxophonist. According to most observers, of the innovations of the band itself, set the jazz world afire, Young emerged from the experience a changed—some say, paved the way for modern jazz, and influenced hundreds if disturbed—man.

1 The TENORSAX of COLEMAN HAWKINS “HAWK” “BEAN” PART 3 1950 - 1959 Solographer: Jan Evensmo Last update: Oct. 5, 2020 2 Born: St. Joseph, Missouri, Nov. 21, 1904 Died: NYC. May 19, 1969 Introduction: Although we were in unanimously agreement that Coleman Hawkins had reached his artistic peak in the previous decades, there is no doubt that he was held in high esteem for his recording sessions in the nineteen fifties, and that he still belonged to the greatest jazz tenorsax powers. History: Visited Europe again in late 1949-50. During the 1950s did extensive touring with Norman Granz’ Jazz at the Philharmonic, including several trips to Europe. Played solo guest-star appearances at Café Society, Terrassi’s, etc., also co-led successful quintet with Roy Eldridge. Toured American Service Bases in Europe with Illinois Jacquet’s band (autumn 154). Prolific free-lance recordings; was featured at all major festivals in USA, also appeared in the ‘Seven Ages of Jazz’ presentations in Canada (ref. John Chilton). 3 COLEMAN HAWKINS SOLOGRAPHY Continued from 1950. "Bird of prey blues". Everest label discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Everest Label Discography Everest Records was started in College Point New York in late 1958. The President of the label was Harry Belock, the Vice President was Ted Wallerstein. By 1960 Everest was located in Bayside New York. Everest recorded popular, jazz and classical and was distributed by Decca Records. From 1958 until 1960 Everest was operated as a division of the Belock Instrument Corporation which manufactured precision equipment for missiles. The A&R for the label was handled by LeRoy Holmes and Raymond Scott. Harry Belock decided to start producing records because he felt that no one was recording stereo properly, so he starting doing it himself along with engineer/producer Bert Whyte. Belock had custom recording equipment made to record on 35 magnetic film which he believed was an improvement over ½ inch magnetic tape. Everest Records only was prosperous for a few years and since Belock only controlled 22 percent of the company, as its fortunes declined the company board removed him from control. Belock left the record business and sold his interest to his accountant Bernard Solomon in 1960. Everest records declined in quality and it eventually became a reissue label that lasted into the 1980’s. Everest was purchased by the Tradition Label in 1966. This discography does not cover the Everest classical recordings, which are much prized by collectors of classical music.
