British Airways Avios are a very interesting currency in terms of airline miles, and points. Even after some devaluations, there are still excellent ways to book Business and First Class flights from various leading airlines worldwide with outstanding savings. This month, we can provide you with access to Avios at particularly low prices and you can redeem them for flights. We will show you about 30 of the best sweet spots.
Our airline of the month of August is Air Serbia. The airline emerged from the former JAT af- ter Etihad Airways‘ entry in 2013 and now serves mainly European destinations and a long- haul route to New York from its Belgrade hub.
Lufthansa is now offering First Class rates from EUR 3,490 to Bangkok, Johannesburg or Sao Paulo. The attractive Premium Economy and Business Class offers from France to Alexander Koenig Southeast Asia will run only until 23 August. Swiss First Class offers relatively cheap flights to India, South Africa, and the Middle East. SAS Business Class rates from D/A/CH to Mia- mi can still be booked from EUR 1,733, as can Ethiopian Airlines flights to Cape Town from EUR 1,703. Asiana Airlines and Vietnam Airlines take you from EUR 2,769 in Business Class from Frankfurt to Sydney, while KLM takes you from all over Germany to Namibia for just EUR 1,550. British Airways offers Business Class tickets from Cologne to London for just EUR 186, while in Premium Economy Class you can travel from all over Germany to Las Ve- gas for just EUR 707.
Points at World of Hyatt can be purchased until 27 August with a 40 percent bonus once again, Fairmont offers up to 50 percent discount in North America and at Marriott Bonvoy you can easily generate a free night.
We will also be presenting three new hotels from all over the world. How many Avios do I have to redeem for a flight?
In contrast to other frequent flyer programs such as Miles & More, the mileage value of a flight is not determined according to a region table but is calculated per segment based on the distance. If you book a routing with several segments, an individual value is determined for each segment and then added. This means that you can combine different cabin classes on a ticket relatively easily. There are two different tables for British Airways and Iberia as well as for the oneworld partners, the latter being slightly more expensive.
Below you can see the table for British Airways and Iberia. There is a lower value for the low season and a higher value for the high season. You can see which value is valid on which date in the British Airways search on the homepage.

The most obvious option is to redeem British Airways Avios for flights on the airline itself. The prices differ between the peak and off-peak season. Unfortunately, there are relatively high surcharges on many routes.

One of the sweet spots for British Airways‘ redemption is the route between London and Kuwait, which is just under 3,000 mi- les in length. British Airways Reward Flight Saver within Europe
Another special sweet spot is short British Airways flights within Europe up to 649 miles distance. In low season, you only pay 4,000 Avios (peak season 4,500 Avios) plus EUR 25 in Economy Class and 7,750 Avios (peak season 9,000 Avios) plus EUR 32 in Business Class. The availability is generally excellent. The surcharges here are at a fixed value only for British Airways‘ own flights.

An example would be a reward flight from Frankfurt to London City, which you can get in the low season for only 4,000 Avios plus EUR 25 each way (8,000 Avios + EUR 50 roundtrip).

The next distance range is from 650 miles to 1,151 miles. For a reward flight you need 6,500 miles (Offpeak) / 7,500 Avios (Peak) in Economy Class and 12,750 Avios (Offpeak) / 15,000 Avios (Peak) in Business Class. For flights with oneworld part- ners, a slightly higher amount of 9,000 Avios in Economy and 16,500 Avios in Business Class will be charged.
London to Madrid in Business Class
The flights from London to Madrid are an attractive option for this range. The BA460 flight on this rotation is usually operated with a long-haul aircraft (Boeing 777), which has a real Business Class. Between 6 and 31 August, British Airways will also be using the new Airbus A350 with the new Business Class Suite on this rotation. You can book all this for 12,750 Avios plus EUR 31 per route in low season (26,250 Avios plus EUR 62 roundtrip).

From London to Helsinki in Finnair Business Class
Another attractive possibility to fly with a long-haul Business Class within Europe is the route from London to Helsinki. Finnair usually uses an Airbus A350 or an Airbus A330 on the AY1338/AY1339 rotation, both with a real Business Class. British Airways / Comair flights within Africa
With Comair, British Airways operates its own subsidiary in South Africa. These flights can also be booked with Avios, which is an excellent value on some otherwise very expensive routes.
From Mauritius, you fly to Johannesburg for about 17,000 Avios plus EUR 80. This flight usually costs more than EUR 600.
From the Victoria Falls, you fly to Johannesburg for 7,750 Avios plus EUR 80 in Business Class. The routes can be booked at the same price in both directions.
From London to Moscow in British Airways First Class
The only intra-European flight on which British Airways offers First Class is the route to Moscow. Availability is unfortunately extremely rare here, but on selected dates, you can purchase a one-way flight on the route for 40,000 Avios plus EUR 33. The round trip costs 80,000 Avios plus EUR 66, which is exactly double the price.

Iberia
As Iberia and British Airways are affiliates of the IAG Group, you can also freely transfer Avios between the British Airways Exe- cutive Club and the Iberia Plus Program. The only requirement is that both accounts have existed for at least 90 days. Iberia Plus points are excellent value on Atlantic routes in particular. On the one hand, the mileage values on Iberia flights are lower than on British Airways, and on the other hand, the fees are much lower.
Iberia Business Class Madrid - New York
For only 34,000 Avios plus EUR 106,03 taxes & fees you can purchase an off-peak reward flight from Madrid to New York (64,000 Avios plus EUR 187 roundtrip).

American Airlines
Avios can also be used by oneworld partner American Airlines. In contrast to redemption on the remaining oneworld Airlines, flights under 650 miles are priced at the higher distance range of 650 to 1,151 miles and are therefore more expensive. Never- theless, you can achieve excellent savings on more expensive routes.
American Airlines from the West Coast to Hawaii
From Los Angeles and Phoenix, you can book comparatively cheap reward flights with Avios to Hawaii. A single flight on these routes costs 38,750 Avios (77,500 roundtrip) in Business Class or 13,000 Avios (26,000 Avios roundtrip) in Economy Class. Surcharges are only five euros per direction.
From Miami to the Caribbean
From Miami, American Airlines serves many destinations in the Caribbean, which can often be very expensive if paid in full. With Avios, many destinations can be reached from as little as 7,500 Avios (15,000 Avios roundtrip) in Economy Class or 15,000 Avios (30,000 Avios roundtrip) in Business Class. The surcharge here is only five euros.

Qatar Airways
British Airways Avios can also be used very well for Qatar Airways flights, especially the routes to Doha cost several thousand euros as a paid ticket. In order to minimize the surcharges on the way to Doha, it is worthwhile to book a separate return flight. A return flight from Europe to Doha costs EUR 450 in taxes and fees, a one-way flight to Doha only EUR 250 and a return flight EUR 115. If you book both flights separately, you only pay a total of EUR 365 in surcharges.

The modern Air Serbia, as it can be seen today at many European airports, was established in 2013 with the entry of Etihad. But the history of the Serbian airline goes back much further. Air Serbia was founded as „Aeroput“ in 1927 in Belgrade, then part of the Yugoslav Kingdom. In the following years, the company expanded rapidly and routes through the whole of Europe were added. After the air traffic came to a standstill due to the Second World War, the company launched again in 1948 under the name JAT „Yugoslav Air Transport“ as the national airline of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Although Yugoslavia was communist, the leading force of the Non-Aligned Movement, it maintained excellent diplomatic connections to all parts of the world, including most Western countries. This not only served as a catalyst for routes around the world but also enabled JAT to purchase the most modern Western aircraft of the time, such as the Caravelle, the Douglas DC-9 or the Boeing 707.
In 1988, JAT was the tenth largest European airline with destinations in 39 countries, including New York, Los Angeles, Beijing, and Singapore. With the disintegration of Yugoslavia at the beginning of the 1990s, the downfall of JAT has also begun. The Yugoslavian wars led to extensive sanctions against Serbia, resulting in the forced suspension of most international flights in 1992. At the beginning of the 2000s, international flight operations were resumed at a significantly reduced rate, but the airline never returned to its previous size and made high losses.
After merger negotiations with Turkish Airlines failed, Etihad acquired 49% of the indebted airline in 2013, the remaining 51% remaining in the ownership of the Serbian state. Under Etihad‘s leadership, the airline was comprehensively restructured and the fleet modernized. As part of this restructuring, the new name Air Serbia was chosen. Since then, the airline has focused on flights from its Belgrade hub to a variety of European destinations, the only exception being the long-haul route to New York, which has been served by a single Airbus A330 since 2016. Air Serbia returned to the profitable zone in 2014.

Air Serbia does not have an independent frequent flyer program but is part of the Etihad Guest Program. You can earn Etihad Guest Miles on almost all Air Serbia flights and use them for flights with the airline. Once you have Etihad Guest Silver status, you can also enjoy the Etihad Premium Lounge in Belgrade on Economy Class tickets. As a Gold and Platinum customer, you can additionally access guest lounges as well as lounges at outstations. In addition to flights on Etihad and Air Serbia, you can also take advantage of status benefits on other Etihad partners such as Alitalia, Air Seychelles or Virgin Australia. Silver status is achie- ved after 25,000 miles, Gold status after 50,000 miles and Platinum sta- tus after 125,000 miles within a rolling annual period.

The travel experience
Business Class On the ground If you start your journey in Belgrade, you will have access to the Air Serbia Premium Lounge as a Business Class guest. This was inspired by the design of the Etihad Premium Lounge in Abu Dhabi. In addition to a fully equipped bar, the lounge offers a dining area and its own relaxation area. During the course of the day, various dishes are served at a buffet. At outstations, you have access to contract lounges and the flagship lounges of Etihad partner companies such as the Etihad Lounge in New York or the Casa Alitalia in Rome. Furthermore, there is a decidedly Fast Track in Belgrade for Air Serbia Business Class custo- mers.
In the air
On short-haul flights, the Air Serbia Business Class product consists of normal seats with a blocked middle seat, which is very common within Europe. In contrast to Economy Class, however, most flights offer hot meals and an extensive selection of free alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

On long-haul routes, Air Serbia uses an Airbus A330 leased from Jet Airways, which is still equipped with the original Business Class seats of the former owner. These are completely flat seats in a 1-1-1 fishbone configuration. While some passengers may find the seat comparatively narrow, it still offers very good privacy. Movies can be enjoyed on the built-in entertainment system. On long-haul flights, Air Serbia serves a multi-course menu consisting of Serbian specialties and international clas- sics.
Economy Class On the ground
Air Serbia passengers traveling in Economy Class can purchase access to the Air Serbia Premium Lounge for a small surcharge. Prices start at just EUR 13 for a one-hour stay, depending on the time of day.
In the air
Air Serbia only includes water on the short- and medium-haul routes. Soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and snacks can be pur- chased on board for a fee. On long-haul flights to New York, two meals and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are availa- ble free of charge.
