  • 2015 Gulf South Conference Softball Championship Tournament
2015 Gulf South Conference Softball Championship Tournament April 30-May 2 Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park, Valdosta, Ga. www.gscsports.org | @GulfSouth | #GSCSB HISTORY OF THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE Academic excellence and a leadership role in the NCAA’s Division II make the Gulf South Conference (GSC) something special. The GSC is a charter member of Division II and enters its 45th year as one of the premier conferences at any NCAA level. In the summer of 1970, six college presidents met to discuss athletics; when the meeting ended, a new league emerged—the Mid-South Conference—started by, and to this day run by, the CEOs, the first in NCAA history. It is that CEO-control and involvement that makes the league work and its 14 championships (football; men’s & women’s cross country, men’s & women’s soccer; volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, men’s & women’s tennis, men’s & women’s golf, softball and baseball) so intensely contested. From that point forward, the GSC has been giant steps ahead of the D-II pack. Beginning in 1997, the league found neutral sites paying size- able guarantees for most of its team championships. NCAA Conventions regularly feature GSC-proposed or -inspired legislation. No one wins more regionals or earns more NCAA post-season bids. In 2004, the league purchased its own built-to-its-specification office space. But the crowning moment came in 2005-06, when the GSC debuted its highly successful “GSC-TV Live” package which included nine football games (now 11) and its men’s & women’s basketball tournament finals.

Stephen Green EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS James Jackson Basketball Coordinator Dr. Tekshia Ward -Smith ATHLETIC SPECIALIST Chris Chilton ATHLETIC SPECIALIST Mark Brock 2 DEKALB COUNTY’S LONG HISTORY OF STATE CHAMPIONS DeKalb County’s proud basketball history began and continues with a championship pedigree. The Clarkston boys brought home the first state trophy in 1940, and 41 other teams have since realized the big prize in the ensuing 76 years. From legendary coach Elmer Morrow ’s dominating boys teams at Druid Hills in the 1950s to the current boys powerhouses at Miller Grove and Columbia, the list of win- ners is an impressive one. Druid Hills knocked off Avondale (50 -44), Tifton (47 -44) and Jeff Davis (55 -42) in state finals in 1953, 1954 and 1957 respectively. Stone Mountain and Clarkston on the boys side, and Druid Hills and Stone Mountain among the girls served as the other early local powers. E.L. Rainey , another of DeKalb County’s original hoop coaching giants, led Stone Mountain to the Class B crown in 1957. Tom Church guided Clarkston to its second boys state championship with a victo- rious effort in the class B final in 1964. The girls matched the boys for the first time at Druid Hill in 1960, with Virginia Canady coaching that squad to the Class AAA title.

OCTOBER 2018 NORTHERN SUBURBS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION NORTHERN SUBURBS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION ISSUE 4, 2018 WWW.NSBA.COM.AU NEWS [email protected] 3X3 BASKETBALL'S POPULARITY RISING FAST The connuing boom in 3x3 Basketball since it became an Olympic sport for Tokyo in 2020 has led to record numbers playing across the country. That trend is evident at Norths as more players and teams are taking part in 3x3 Basketball right across the state. With a number of our u13 Boys breaking into the top 1000 players in Australia - seng their sights on our high-performance manager, Tom Garlepp (currently ranked #3) and Coach, Mike Golding (ranked #21 in Australia). With regular training sessions happening in and around Norths. “Every year it has just grown bigger and bigger with parcipaon numbers. It is really introducing 3x3, which is now an Olympic sport in 2020, to a generaon of younger athletes," Mike Golding said. "It has been great to see more and more kids here keen to train and learn the 3x3 game. It is also a great teaching tool for the 5x5 game because all the athletes on court get to pracce their skills and learn to play as a team because you are not allowed a game coach. So it is about collecve player ownership.” said Tom Garlepp. There are plenty of compeons to get involved in with more planned in 2018.
