With a number of our u13 Boys breaking into the top 1000 players in Australia - seng their sights on our high-performance manager, Tom Garlepp (currently ranked #3) and Coach, Mike Golding (ranked #21 in Australia). With regular training sessions happening in and around Norths. “Every year it has just grown bigger and bigger with parcipaon numbers. It is really introducing 3x3, which is now an Olympic sport in 2020, to a generaon of younger athletes," Mike Golding said. "It has been great to see more and more kids here keen to train and learn the 3x3 game. It is also a great teaching tool for the 5x5 game because all the athletes on court get to pracce their skills and learn to play as a team because you are not allowed a game coach. So it is about collecve player ownership.” said Tom Garlepp. There are plenty of compeons to get involved in with more planned in 2018. As far as it takes me! Right now I am so grateful for the opportunity to play in the WNBL and am excited for the many years ahead of me in this league. [2] What’s your favourite team to watch playing? In the NBA definitely the spurs I love watching their ball movement and that ‘extra pass’. I also love watching the Opals, as Cheryl is now my coach for the flames and assisted in coaching the opals it’s awesome to watch them run some of the same plays and gain a few tips from that. [3] Who are your favourite players and why? Matthew dellavedova “Delly” is great to watch as I love the way he hassles on defence and gets after every loose ball. I also remember watching Belinda Snell from a young age and am grateful to have her coach me last season in SEABL and now be my teammate in the Flames. [4] What are you learning in basketball that you’re using in other areas of your life? Hard work and determination always pays off! My busy schedule with basketball has also allowed myself to develop great time management skills. As a full time Uni student and professional athlete I am proud of the way I am able to balance the two. [5] What areas of basketball could you stand to get better at? Over the past few years I have definitely worked on my shooting, particularly from 3-point range. I also need to work on getting physically stronger, as I am competing against much stronger and bigger bodies in SEABL and the WNBL. [6] What other sports do you like? Cedric Jackson’s return to the NBL — joining Rob Beveridge’s Illawarra Hawks — is as much a coup for the team’s head coach and fanbase, as it is for the budding Naar, who’s one of the country’s most promising young point guards. Naar, 24, has been fortunate to pick the brain of Jackson, as the Sydney-native enters the first season of his professional career. “He’s a former MVP, led the league in assists. He just knows how to play,” Naar told foxsports.com.au. “In terms of getting used to the pace of the game, he’s obviously a really quick guard, but he knows how to change pace, play slow when he needs to, and keep calm. “Nothing really speeds him up or bothers him. I might be a bit frantic when I get out there, trying to play 100 percent, but just to calm down, let the game come to me; I’ve learned lots.” We saw that level of poise and control during Naar’s time at Saint Mary’s, where he ended up as the school’s all-time assist leader; a title formerly held by Matthew Dellavedova. Will Emmett Naar be the During his four years in Moraga, Naar was dishing to a big-man like NBL’s Rookie of the Year? Jock Landale. Now in Illawarra, his target is yet another one-time NBL MVP in Brian Conklin, as well as AJ Ogilvy, widely regarded as one of the most talented big-men in the league. While the 6’1 point guard will be coming off the bench, Beveridge has given him a level of freedom that rookies don’t usually get. “I think using a lot of on-balls as the majority of our offence,” Naar said, when asked about the similarities between the college game and his time with the Hawks, thus far. “(They key) is just me crashing the paint, and moving the ball.” Naar will be the Hawks’ primary ball carrier off the bench, and he’ll have an interesting cast of teammates to feed, from Todd Blanchfield looking to emerge as a star, to a content David Andersen, and Ogilvy, one of the best centres in the country. That group will show us the latest instalment of ‘Bevo Ball’, with Naar set to be given a much- desired sense of freedom on the offensive end. “We play a pretty high-paced offence. I think Bevo wants me to play a bit free,” Naar said.
