Norths News October 2018 OCTOBER 2018 NORTHERN SUBURBS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION NORTHERN SUBURBS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION ISSUE 4, 2018 WWW.NSBA.COM.AU NEWS [email protected] 3X3 BASKETBALL'S POPULARITY RISING FAST The connuing boom in 3x3 Basketball since it became an Olympic sport for Tokyo in 2020 has led to record numbers playing across the country. That trend is evident at Norths as more players and teams are taking part in 3x3 Basketball right across the state. With a number of our u13 Boys breaking into the top 1000 players in Australia - seng their sights on our high-performance manager, Tom Garlepp (currently ranked #3) and Coach, Mike Golding (ranked #21 in Australia). With regular training sessions happening in and around Norths. “Every year it has just grown bigger and bigger with parcipaon numbers. It is really introducing 3x3, which is now an Olympic sport in 2020, to a generaon of younger athletes," Mike Golding said. "It has been great to see more and more kids here keen to train and learn the 3x3 game. It is also a great teaching tool for the 5x5 game because all the athletes on court get to pracce their skills and learn to play as a team because you are not allowed a game coach. So it is about collecve player ownership.” said Tom Garlepp. There are plenty of compeons to get involved in with more planned in 2018. As far as it takes me! Right now I am so grateful for the opportunity to play in the WNBL and am excited for the many years ahead of me in this league. [2] What’s your favourite team to watch playing? In the NBA definitely the spurs I love watching their ball movement and that ‘extra pass’. I also love watching the Opals, as Cheryl is now my coach for the flames and assisted in coaching the opals it’s awesome to watch them run some of the same plays and gain a few tips from that. [3] Who are your favourite players and why? Matthew dellavedova “Delly” is great to watch as I love the way he hassles on defence and gets after every loose ball. I also remember watching Belinda Snell from a young age and am grateful to have her coach me last season in SEABL and now be my teammate in the Flames. [4] What are you learning in basketball that you’re using in other areas of your life? Hard work and determination always pays off! My busy schedule with basketball has also allowed myself to develop great time management skills. As a full time Uni student and professional athlete I am proud of the way I am able to balance the two. [5] What areas of basketball could you stand to get better at? Over the past few years I have definitely worked on my shooting, particularly from 3-point range. I also need to work on getting physically stronger, as I am competing against much stronger and bigger bodies in SEABL and the WNBL. [6] What other sports do you like? Growing up I basically played every sport that I could including Touch Football, Netball, Cross Country, Dancing and Athletics. I always loved team sports! [7] What would your superpower be? Lightening speed! [8] What music do you listen to for motivation? Jess Glynne NORTHS BASKETBALL - STRONGER TOGETHER WWW.NSBA.COM.AU !3 OCTOBER 2018 NORTHERN SUBURBS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION [9] What app can’t you live without? NORTHS BASKETBALL - STRONGER TOGETHER WWW.NSBA.COM.AU !4 OCTOBER 2018 NORTHERN SUBURBS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION ILLAWARRA HAWKS ROOKIE [AND NORTHS JUNIOR] EMMETT NAAR EXPECTING LEARNING EXPERIENCE AND FREEDOM IN FIRST PRO SEASON VIA FOX SPORTS Emmett Naar, former Norths junior, may be the favourite to win the NBL’s Rookie of the Year award, and he has the advantage of having his first season under the tutelage of an MVP. Cedric Jackson’s return to the NBL — joining Rob Beveridge’s Illawarra Hawks — is as much a coup for the team’s head coach and fanbase, as it is for the budding Naar, who’s one of the country’s most promising young point guards. Naar, 24, has been fortunate to pick the brain of Jackson, as the Sydney-native enters the first season of his professional career. “He’s a former MVP, led the league in assists. He just knows how to play,” Naar told foxsports.com.au. “In terms of getting used to the pace of the game, he’s obviously a really quick guard, but he knows how to change pace, play slow when he needs to, and keep calm. “Nothing really speeds him up or bothers him. I might be a bit frantic when I get out there, trying to play 100 percent, but just to calm down, let the game come to me; I’ve learned lots.” We saw that level of poise and control during Naar’s time at Saint Mary’s, where he ended up as the school’s all-time assist leader; a title formerly held by Matthew Dellavedova. Will Emmett Naar be the During his four years in Moraga, Naar was dishing to a big-man like NBL’s Rookie of the Year? Jock Landale. Now in Illawarra, his target is yet another one-time NBL MVP in Brian Conklin, as well as AJ Ogilvy, widely regarded as one of the most talented big-men in the league. While the 6’1 point guard will be coming off the bench, Beveridge has given him a level of freedom that rookies don’t usually get. “I think using a lot of on-balls as the majority of our offence,” Naar said, when asked about the similarities between the college game and his time with the Hawks, thus far. “(They key) is just me crashing the paint, and moving the ball.” Naar will be the Hawks’ primary ball carrier off the bench, and he’ll have an interesting cast of teammates to feed, from Todd Blanchfield looking to emerge as a star, to a content David Andersen, and Ogilvy, one of the best centres in the country. That group will show us the latest instalment of ‘Bevo Ball’, with Naar set to be given a much- desired sense of freedom on the offensive end. “We play a pretty high-paced offence. I think Bevo wants me to play a bit free,” Naar said. NORTHS BASKETBALL - STRONGER TOGETHER WWW.NSBA.COM.AU !5 OCTOBER 2018 NORTHERN SUBURBS BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION 2019 REP TRIALS ARE UNDERWAY! 2019 Representative Basketball Season trials are now well underway at Norths, with great numbers trying out to make a team this coming season. With the kick-off of trials we are excited to make 2 BIG coaching announcements. Renae Garlepp will begin her first Head Coaching position at NSBA after several years representing the club at a high level in a playing capacity. The former Opal and 2x WNBL champion was also a member of our Waratah championship winning side for 2018 and was named in the league’s All-Star 5 team. On top of her elite playing career, Renae is no stranger to coaching. Renae has occupied the position of Coaching Director at the high school SCECGS Redlands in Neutral Bay for the last 4 years, and has been a part of both the country and metropolitan BNSW junior programs over several year as well. Most recently, Renae held the position of assistant coach for the under 18 NSW metropolitan team earlier this year. “I’m very excited for the opportunity to coach Youth League Women in 2019. I’m keen to build on the success of the 2018 campaign and help our juniors transition into competitive senior basketball — Renae Garlepp Matt Johnston will take the helm with Youth League men. Matt’s experience began as a younger coach at the Gosford City Rebels where he coached numerous representative sides to State Championships, as well as Under 14 Australian Club National Championships, and was a part of the NSW Country State program. Matt was appointed as a Development Coach for the Townsville McDonald’s Crocodiles in 2011, and held this role until 2014.

The Clarkston boys brought home the first state trophy in 1940, and 41 other teams have since realized the big prize in the ensuing 76 years. From legendary coach Elmer Morrow ’s dominating boys teams at Druid Hills in the 1950s to the current boys powerhouses at Miller Grove and Columbia, the list of win- ners is an impressive one. Druid Hills knocked off Avondale (50 -44), Tifton (47 -44) and Jeff Davis (55 -42) in state finals in 1953, 1954 and 1957 respectively. Stone Mountain and Clarkston on the boys side, and Druid Hills and Stone Mountain among the girls served as the other early local powers. E.L. Rainey , another of DeKalb County’s original hoop coaching giants, led Stone Mountain to the Class B crown in 1957. Tom Church guided Clarkston to its second boys state championship with a victo- rious effort in the class B final in 1964. The girls matched the boys for the first time at Druid Hill in 1960, with Virginia Canady coaching that squad to the Class AAA title.
