For further information or to subscribe to the Christian Research Journal go to: http://www.equip.org SYNOPSIS What's wrong with the "Faith" movement? Its leaders include many of the most popular television evangelists. Its adherents compose a large percentage of charismatic evangelical Christians. Its emphases on faith, the authority of the believer, and the absolute veracity of Scripture could appear to be just what today's church needs. And yet, I am convinced that this movement poses one of the greatest contemporary threats to orthodox Christianity from within. Through it, cultic theology is being increasingly accepted as true Christianity. This article will highlight several serious problems with the Faith movement by providing an overview of its major sources and leaders. Part Two will focus on the movement's doctrinal deviations as represented by one of its leading proponents.1 ITS DEBT TO NEW THOUGHT It is important to note at the outset that the bulk of Faith theology can be traced directly to the cultic teachings of New Thought metaphysics. Thus, much of the theology of the Faith movement can also be found in such clearly pseudo-Christian cults as Religious Science, Christian Science, and the Unity School of Christianity. Over a

    Faith Healing in Christianity and Islam: A Comparative Analysis A dissertation submitted to the Islamic College in collaboration with Middlesex University in accordance with the requirements of the degree of MA in Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Health and Education September 2015 Word Count: 13,550 I. Abstract This study explores the development and modalities of faith healing as manifested in Christianity and Islam. The purpose is not to inflame or take sides in the debates surrounding the phenomenon, but rather to enable each faith to learn from the experiences of the other. A further goal is to provide medical practitioners and others with a better understanding of faith healing, thereby enabling them to productively address the phenomenon within Christian and Muslim contexts. Faith healing in Christianity is not the same as faith healing among Muslims. Despite their differences, however, the two varieties share certain core principles. Identifying these is a chief aim of this paper, and the contexts within which faith healers of both religions practice also will be examined. Grounded Theory is used to analyze prior academic work on faith healing with the aim of comparing how the phenomenon is manifested in Christianity and Islam, as well as in drawing conclusions about and implications of the phenomenon with respect to conventional medical practitioners. Credible research assessing faith healing across social or religious boundaries is rare. Moreover, the academic landscape is not immune to bias and the lenses through which one might assess a work’s objectivity can be opaque. Compounding the problem, some of what exists at the popular level has been written either by enthusiasts or skeptics, casting doubt on its objectivity and limiting its utility.

    º Creation of Order of Chivalry Page 0 of 72 º PREFACE Knights come in many historical forms besides the traditional Knight in shining armor such as the legend of King Arthur invokes. There are the Samurai, the Mongol, the Moors, the Normans, the Templars, the Hospitaliers, the Saracens, the Teutonic, the Lakota, the Centurions just to name a very few. Likewise today the Modern Knight comes from a great variety of Cultures, Professions and Faiths. A knight was a "gentleman soldier or member of the warrior class of the Middle Ages in Europe. In other Indo-European languages, cognates of cavalier or rider French chevalier and German Ritter) suggesting a connection to the knight's mode of transport. Since antiquity a position of honor and prestige has been held by mounted warriors such as the Greek hippeus and the Roman eques, and knighthood in the Middle Ages was inextricably linked with horsemanship. Some orders of knighthood, such as the Knights Templar, have themselves become the stuff of legend; others have disappeared into obscurity. Today, a number of orders of knighthood continue to exist in several countries, such as the English Order of the Garter, the Swedish Royal Order of the Seraphim, and the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. Each of these orders has its own criteria for eligibility, but knighthood is generally granted by a head of state to selected persons to recognize some meritorious achievement. In the Legion of Honor, democracy became a part of the new chivalry. No longer was this limited to men of noble birth, as in the past, who received favors from their king.

Thayne Department of History Master of Arts Marie Ogden‘s Home of Truth colony—a religious community that was located in southern Utah during the 1930s and 40s—was part of a segment of the American religious landscape that has largely been overlooked. As such, her movement points to a significant gap in the historiography of American religion. In addition to documenting the history of this obscure community, I situate Marie Ogden as part of what I call the early new age of American religion, an underdeveloped part of the broader categories of metaphysical religion or Western esotericism.
