Visualizing Levinas:Existence and Existents Through Mulholland Drive
VISUALIZING LEVINAS: EXISTENCE AND EXISTENTS THROUGH MULHOLLAND DRIVE, MEMENTO, AND VANILLA SKY Holly Lynn Baumgartner A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2005 Committee: Ellen Berry, Advisor Kris Blair Don Callen Edward Danziger Graduate Faculty Representative Erin Labbie ii © 2005 Holly Lynn Baumgartner All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor This dissertation engages in an intentional analysis of philosopher Emmanuel Levinas’s book Existence and Existents through the reading of three films: Memento (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001), and Mulholland Drive, (2001). The “modes” and other events of being that Levinas associates with the process of consciousness in Existence and Existents, such as fatigue, light, hypostasis, position, sleep, and time, are examined here. Additionally, the most contested spaces in the films, described as a “Waking Dream,” is set into play with Levinas’s work/ The magnification of certain points of entry into Levinas’s philosophy opened up new pathways for thinking about method itself. Philosophically, this dissertation considers the question of how we become subjects, existents who have taken up Existence, and how that process might be revealed in film/ Additionally, the importance of Existence and Existents both on its own merit and to Levinas’s body of work as a whole, especially to his ethical project is underscored. A second set of entry points are explored in the conclusion of this dissertation, in particular how film functions in relation to philosophy, specifically that of Levinas. What kind of critical stance toward film would be an ethical one? Does the very materiality of film, its fracturing of narrative, time, and space, provide an embodied formulation of some of the basic tenets of Levinas’s thinking? Does it create its own philosophy through its format? And finally, analyzing the results of the project yielded far more complicated and unsettling questions than they answered. -
Yul Kwon, from Bullying Target to Reality TV Star by NPR Staff from Npr.Org 2012
Name: Class: Yul Kwon, From Bullying Target to Reality TV Star By NPR Staff From Npr.Org 2012 Yul Kwon’s early life was mired with a host of challenges. Born to South Korean immigrants in New York, Kwon never had a positive role model from his community. In 2006, he decided to join the cast of Survivor and make a name for himself in popular culture. As you read, take notes on how Yul Kwon overcame his personal demons to become a role model for other Asian Americans. [1] Yul Kwon first earned his game-changer status when the Yale University-trained lawyer put his career on hold to compete on the CBS show Survivor in 2006. He became the first Asian- American to win that show's $1 million prize. That led to work as a special correspondent for CNN, a lecturer at the FBI Academy, and deputy chief of the Federal Communication Commission's Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau. Kwon currently hosts the news program LinkAsia on LinkTV, and recently finished hosting PBS' America Revealed, a mini documentary series "Yul J. Kwon" is licensed under CC BY 2.0. about agriculture, transportation, energy and manufacturing. Being A Target Of Bullying Kwon's early life involved a host of challenges. He was born in 1975 in New York to South Korean immigrants. He tells Tell Me More host Michel Martin he had a severe lisp as a kid, so many people assumed he was a foreigner who could not speak English properly. Kwon says he grew increasingly quiet to avoid being teased or beaten up. -
Issue 431 Decent Exposure: Too Much TV? If It Seems Like Every Time You Turn on the TV There’S Another Awards Show, You’Re Right
January 20, 2015, Issue 431 Decent Exposure: Too Much TV? If it seems like every time you turn on the TV there’s another awards show, you’re right. A quick, unofficial count reveals nearly 20 opportunities a year for artists to get valuable screen time on either country or all-genre shows. Add to that the myriad of daytime and late night talk shows and the number jumps to nearly 40. When is enough enough ... or even too much? Country Aircheck asked Sony/Nashville Chairman/CEO Gary Overton, Warner Music Nashville’s SVP/Publicity Wes Vause, Spalding Entertainment’s Clarence Spalding (Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts) and The Green Room Owner/Publicist Mary Hilliard Harrington (Aldean, Lady Antebellum) to find out how they create “must see TV” while protecting their artists from overexposure. “Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Kenny Chesney and Brad Paisley get asked to All Saints: Mercury’s Canaan Smith (c) celebrates a day do everything under the sun,” says Overton. well spent at the Country Cares for St. Jude seminar with “I speak with their managers at least once a (l-r) The Country Club with Dee Jay Silver’s Keith Kaufman, Gary Overton week. Failed Active Listening in The Real World: A Study of Dominance in Casual Conversation Tamara Jones Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) School of Education, University of Sheffield September, 2010 ii Abstract Native-English speakers generally appreciate a certain amount of supportive feedback from their listeners. However, occasionally, a positive listener response actually causes the speaker to become threatened and revert to floor-saving measures. Speakers whose first language is not English may be at a disadvantage when involved in interactions with native-English speakers because they may not be equipped with the tools to exercise conversational power, if they wish to do so. Consequently, with the goal of creating educational materials that can be easily used in English Language Teaching (ELT), this thesis examines instances of listener support which are not appreciated by the speaker. For my corpus, I pulled 69 conversations from a popular American reality TV show, The Real World. These conversations were selected because of the presence of floor-saving strategies in the wake of seemingly benign listener commentary.
