    FILM GENRE AND ITS VICISSITUDES: THE CASE OF THE PSYCHOTHRILLER 1 Virginia Luzón Aguado Universidad de Zaragoza This paper is the result of an exploration into the contemporary psychothriller and its matrix genre, the thriller. It was inspired by the lack of critical attention devoted to this type of film, so popular with the audience yet apparently a thorn in the critics' side. The main aim of this paper is therefore to contribute a small piece of criticism to fill this noticeable gap in film genre theory. It begins with a brief overview of contemporary film genre theory, which provides the background for a vindication of the thriller as a genre and specifically of the psychothriller as a borderline sub-generic category borrowing features from both the thriller and the horror film. When I first started work on this paper I realised how difficult it was to find theoretical material on the thriller. Certain genre critics actually avoided the term thriller altogether and others mentioned it but often seemed to be either unsure about it or simultaneously, and rather imprecisely, referred to different types of films, such as detective films, police procedural films, political thrillers, courtroom thrillers, erotic thrillers and psychothrillers, to name but a few. But the truth of the matter is that "the thriller" as such has rarely been analysed in books or articles devoted to the study of genre and when it has, one can rarely find anything but a few short paragraphs dealing with it. Yet, critical work devoted to other acknowledged and well-documented genres such as melodrama, comedy, film noir, horror, the western, the musical or the war film is easily accessible.

    MICHAEL DOUGLAS Biography August 30, 2018 An actor with over forty years of experience in theatre, film and television, Michael Douglas branched out into independent feature production in 1975 with the Academy Award-winning One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). Since then, as a producer and as an actor-producer, he has shown an uncanny knack for choosing projects that reflect changing trends and public concerns. Over the years, he has been involved in such controversial and politically influential motion pictures as One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The China Syndrome (1979) and Traffic (2000), as well as such popular films as Romancing the Stone (1984) and Fatal Attraction (1987). The son of Kirk and Diana Douglas, Michael was bom in New Jersey. He attended the elite preparatory Choate School and spent his summers with his father on movie sets. Although accepted at Yale, Douglas attended the University of California, Santa Barbara. After receiving his B.A. degree in 1968, Douglas moved to New York City to continue his dramatic training, studying at the American Place Theatre with Wynn Handman and at the Neighborhood Playhouse, where he appeared in workshop productions of Luigi Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author and Thornton Wilder's Happy Journey.     Subcinema MAPPING INFORMAL FILM DISTRIBUTION Ramon Lobato Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2009 School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne Abstract This thesis investigates the politics of film distribution from a transnational perspective. Distribution, the most profitable sector of the film industry, is a rich site for cultural analysis. Distribution networks do more than deliver content to audiences; they shape film culture in their own image by regulating our access to cinema, creating demand for future production, and structuring our habits and tastes. The existing literature on film distribution focuses almost exclusively on multiplex, arthouse, and home video circuits. This thesis aims to broaden the scope of distribution research by taking into account informal, nontheatrical networks in grey and black economies. Providing evidence of the empirical significance of these “invisible” global markets, I offer a new model of media circulation (subcinema) which I develop through three case studies of film industries in Africa, the Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. The broad argument is that analysing film from the vantage point of distribution can open up a space for a different kind of transnational film studies, one founded on a materialist model of how audiences access cinema. The first chapter of the thesis critically reviews existing scholarship on film distribution and draws on political economy, anthropology, film history, and media economics to develop a theory of distribution as a cultural technology. The second chapter examines the evolution of the Hollywood distribution model and the strategies used by the major studios to sell their product to domestic and international audiences, highlighting the bottlenecks that are characteristic of the conventional “windowing” system.
