Page 4 Nor’ By Nor’ East August 2010 Biddle&Smart Co.-1882-1930 -Amesbury, Massachusetts Continuedfromthe July issue 1923was theturning point forB&S,whenthe firm nearly tripled productionbydevotingits entire factory spacetobuild sedansfor Hudson. Thebig sedanssoldwell foracoupleofyears, but fashion soon shifted to the close-coupled Brougham. Productionjumpedtoover12.000 bodies in 1923. Theplantexpansioncontinued, B &S,takingover, in the same year,the CurrierCameron &Co. andtheir large"ColchesterMill" on Elm Street. In 1925 buildings fromHollander&MorrillBody Co., Witham Body Co., andT.W. Lane Company were added. Theaddedcapacitypermitted acceptance of asmall orderfromthe Rolls-RoyceSpringfield plant. In September1926, theBryantBody Co.was taken overtoobtain abuildingonCedar Street. This brought the total spacetonearly ahalf millionsquare feet in 21 buildings in six different sections of town. The properties of anumberofsmaller body-builders such as theAutoBody &FinishingCo., Withamand Hollander&MorrillwereabsorbedbyBiddle&Smart when they went outofbusiness in theearly to mid- twenties as they sought to expand their productionofbodies forHudson. Biddle&Smart supplied Hudson with aluminumbodies only. They hadnopressestoformsteel, nor did anyother company in Amesbury. In 1925,Biddle&Smart alsobegan making bodies forRolls-Royce'snew American company at Springfield,Massachusetts. In April 1925, thecompany shipped itsfirstRolls-Royce bodies,and by March,1926 its Amesbury holdings hadgrown fromnineshops to 41 scattered around town, turningout 400 bodies aday.Biddle&Smart'spiecemeal facilitiesamounted to acottageindustry.Bodies were dollied from place to place andput through individualdepartments forframing,metalworking, paintingand trimming.Italiancoachbuilders evolvedasimilar systemafterWorld War II. In Mayof1925, Hudson introduced theBiddle&Smart-builtBrougham, aclosed-coupled four-door sedan with blindrear quarters covered, as wasthe entire roof in black leather. The Broughams lentabit of cachet to theHudson line, andwas an immediate success. Thestyle wascontinuedinto1926, andin1927 wasdressedup with aset of landauirons,though theleather covering of theroof wasdeleted. Biddle&Smart productionpeaked in March,1926. 400 bodies aday were produced in threeeight-hour shiftsby4,736employees.The increased productionrequiredthe adaptationofthe newest powerwoodworking toolsand theuse of Ducopaint. Finished bodies were sent by rail from AmesburytoHudson in Detroit. The company operated in 21 buildings with nearly half amillionsquare feet of workspace, in six different sections of Amesbury. “Badweather andslowness in opening of theseason” slowed productionconsiderably laterinthe year. Howeverarecord 40,892 bodies were shipped that year,which wasnearly athousandmorethanin1925. The factthatHudson MotorCar Company built it’s own 10 milliondollar body plantinDetroitwas not agood sign forBiddle&Smart. By the endof1926 all steel Hudson sedanbodies were coming from thenew factory and by 1928 Biddle&Smart productionhad droppedby60%. From 1927 to 1929, at least19differentproductionbodies were made for Hudson,some of them designed by Walter Murphy with therestemanatingfromHudson. Hudson begantoadvertise all Biddleand Smart bodies as “custom-built," even though they were actuallyregular productionbodies,albeit cladinaluminum. Early in 1927 Walter M. Murphy Co.ofPasadena, California was commissionedtobuild aseries of prototype carsfor Hudson usingMurphy’snew thin-pillararchitecture. Sixthin-pillared prototype Hudsons were delivered to Hudson andsoon approvedbythe board of directors forthe 1928 modellineup. As Murphy lacked theproductioncapabilitythatHudson needed,Biddle&Smart wasthe natural choice to producethe production bodies so the prototypesweresentoff to Amesbury.Unfortunately Murphy’sstylish rooflines were judgedto be toolow by Hudson’schief of engineering, StephenFekete, andhequickly dispatched an assistanttogoto Biddle&Smart and"raisethe roof three inches" on the1928 Murphy-designed bodies.Styles includeda

Victoria andLandauSedan on theModelRchassis, joining acoupe,coach,standard sedan, convertible coupe,town sedan, andaBriggs-built five-passengerphaeton. On theModelLchassis wasbuilt aseven- passengersedan andanewseven-passengerlimo, clubsedan anddualcowl SportPhaetonplusaBriggs-built seven-passengersedan.The convertibleand thecoupe were stillborn,but theothers reachedproductionon Hudson's127-3/8inchwheelbaseModel0chassis, the longeroftwo introduced that year. As markets bullied in thewaningdaysof1928, so didHudson, going to greater lengths than ever before. The ModelL,introduced in January 1929, boasteda139-inch wheelbase, although, curiously, twoofthe B&S built "DesignbyMurphy" styles, the Victoria andthe LandauSedan,wereconsignedtothe shorter, 122-1/2 inch ModelRchassis. Theseven-passengersedan andanewseven-passengerlimoand aclubsedan in the Murphy style were offeredinthe ModelLline, along with aseven-passengerversion of thephaetonand a gorgeous,dual-cowl Sport Phaeton. The1929 Hudson ModelRusedBiddle&Smart bodies fortwo stylesand otherstyles were general production. It is probablyunfortunate that theLandauSedan andVictoria were putonthe shorter ModelR chassis as they arenot recognized as Classicsbythe CCCA. Hudson made twoofthe five L-seriesCCCA designated “Classic” cars(the7-passengersedan and7-PassengerPhaeton) while Biddle&Smart made the Victoria,the LandauSedan andthe highlytreasured dualcowl SportPhaetons.Inadditiontothe twoBiddle& Smart-builtR-seriesmodels, Briggs produced threeand Hudson built theremainingfivebody styles. B&S startedproducingits own trunks forsome models. For exampleinJanuary 1929 shipments show only 1,400 short-wheelbaseLandauSedansand Victoria bodies,along with 1,300 trunks.Productionwouldhave picked up duringthe spring,but thefact that they were making trunks instead of bodies wasanominous sign. Exact productionfigures forBiddle&Smart long-wheelbase1929 bodies have so farbeen elusive, but estimates range up to about 800 ModelLbodies,with possibly 300 of them thedualcowl SportPhaetons. 1929 ModelRHudsons cameascoupes, sedans,convertibles,and aBriggs-built five-passengerphaetonin additiontothe entry-level coach. TheMurphy-designed Victoria andLandauSedan were addedtothe short- wheelbaselineaswell.The otherMurphy begatcars, the seven-passengersedan,seven-passengerlimo, and ClubSedan were turned out by Biddle&Smart forthe 139-inch chassis,aswerethe featuredSportPhaetonand aseven-passengerphaetonofmuchmorepedestrian design andlackingthe dualcowl feature. Today'sowners have quotedsome suspiciously exclusive quantities of productionfor their particular car models.SportPhaetons,for example, areregularly quoted as beingone of twelveoreighteen;the truth is likely muchlesstantalizing. Hudson historianD.J. Kava puts Sport Phaetonproduction, after studying all available Biddle&Smart documentation, at "possibly 300," there beingsome 800 B&Sbodies forlong-wheelbasecarsin toto.ModelLroster figures seem to supportthishypothesis, forSportPhaetons areactuallythe mostprevalent survivingbody style,with nine known to presentlyexist in one form or another, out of 23 extantModelL’s. Alittle known fact is that Biddle&Smart built thecabsfor Hudson'sshort-lived (1929-1930) Essex-based line of commercial vehicles.Includedwerethe Dovercab &chassis, canopy express, paneltruck and expressexpress(pick-up).According to Hudson recordstheyalso supplied thevan bodies as well as thebeds andraised structures used on thepickup andcanopy expressmodels. While theHercules Body Co.of Evansville,Indianaproduced aDover-brandedcommercial body brochure, they didnot supplyDoverwith productionbodies.Anexaminationofthe twobrochures show twoentirely different lines of canopy express andscreen side coachwork. One very rare bird is an un-restored 1929 Hudson canopy expressinthe collection of PhilWilliams of Remsen, NewYork. Thecab on hisvehicleissimilar, if not identical, to that found on theDovercanopy expressand includesacab-mounted Biddle&Smart body tag.Hewrites: "I've attached acoupleofpictures of my Hudson. They show that this is slightly different than theDover. First, it is aHudson not an Essex.Mostobvious is thestraight roof,not ahumpback like theDoverpictures.The Hudson bumper(not pictured) anddualside-mountsalso differfromthe Dover. IE: this is not identicalto Dover,but unique as aHudson. It alsohas therosepatterndashinadditiontothe body tag." Theexact details of thecorporate demise arestill buried in thecourtrecords. whenHudson built it’s own closed-body plantand by December1929, whenHudson declinedtorenew its usualannualcontract, theend wasapparent.Additionally transportationcharges to andfromAmesbury made Biddle&Smart too expensivefor Hudson to useasthe pricesonall newautomobiles were fallingappreciably. Withthe Depression worsening, Hudson turned more body business over to nearer suppliers,suchasBriggsand Murray, andBiddle&Smart found itself not onlywithout amajorDetroitcustomer, butwith no customersat all. After completing thecontract with Hudson for 1930 modelbodies in thesummer of that year,the Amesbury concernwas advisedthat, beginning in 1931, it would no longerbethe outside source forHudson bodies.The custom-body firm tried forabrief period to market aluminumboats, but within monthsthe company wasout of business.
