    BROADWAY BOUND: Mezer’s Modest Proposals This piece comes to you compliments of ACREL Fellow Steve Mezer of Becker & Poliakoff who has a front row view of Broadway for several reasons. He is on the Board of the Straz Performing Arts Center in Tampa that invests in and presents Broadway shows. He is also a theater aficionado who spends his free time in NYC with his wife Karen bingeing on Broadway and Off Broadway musicals. Broadway theater is a unique American cultural experience. Other cities have vibrant theater scenes, but no other American venue offers Broadway’s range of options. I recommend that you come a day early and stay a date later for our Fall meeting in New York and take in a couple of Broadway shows. I grew up 90 miles outside of New York City; Broadway was and remains a family staple. I can neither sing nor dance, but I have a great appreciation for musical theater. So here are my recommendations: Musicals: 2016 was one of Broadway’s most successful years as it presented many original works and attracted unprecedented attention with Hamilton and its record breaking (secondary market) ticket prices. October is a transition month, an exciting time to see a new Broadway show. Holiday Inn, an Irving Berlin musical, begins previews September 1, and opens on October 6 at Studio 54. Jim (played by Bryce Pinkham) leaves his farm in Connecticut and meets Linda (Laura Lee Gayer) a school teacher brimming with talent. Together they turn a farmhouse into an inn with dazzling performances to celebrate each holiday.

    IN BRIEF FOUNDING South Coast Repertory is a professional resident theatre founded in 1964 by David Emmes and Martin Benson. VISION Creating the finest theatre in America. LEADERSHIP SCR is led by Artistic Director David Ivers and Managing Director Paula Tomei. Its 33-member Board of Trustees is made up of community leaders from business, civic and arts backgrounds. In addition, hundreds of volunteers assist the theatre in reaching its goals, and about 2,000 individuals and businesses contribute each year to SCR’s annual and endowment funds. MISSION South Coast Repertory was founded in the belief that theatre is an art form with a unique power to illuminate the human experience. We commit ourselves to exploring urgent human and social issues of our time, and to merging literature, design, and performance in ways that test the bounds of theatre’s artistic possibilities. We undertake to advance the art of theatre in the service of our community, and aim to extend that service through educational, intercultural, and community engagement programs that harmonize with our artistic mission. FACILITY/ The David Emmes/Martin Benson Theatre Center is a three-theatre complex. Prior to the pandemic, there were six SEASON annual productions on the 507-seat Segerstrom Stage, four on the 336-seat Julianne Argyros Stage, with numerous workshops and theatre conservatory performances held in the 94-seat Nicholas Studio. In addition, the three-play family series, “Theatre for Young Audiences,” produced on the Julianne Argyros Stage. The 20-21 season includes two virtual offerings and a new outdoors initiative, OUTSIDE SCR, which will feature two productions in rotating rep at the Mission San Juan Capistrano in July 2021.

    AUGUST 2014 WELCOME It’s an intergenerational summer here at The Old Globe. Across the plaza in the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre, we are producing one of Shakespeare’s first plays, if not his very first: The Two Gentlemen of Verona, a piece about young men, adolescent love, and the dawning of adulthood. Here in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, on the stage of the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we explore a different phase of life, as the four characters in Ronald Harwood’s Quartet come to terms with life, love, and friendship after retirement. DOUG GATES Managing Director Michael G. Murphy and Artistic Director Barry Edelstein. To explore those rich themes in Quartet, we reap the great benefit of four performers with decades of experience to their credit. Robert Foxworth, of course, is a beloved Associate Artist of The Old Globe, last seen here in Other Desert Cities. He is joined by the acclaimed Elizabeth Franz, at long last making her Globe debut, as is seasoned Shakespearean Roger Forbes. The final member of the play’s quartet, Jill Tanner, returns to the Globe after a 30-year absence. And who better to lead such a team of actors than our own Richard Seer? Rick’s deft hand at comedy, his skill at staging in the round, and his ability to bring out the heart of a piece are all on ample display here.
