Th@ signilicanc@ ol S@rving Do you realize the magnitude of our Kappa Students' Aid Program? Here again Kappa Kappa Gamma excels among the Panhellenic groups. Our Fraternity has already contributed over half a million dollars to the higher education of women in America and in many foreign countries. This year alone we are awarding over fifteen thousand dollars. Women students members and non-members-have earned these awards by their high schol arship and active campus participation. This is another important area which has brought Kappa widespread recognition in the educational field. Our own Rose McGill Fund is one of the Kappas' main interests. It was established by the desire to assist . a young woman in her fight to regain her health. Expanding through the years, it has played a significant part in the lives of many Kappas both young and old. These borrowed words of a prominent fraternity man exemplify its merit: "This service alone would make any organization worthwhile." Kappa Kappa Gamma assists others in the local communities through the Rehabilitation Services established at the 1952 convention. Through our various alumn~ groups and university chapters we have adopted many worth-while projects which include material aid and service. Through this overall ph,ilanthropic program Kappa is fulfilling a vital service and civic responsibility. Each of us has an instrumental role in the continued success of these valuable endeavors. • Black Women's Music Database
By Stephanie Y. Evans & Stephanie Shonekan Black Women’s Music Database chronicles over 600 Africana singers, songwriters, composers, and musicians from around the world. The database was created by Dr. Stephanie Evans, a professor of Black women’s studies (intellectual history) and developed in collaboration with Dr. Stephanie Shonekon, a professor of Black studies and music (ethnomusicology). Together, with support from top music scholars, the Stephanies established this project to encourage interdisciplinary research, expand creative production, facilitate community building and, most importantly, to recognize and support Black women’s creative genius. This database will be useful for music scholars and ethnomusicologists, music historians, and contemporary performers, as well as general audiences and music therapists. Music heals. The purpose of the Black Women’s Music Database research collective is to amplify voices of singers, musicians, and scholars by encouraging public appreciation, study, practice, performance, and publication, that centers Black women’s experiences, knowledge, and perspectives. This project maps leading Black women artists in multiple genres of music, including gospel, blues, classical, jazz, R & B, soul, opera, theater, rock-n-roll, disco, hip hop, salsa, Afro- beat, bossa nova, soka, and more. • Then and Now Substantial Contributions to the History of Musical Theatre
THE OPPRESSION AND SEXISM OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMEN: THEN AND NOW SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HISTORY OF MUSICAL THEATRE by KELLI OWENS A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Honors in the Major Program in Musical Theatre in the College of Arts and Humanities and in the Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida Orlando, Florida Spring Term, 2014 Thesis Chair: Earl Weaver, MFA © 2014 Kelli Owens ii ABSTRACT A wise Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Freedom is never given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed (King 1).” For as long as men and women have shared the planet, sexism has been a universal issue in civilization. In a social justice context, American society has found ways to oppress people for centuries. The Oxford Dictionary defines sexism as a “prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex (“sexism”).” Voting rights in America were established in 1790, but it took years of petitioning at various women’s rights conventions before the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution stating "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex" was passed in 1920 (“Nineteenth Amendment”). Traditionally, men were supposed to be the strong, decisive, driven, courageous, money-making breed, while women were expected to be the nurturing, affectionate, weak subordinates. Today, we find men and women working in careers previously linked with sexism; men as nurses and teachers, women as CEOs and factory workers.
