We are a partnership project with staff at Council for Voluntary Services, Training Centre and Dove Workshop, . This is an innovative project to support Regenerate NPT in developing Neath Port Talbot as a good place to live with vibrant, sustainable communities and good quality of life (www.regenerate.npt.gov.uk). Since July 2016 we have provided over 25 training sessions and events, we have involved over 100 local participants, mentored 3 local business start-ups and supported 2 local networks. We carried out a land mapping exercise with Tai Tarian, the largest social housing provider for Neath Port Talbot, to find land that could be made available for community growing projects. Our aim was to support the establishment of a thriving local food and growing economy in Neath Port Talbot. Our funding comes from the Leader Fund provided by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Fund for Agriculture and Rural Development. We are very lucky to have the beautiful rural landscape of Neath Port Talbot, but we face challenges too. Access to fresh fruit and vegetables and other locally grown produce is a key issue in Neath Port Talbot. Poor transport links, poor health, a skills deficit and high childhood obesity rates are affecting local people along with the high impact of Welfare Reform and longstanding community deprivation. This project aimed to begin to tackle these impacts and to provide a feasibility study for further work tackling both these local issues and the global issues of environmental sustainability in the face of climate change, fossil fuel depletion and economic instability. It is hoped that this Directory will be a major boost for these local food and growing ventures and may be a springboard for more such ventures in Neath Port Talbot.

FOOD EVENTS Neath Indoor Market Neath has been a market town for a very long time perhaps dating right back to the Roman settlement. The current Victorian market on Green Street was built in 1904. The date of 1837 on the facade refers to an earlier market on the same site that had covered stalls around the perimeter for meat and fish stalls and a central open air market area for both established and casual traders. Prior to this the market was on what is now Old Market Street, The popularity of this even earlier market can be seen through the names of the surrounding streets the traders spilled on to: Butter Street, Cattle Street and Duck Street.

The Victorian market is now an eclectic place where you can find a hyper trendy posh hat and bag boutique next to a butcher’s counter. It is open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm (not open Sundays). Find more information on www.npt.gov.uk

COMMUNITY GROWERS NPT Community Growers Network 20 groups from throughout Neath Port Talbot have been involved in the creation of a network of community growers. From stalwart allotment growers growing season after season for decades on their plots at a number of sites managed by the Council and Town Councils, to brand new sites and projects created by community groups. These growers have a wide range of knowledge and skills about growing. There is renewed interest in all things green with more young people interested in gardening than there had been for many years. An event was held at Rheola Walled Garden to bring together the existing groups and establish them as a network with the potential to go forward. There were 14 people from 6 different groups at the event touring the gardens at Rheola and discussing the idea of the Growers Network.

Groups involved: Banwen Gardening Club, Cilybebyll Allotments, Crawford Road Allotments, Cwmavon Allotments, Cwm-ni Iach, Fairyland Allotments, FAN Melyn, Friends of the Earth, Glynneath Allotments, Glynneath Gardeners Club, Keep Wales Tidy, Longford Gardeners, Old Road Allotments, Pontrhydyfen Community Garden, Port Talbot YMCA, Rheola Community Garden, Rhyd y Fro Gardeners Club, Tonmawr Community Garden, Beekeepers, Y Banwen Community Garden.

COMMUNITY GROWERS Glynneath Training Centre at Rheola Walled Garden

Dating from about 1812 Rheola walled garden is the only remaining 19th century Walled Garden in the Neath valley. It lay abandoned and overgrown from the 1950s until 2009 when Glynneath Training Centre took on the task of clearing the garden, building paths and restoring the original stone walls. Three greenhouses were rebuilt, by local craftsmen which are now used for growing fruits, vegetables and other plants. Since July 2016 staff have received funding through the Tyfu’n Iach Gyda’n Gilydd project to continue their work.

We aim to use the garden as a venue to provide courses and training in horticulture and green crafts. We have rebuilt the old gardener’s cottage to be used as a space for these. To help fund our on-going activities we sometimes sell garden plants and produce.

Without the help of volunteers over seven years we could not have achieved all this, and are very keen for local people to help us turn ideas into reality - you will be very welcome and we can offer you the chance to develop gardening skills and the experience in working in a beautiful and historic environment.

Site features: • Vegetable beds • Red cedar greenhouses • Polytunnel • Trained fruit • Rainwater harvesting for irrigation and toilet flushing • Gravity fed drip-irrigation system • Woodland area, fire-pit circle • Wildlife pond • Willow beds (for basketry/crafts) • Gardener’s Cottage for meeting space and training venue • Children’s/family gardening sessions • Apple Orchard • Developing forest garden

To get involved please visit the centre in Oddfellows Street or ring 01639 721772 and ask for more information about volunteering and courses.
