Texas Junior High Division 2020 State Finals JUNE 22-27

Be A National Champion The Road to De Moines Goes Through Gonzales

Dear Junior High Contestants and Parents:

elcome back Texas State Junior High Rodeo State Finalists. With this being the 15th year for the event, Wwe commit to you a stay filled with a warm welcome and a sense of family. While here, enjoy one of our many restaurants, shops, historic sites or hotels. The opening of the JB Wells Expo Center made an incredible addition to the finals in 2016. The air conditioned comfort enjoyed by vendors and families was a testament to our commitment to making the finals an experience that everyone may enjoy. This belief continues today with improved cattle pens, clean, well maintained grounds and a dry area for tents. The comforts of home are at hand with electric and water supplies at each pad site. The Come and Take It spirit is alive and well in Gonzales. The Gonzales Battle Flag or the Come and Take It flag was first displayed on October 2, 1835 and Gonzales has been proud of it ever since. Coming in to town, we hope you noticed our 130 foot flagpole with the world’s largest Come and Take It flag. Our Memorial Museum is home to the little cannon that gave birth to the Lone Star State as well as other artifacts of revolutionary Texas and beyond. Other sites of historic interest are the Cost battlefield where the first shot for Texas Independence was fired, the Braches House east of town which is home to the Sam Houston Oak where Sam Houston camped to organize his army and a location which served as an old stage coach stop, the Old Jail Museum, historic J.B. Wells House Museum - a 15 room mansion built in 1885, Pioneer Village Living History Center - a collection of homes and buildings from the 1800’s, and the Sons of the Texas Pioneers Museum. The J.B. Wells Park features the historic Santa Anna Mound where you can walk up the trails to see where Santa Anna’s army camped and the Santa Anna Ford is located at the end of the park where Santa Anna’s army crossed the Guadalupe River. Please drop by our Visitors’ Center located in the Old Jail Museum and say hi to our friends at the Chamber of Commerce. For more touring and recreational opportunities, the Chamber can provide you with information for the Come and Take It Paddling Trail, our beautiful 9 hole golf course located on the banks of the Guadalupe River, booking a tour with the historic homes tour, a Texas history tour, give you details on the disc golf course, share information on Palmetto State Park which features pedal boats, canoe rentals, swimming and tubing, all located on 270 acres, and much more!! We will have staff onsite for the next week. If you need or want anything, please find one of our staff members. They will be wearing City of Gonzales shirts like the ones you saw when you checked in. It is our pleasure to assist you in any way possible while you are here. City Manager Tim Patek and I will be at the park much of the time during the week, as will members of our city council and city department directors. Please let us know how your stay is going. We are glad you are back home in Gonzales. We pray for the contestants’ safety, for fast times, for good weather, and your safe travels. On behalf of the Office of the Mayor, it is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to Gonzales, home of “Come and Take It!” For more information about Gonzales, where the Texas Revolution began, visit our Gonzales Chamber of Commerce and Visitors’ Center or our website at www. gonzalestexas.com. This position has enabled me to be able to travel to each of our amazing 10 rodeo regions throughout the great state of Texas. It has truly been inspiring to be able to meet all my fellow junior high rodeo athletes and see them compete in their own home regions! I was also able to personally meet and thank some of our organization’s biggest sponsors as well as tour some of their operations. I was also blessed to be able to represent this title as I traveled to Europe, taking the crown to Paris, France, Wyoming, at the Cheyenne , and back in Texas at the Fort Worth Rodeo and Stock Show, and the Houston Rodeo and Stock Show to name just a few. It was truly an extraordinary year and I enjoyed every minute of being a rodeo ambassador and spokesperson for TJHRA. As I spoke to the young women that I met in each of the 10 TJHRA regions this year, I hoped to encourage other young girls to compete for the Miss TJHRA title. In this position, you will be an ambassador for our rodeo association and western way of life, exemplify leadership and exceptional character for your peers, develop your public speaking skills, enhance your horsemanship and set a Christian example and embody God in all you do. To help the next titleholder and her successors, I am donating my beautiful red, white and blue TJHRA traveling and can’t wait to see where they go! I have also created a provincial pageant closet that will have outfits for her to hit the road looking like a true princess! I want to sincerely thank everyone that donated items to help these young women look their best while holding a state title! I want to wish all the contestants competing for Miss TJHJRA good luck and to the next titleholder, have a wonderful year and Godspeed. I also want to congratulate all the contestants that qualified for state finals this year! I wish you all the best in your journey as you compete this week to qualify for Nationals. I will be watching from the stands and cheering all of you on! Make sure each of you thanks your families for supporting you and the Texas Junior High Rodeo Association. In closing, I want to thank God, my amazing TJHRA Pageant Co-Coordinators, Rachel Robbins, Sarah Rowlands and Donna Nichols, former TJHRA Pageant Coordinator, Dawn Tripp, TJHRA Secretary, Ann Dollery, TJHRA President Scott Shook, my home Region III and Region III Secretary, Kelley Williams, my fellow TJHRA student officers President, Garrett Talamantes, Vice President, Emma McCarthy, and Secretary, Kinley Shook for supporting me though my journey this year. And, I can’t forget to thank my mom, Charmaine Braun Sundberg and my step-dad, Sean Sundberg for their continued support of me in my beloved sport of rodeo and rodeo pageants. I have made many great memories and will always look back on this year fondly. With love and Godspeed, Miss TJHRA 2019, Vie Vie Blanchard The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord. ~ Proverbs 21:31
