A ROUND-UP OF 2019: MERSEY MARITIME’S GLOBAL INFLUENCE INCREASES IN ANOTHER YEAR OF GROWTH AND ACHIEVEMENT FROM CHRIS SHIRLING-ROOKE

It has been another amazing year of growth and achievement for Mersey Maritime and its ever-expanding membership base. 2019 was a year when City Region’s £4bn maritime sector was able to highlight its growing influence on both the national and

E global maritime sector. And, with Brexit potentially re-establishing the Mersey as a Transatlantic trade gateway, more great times lie

C ahead. Reading through this round-up of the year, you’ll notice one theme

E remains constant: a resolute focus on Mersey Maritime’s members.

I From a full and packed monthly ‘Face to Face’ series of networking breakfasts to the launch of two specialist forums around International Trade and Offshore & Energy (with the promise of one P focused on technology in 2020) and the opportunity for members to

drop in for advice and support at open ‘surgeries’, profiling and helping our members thrive is what we are all about and always will T be! Nations Forum H January saw Mersey Maritime, owner Peel Ports and Royal HaskoningDHV take part in the Maritime Nations Forum,

G organised by Maritime UK and the Netherlands Business Support Office. More than 100 delegates attended including 30 Dutch companies U and members of the Dutch Government. The overall message was that the UK’s departure from the EU does not mean the UK is

O leaving Europe and the focus of the forum was how the British and Dutch maritime sectors can forge stronger ties post-Brexit.

H At the end of January it was revealed that Mersey Maritime was to

play a leading role in the Government’s newly published long-term

strategy for the UK maritime sector.

Maritime 2050 aims to set a ‘roadmap’ for the growth of the maritime industries over the coming decades, with its importance thrown into sharp focus due to Britain’s imminent departure from the European Union. Described as both “visionary and aspirational”, the strategy highlights the Government’s recognition of the importance of the maritime sector – worth more to the economy than aerospace or car manufacturing.

MMIA19 In February, Mersey Maritime hailed the success of the new industry voting platform for the fifth Mersey Maritime Industry Awards, due to be held in the March. More than 1,000 votes were cast using the new platform – demonstrating a high level of engagement from the local and national maritime sector.

More than 400 guests packed into the Rum Warehouse at Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel to see the celebration of the companies, individuals and projects that are transforming, growing and creating positive impact within the industry. The awards were hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Louise Minchin, with keynote speaker, Harry Theochari, chair of Maritime UK and also a special appearance from the Ellesmere Port Cadet Band.

Mersey Maritime chief executive Chris Shirling-Rooke, told the audience: “We can achieve so much more as an industry if we are working together, which is why the landmark Government Maritime 2050 report is so important as this sets out the future direction for the industry. Mersey Maritime is not only aligned to Maritime 2050 but is leading the way.” | DECEMBER 2019 PAGE | 04

The Maritime Exchange Liverpool welcomed some of the biggest names in the UK’s maritime sector in June when Mersey Maritime launched their inaugural annual conference; The Maritime Exchange. Sir Michael Bibby - President, UK Chamber of Shipping Laura Marquis - Head of Strategy and Partnerships, Department for Transport Lesley Batchelor OBE – Director General, Institute of Export Sarah Kenny – Chief Executive of BMT and Vice Chair of Maritime UK Debbie Cavaldoro – Head of Strategy, Nautilus Tim Morris – Chief Executive of UK Major Ports Group Asbjorn Kops – Head of Products (UK and Ireland), Sarah Thompson – Regional Security Advisor, Chevron Global Security Alex Lawson – Director of Hedging, Western Union Business Solutions Capt Rich Harris – Commanding Officer of HMS Raleigh Chris Rowland – Managing Director, MDS Transmodal Terry Weston – Chief Executive, The Engineering College Raal Harris – Managing Director, KVH Videotel Clive Hickman – Chief Executive, Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) Tom Davenport – Operations Manager, Bibby HydroMap Alan Tinline – Head of Environment, ABP Capt Andrew Stacey – Exercise Director, Royal Navy Global stage and LISW19 In the summer, Chris demonstrated Mersey Maritime’s role as a leading maritime voice on the global stage when he called for the Ministry of Defence to urgently ‘beef up’ the UK’s naval capability following reports the Iranians had seized a British oil tanker. “Our defence and commercial needs don’t come cheap,” he said. “As a proud maritime nation, it is time to put our money where our mouth is as a country and ensure our investment in the Royal Navy is protected and increased in the years ahead.” PAGE | 05 | DECEMBER 2019

In September, Mersey Maritime led a high-powered city region delegation, which also included Peel Group, Beech Group, Kays Medical and Western Union Business Solutions, to London International Shipping Week, one of the largest maritime events in the world. The packed programme of conferences, seminars and networking receptions saw maritime leaders come together to showcase the UK’s £40bn maritime sector. Mersey Maritime, now established as the UK’s leading maritime cluster organisation, played a full role in the week by promoting the work of its members across the Liverpool City Region at key events. The delegation also took along the Champions League trophy just weeks after Liverpool FC had won it for the sixth time, showcasing it at a very busy ‘Mersey on the Thames’ evening reception in the iconic ‘Cheesegrater’ building.

Top accolade In September, Mersey Maritime scooped a top accolade at the first national Maritime UK Awards, winning the Coastal Powerhouse category which sought to recognise the breadth and diversity of every aspect of the maritime industry in the United Kingdom. Hosted by the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership, an expert panel of judges revealed their final choice at a gala dinner which took place at The Leonardo Royal Southampton Grand Harbour Hotel during the Southampton International Boat Show. Maritime Impact Study In October Mersey Maritime, working with Maritime UK and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), released a report commissioned to determine how important the region’s maritime industry is to the national economy and the Liverpool City Region. It found that the maritime sector clustered around the Mersey directly drove £4.2bn in domestic output through business turnover in 2017. Compared to 2010, Liverpool City Region’s domestic output levels across the sector have grown by 118% – approximately £1bn. It also produced £650m in GVA and supported 52,000 jobs in the city region. also outperformed the UK average GVA per employee. In 2017, LCR maritime productivity stood at £81,461, while the UK average sat at £54,330. | DECEMBER 2019 PAGE | 06

Later that same month, Mersey Maritime joined a new partnership, the Offshore Energy Alliance, to promote the growth of the huge offshore energy sector and its supply chain. Liverpool City Region has become a leader in offshore energy following the construction of the Burbo Bank and Burbo Bank Extension wind farms in Liverpool Bay, which provide electricity for more than 300,000 homes. The Government plans to significantly increase the UK’s offshore wind capacity over the next two decades as part of the Offshore Wind Sector Deal and Maritime 2050: Navigating the Future strategies. UK-USA Trade Mission In November, Chris Shirling-Rooke took Mersey Maritime back on to the world stage when he joined a major maritime trade mission to the US with the UK’s post-Brexit transatlantic free trade deal high on the agenda. He teamed up with colleagues at Maritime UK and the UK Government. The mission focused on the UK-US Maritime Nations Forum, which was first held in New York last year aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth and this year took place in Washington DC. The forum celebrated the strength of UK-US relations and explored further areas for collaboration, specifically covering developments in each respective national maritime sector. There were also discussions around key areas for negotiation in a future UK-US free trade agreement and what opportunities exist for enhanced collaboration and best practice sharing.

MMIA20 launch The end of November saw the launch of the sixth annual Mersey Maritime Industry Awards 2020, which is promised to be even bigger and better than ever. And the early signs are promising with the number of entries heading for another record. The awards ceremony will take place at St George’s Hall on Friday 6 March 2020. The awards are now fully sponsored. For full details, see the article starting on page 8. PAGE | 07 | DECEMBER 2019

NEW ‘MEGAMAX’ CRANES ARRIVE AT PORT OF LIVERPOOL AFTER 18,000-MILE JOURNEY

Peel Ports has taken delivery of three ‘megamax’ quayside cranes that have travelled all the way from China and will be installed at the Liverpool2 container terminal. The cranes, which were seen sailing up the , are part of work on the second phase of the Liverpool2 project to provide additional capacity for growing volumes of cargo. Their arrival follows Peel Ports announcing a record-breaking month for its container operations at the Port of Liverpool. Quayside and landside throughput in October exceeded all previous figures on record with year on year growth of 12%. Peel Ports handles 60m tonnes of cargo every year - 13% of the total UK major ports traffic flows through ports operated by the group, which include Liverpool, Heysham, Manchester Ship Canal, Medway (Sheerness / Chatham), Clydeport and Great Yarmouth. The cranes arrived on the ZH25 transporter vessel and are now alongside the berth at the south of the Liverpool2 terminal ready for offloading. They originally set off from on September 15 passing south- east Asia, India, the Arabian Peninsula and Africa via the Cape of Good Hope en route to Liverpool in a journey of more than 18,000 miles. Mark Whitworth, chief executive of Peel Ports, said: “An increasing number of businesses are understanding that it makes more sense to ship products closer to their end destinations. | DECEMBER 2019 PAGE | 12

“The investment we’ve made in these cranes and elsewhere at the port is crucial to providing us with the capacity to meet growing demand, especially with Liverpool handling record container volumes in October.” The super-structures were produced by Chinese company, Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co (ZPMC), the largest heavy-duty equipment manufacturer in the world, as part of a contract with Peel Ports worth more than £100m. A total of eight ship-to-shore megamax cranes and 22 cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes are being supplied to Peel Ports. Each crane measures 92 metres high to the top of the frame, approximately the same as Liverpool’s iconic Liver building, and 132 metres high when the boom is raised. Each crane weighs around 1,600 tonnes. The cranes can operate at speeds more than 30 moves per hour and facilitate 1,500 moves in each tidal window. They are capable of twin-pick and outreach of 24 containers up to 10 high on deck, and safe working loads of up to 85 tonnes. They can operate in wind speeds of up to 55 miles per hour. Peel Ports recently entered into an agreement with global terminal business, Terminal Investment Limited Sarl (TiL). The proposed joint venture involves the development of the Liverpool2 container terminal and will enable Peel Ports to accelerate its ambitious growth plans.

MARITIME UK CHAIR RESPONDS TO GENERAL ELECTION RESULT

Commenting on the result of the general election, Maritime UK Chair, Harry Theochari, said: "We urge the Prime Minister to use his majority to give confidence and certainty to businesses by preventing a damaging and disorderly Brexit. "Leaving the EU is a mammoth task and we will continue to assist government with preparing for departure and in working on the future trading relationships our country will agree with both the European Union and others across the world. As the sector that facilitates 95% of the UK's global trade, maritime is critical to that mission.

BIBBY LINE GROUP SELLS DUKE STREET HEADQUARTERS

Bibby Line Group has sold its 57,000 sq ft former headquarters in Liverpool for an undisclosed sum. The famous Liverpool maritime business, that dates back to 1807, announced in September that it was relocating its Liverpool headquarters and 150 employees from Duke Street to Walker House, Exchange Flags, in the city’s commercial district. The company was based in Duke Street for more than 25 years. The building has been sold to developer, CERT Property Group. Bibby Line Group is a diverse, £800m-turnover business, operating in 16 countries and employing 4,000 people in retail, financial services, distribution, marine and construction equipment hire. Chief executive John Cresswell said: “Duke Street has served us well over the last 25 years but relocating to Exchange Flags brings us closer to the centre of the business community and provides our fantastic team with a new, modern working environment, better equipped for the needs of current and future colleagues and customers.” Howard Lord, managing director of CERT, added: "Our intention is to create a contemporary working environment for businesses of all sizes while celebrating the building's stunning heritage features. We will be working in collaboration with a fantastic delivery team and look forward to releasing more details of our plans in due course.” Property consultancy Avison Young advised Bibby Line Group on the deal and CERT Property Group was advised by B1 Real Estate. Ian Steele, principal at Avison Young, said: “We understand that it is the purchaser’s intention to retain the building on Duke Street for office use which is really positive news as Liverpool, has lost in excess of 2m sq ft of office space to other alternative uses during the course of the last few years and which further supports the continued growth and investment in the Ropewalks area.” Read more about Bibby Line Group at: bibbylinegroup.co.uk | DECEMBER 2019 PAGE | 16

WORK BEGINS ON RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS AT WIRRAL WATERS

Building work has begun on three residential sites at Wirral Waters. Peel L&P, has received £6m funding from Homes England to assist with the necessary site remediation work across all three residential projects, including Wirral Waters One, House by Urban Splash and Belong Village. The grant, which is one of the biggest ever HIF (Housing Infrastructure Fund) grants to be awarded outside London, will go towards essential remediation, infrastructure and public realm work, including cycling and pedestrian routes, to support the new homes. The improvements will include a wider programme of streetscape work, such as the creation of dockside walkways and new public squares; improvements to connectivity between local bus and ferry services, cycles ways and pedestrian routes; and improvements to local amenities and car parking. The three residential projects will include Wirral Waters One, a £90m development of one and two-bedroom apartments and affordable homes; a £55m House by Urban Splash development of modern, modular homes; and Belong Village, a specialist dementia care village. Richard Mawdsley, director of development for Wirral Waters at Peel L&P, said: “This is an important moment as work finally begins on these three impressive housing projects, and the first of many residential schemes to be built at Wirral Waters. “Homes England have been incredibly supportive of Wirral Waters from the very beginning - and this £6m HIF grant illustrates just how crucial brownfield regeneration projects, like Wirral Waters, are in tackling the current UK housing crisis. It will also assist in relieving pressure off Wirral’s greenbelt. “The public realm improvements along Northbank will give prospective residents and investors their first glimpse of the dramatic improvements we’re making to regenerate the dockland area and to be reassured of the quality of the residential neighbourhood being delivered. “It will also ensure that this much-needed residential quarter – a genuine place for all - is well-connected to Liverpool and beyond from day one, when the very first residents move in.” For more information visit: wirralwaters.co.uk PAGE | 17 | DECEMBER 2019
