Indian Institute of Technology Ropar is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of in the year 2008, to expand the reach and enhance the quality of technical education in the country. This institute is committed to providing state-of-the-art technical education in a variety of fields and also for facilitating transmission of knowledge in keeping with latest developments in pedagogy. These two areas of focus enable students to gain exposure to recent trends in their chosen domains of study and gain practical experience through a wide variety of activities the institute facilitates in its own campus and arranges for in collaboration with industry and other institutes. At present, the institute offers Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) program in Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. This program is spread over a period of eight semesters and the institute admits forty students in each branch, selected through IIT Joint Entrance Examination conducted every year. In addition, the institute offers doctoral program in several disciplines.

Established with the inception of IIT Ropar in 2008, the Department of Mechanical Engineering was re-organized as the School of Mechanical, Materials and Energy Engineering (SMMEE) in 2010 to encourage interdisciplinary research. The school currently offers UG and Ph. D. programs in Mechanical Engineering. The school has a dedicated faculty in all the major areas of mechanical engineering such as design and analysis, fluids and thermal engineering, materials, and manufacturing. In addition to the conventional core courses, the school offers state-of-the-art courses and research opportunities in areas such as product design and realization, sustainability for engineers, continuum mechanics, medical devices and equipments, biomechanics, control engineering, noise and vibration, finite element analysis, energy science and technology, robotics and mechatronics, micro-manufacturing, and tribology. Various laboratories have been set up with modern facilities for strengthening teaching and research.

Undergraduate and Ph.D. Programs

The School of Mechanical, Materials & Energy Engineering currently offers Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech.) in Mechanical Engineering and Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering. Its current intake is about 40 students in B.Tech. program every year. In addition, several Ph.D. students are admitted every year. The first undergraduate batch of students completed their degrees in 2012.

The School focuses on teaching and research in all the core research areas of mechanical engineering, specifically design, manufacturing, materials, and thermal sciences. Apart from the courses that are traditionally taught as a part of mechanical engineering, as included in the GATE syllabus, the School also encourages students to credit advanced level courses such as, finite elements, biomechanics, tribology, micro- manufacturing and optimization methods.

6 Central Facilities

Central Library

The Central Library functions as the primary information resource centre, and repository of all printed and e- resources for teaching and research activities at the institute. Apart from textbooks and recommended reading material prescribed for each course offered at the institute, the library houses a growing collection of research monographs, reports, multi-volume reference works, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, and so on. The library facilitates access to a number of journals through its participation in consortia, such as INDEST, UGC- INFLIBNET. The library also subscribes to several e-journals directly from publishers as well as through reputed subscription agencies. At present, users can consult more than 9000 books (available on shelves) and thousands of electronic books and journals. Online access is also provided to citation and scientometric databases such as Scopus, MathSciNet and ASTM.

7 X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Laboratory The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) laboratory of the institute has a PANalytical X'Pert PRO MPD X-ray diffraction system, which is a basic platform for a wide variety of applications in analytical X- ray diffraction, in both scientific and industrial research environments. XRD is a non-destructive analytical technique used for analyzing various materials and surface properties, especially at the atomic and molecular level. The institute offers XRD analysis services to various industries and institutions on nominal charges.

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) / Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) Laboratory Another sophisticated research tool that IIT Ropar houses is the SEM, which produces details of the surface of a given material through sample scanning with a focused beam of electrons. SEM is used for studying surface characteristics of materials, while EDS can give compositional (elemental) details. It is a very useful equipment for industrial, as well as, scientific community. Industry can use it for failure analysis. SEM / EDS services are also available for industry

Nano-Indentor Laboratory Nano indenter is one of the state-of-the-art comprehensive bio and nano mechanical characterization systems. IIT Ropar is the pioneer institute to have such unique facility in the entire North India. Nano indenter can be used to determine modulus of elasticity, hardness, yield strength, fracture toughness, scratch hardness and wear properties. It can be used for almost all types of hard and soft materials including biomaterials.

Bio Materials & Nano Materials Characterization Laboratory Bio-Nano-Mechanical Characterization (BNMC) Laboratory is dedicated to the area of Bio and Nano materials' engineering with a focus on the combined experimental characterization, as well as, computational analysis of mechanical properties, stress / strain, and micro-structure of engineering and biological materials and their applications in advancing manufacturing and materials processing technologies, engineering design analyses, and biomedical sciences and engineering.

Cell Culture & Tissue Engineering Laboratory (Up-coming) Cell Culture & Tissue Engineering Laboratory will cater to the needs of researchers

working in bio-mechanical engineering. The lab is planned to have CO2 incubator, bio- safety cabinet, fluorescent microscope etc. The current needs are fulfilled by IIT Ropar's collaboration with various institutes around Chandigarh.

Control Engineering Laboratory Control Engineering Laboratory is an interdisciplinary laboratory. Main area of work is feed back control systems design and analysis, control system for biomedical applications, sensors, actuator, signal processing and various type of transducers.

Design Research Laboratory Design Research Laboratory aims at the development of methodologies, tools, and techniques for better, robust, and inclusive product design to achieve success in New Product Development (NPD). Design research investigates the process of designing products, processes, and services. It aims to help designers design better products and processes. The lab is planned to be equipped with sketching tools, collaborative design tools and design research tools.

Design Studio Laboratory Design Studio Laboratory is essentially a lab for exploring products, creating new products and displaying them to the public. It houses drafting facility, product realization facility and has a set of computers for research and design products. The lab is a focal point for academic and industry collaboration in product development.

9 Indoor Environment Control Laboratory The main aim of the Indoor Environment Control Laboratory is to give practical insights and hands-on experience to the undergraduate students of mechanical engineering in developing their understanding in various air-conditioning and refrigeration processes, encountering in real life situations. Facilities available in the lab include refrigeration test rig, air-conditioner test rig, heat pump test rig, vapor absorption refrigeration setup and ice plant test rig.

Machine Design Laboratory Machine Design Research Laboratory (MDRL) contributes to educate the undergraduate students, as well as, the research related to Mechanical Design. The mission of MDRL is innovative mechanical component design, improve design quality, shorten design time, and enhance design education. This also includes machine components design, static and dynamics analysis of machine components, stress and strain analysis, computer assisted modeling and design, and component design using FEM approach.

Materials Science & Engineering Laboratory This laboratory is equipped with several basic material engineering equipments and instruments, along with some highly sophisticated equipments such as CETR tribometer and planetary ball mill. Material testing equipments are also available, which include UTM, micro- and macro-hardness testers. Some tribological test rigs are also developed in- house by the students. The laboratory is also capable of catering to the material testing needs of industry.

Mechatronics with Robotic Applications Laboratory Mechatronics with Robotic Applications Laboratory endeavors to be a platform for the students interested in developing their skills in electro-mechanical aspects. The basic aim of the laboratory is to render both the thinking and the creative capabilities of the students. Facilities available in the lab include robotic arm and related tools from KUKA and SIMPRO. Building systems from LEGO and TETRIX are available to build robotic mechanisms and prototypes. Basic electronics components and practice kits are also made available for practice.

Product Design & Realization Computer Laboratory Product Design and Realization Computer Laboratory is equipped with 16 high end and 17 medium end workstations with the latest CAD modeling/analysis software, viz. Catia V6 and Solid Works 2013, Abaqus/CAE 6.11- 1, and AutoCAD 2013. This laboratory caters to the needs of UG and PG students for regular course work, final year B. Tech. projects, and research work.

Product Design & Realization Manufacturing Laboratory Product Design and Realization Manufacturing Laboratory is equipped with both manual, as well as, CNC machines, along with a non-conventional (EDM-Wire Cut) machine and a 3-D printer. A high-end Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is also available, which is open for services to industry and other institutions. State-of-the-art tool dynamometers and modulation-assisted machining set-ups are also used for conducting R&D in the machining areas. The students are encouraged in this laboratory to manufacture their designed products, which they showcase during “Design Fair” at the of each semester.

Sustainable Product Design & Manufacturing Laboratory Sustainable Product Design and Manufacturing (SPDM) Laboratory started with the intention of conducting research, teaching and consultancy in the area of sustainable design and sustainable manufacturing. The laboratory is equipped with expertise, tools, and systems for sustainability assessment of products, standard analysis, and sustainable manufacturing.

Vibration & Acoustics Research Laboratory Vibration and Acoustics Research Laboratory (VARL) is equipped with the necessary expertise and the state-of-the- art instrumentation required for measurement, analysis, and control of undesired motion and noise in structures and machinery. In addition, short courses can be designed in the field of noise and vibration control to meet the needs of industry. Presently, VARL is focusing on investigating and developing advanced methods for active and passive noise, and vibration control systems.

13 Placements and Internships IIT Ropar students who graduated with B.Tech degrees in Mechanical Engineering are now pursuing careers in several well-known organizations, such as, HPCL, Indian Oil, DRDO, Tata Motors, L&T, BPCL, and ONGC. Additionally, several of our graduates are pursuing higher education and research at world-renowned institutes in India and abroad.

Thirty-eight current UG students from SMMEE have recently completed summer internships from organizations such as Zeus Numerix, Aston University UK, Bloom Energy, AECOM India, Max India, NFTDC, TimeTooth Technologies, National Fertilizer, Hero MotoCorp, Maruti Suzuki, DCM Engineering, Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, Alstom and foreign universities in Germany through DAAD support. The feedback about our students from these organizations has been overwhelmingly positive.

Academic-Industry Interaction The School of Mechanical, Materials, and Energy Engineering is keen to collaborate with industries and other academic partners, both within India and outside, to develop new products, processes, and services for society. In particular, we invite industries to contact us for any possible collaboration or working on technical issues. IIT Ropar, being one of the funded institutes, is mandated to aid companies to help them grow and thus support the Indian economy. With expertise ranging from nano-technology, manufacturing, thermal, automobile, design to biomechanics, SMMEE is equipped with highly qualified faculties, who are eager to take up challenging problems. Additionally, the faculties have good access to both internal and external funding, faculties of other departments such as computer science, electrical, physics, humanities, mathematics, chemistry, and local and national companies. Moreover, IIT Ropar currently has active collaborations with many national (such as, IIM Lucknow, IIT Delhi) and international (such as, Aston University, University of Cambridge, Imperial College and Simon Fraser University) institutes and research labs/centres (such as, DRDO, CSIO and PGIMER) to work on high-impact research areas. In addition, the students of the institute are highly inspired, intelligent and hard working, who always look forward for some exciting and challenging industry-based projects.

14 Other Initiatives NKN Funding Facts The National Knowledge Network (NKN) is a revolutionary state-of- the-art multi-gigabit pan-Indian resource-sharing network aimed at digitally connecting all national universities, colleges and research establishments to create country-wide virtual classrooms. To begin with 1,200 major institutions including the IITs, CSIR laboratories, space research and atomic energy institutions will be connected digitally. The infrastructure bandwidth will facilitate high speed classroom sessions. One can even transmit satellite television programmes using the facility. With just 4 megabit connectivity an institution can simultaneously conduct up to 250 classroom sessions.

RuTAG Centre The vision of the Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) Centre is to become an innovative rural INR 1.3 Crore of technology development group Internal Grants comprising academicians, scientists, personnel from NGOs, More than INR 1 Crore governmental agencies and budget of the department technical institutes, traditional craftsmen and artisans, farmers for the last year and social entrepreneurs with a passion to serve the rural people. Its mission is to develop state-of-the-art science & technology INR 2.46 Crore of resources, equipments, human resources and research facilities External Funding to innovate rural technologies by utilizing the existing and creative know-how with the involvement of people from rural areas and INR 17 Lakh from NGOs. Several projects are in-progress under this scheme at IIT Consultancy Funding Ropar.
