Language centres: keeping language strong Anna Ash, Pauline Hooler, Gary Williams and Ken Walker1 Abstract We begin by describing the history and main activities of Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Co-operative and Many Rivers Aboriginal Language Centre. Comments from Elders, language teachers and researchers are included to reflect the opinions of a diverse range of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. We discuss some aspects of research, publishing, language education and information technology. Finally we make some recommendations for groups who are just starting out on this challenging but rewarding road. This volume was at least partially inspired by The green book of language revitalization in practice. There is a chapter in that book called ‘Diversity in Local Language Maintenance and Restoration: A Reason for Optimism’. It emphasises that there is a positive future for the revitalisation of Aboriginal languages: There is reason for optimism because local language communities all over the world are taking it upon themselves to act on behalf of their imperilled linguistic traditions in full understanding of, and in spite of, the realistic perception that the cards are stacked against them. There is, in effect an international movement in which local communities work in defiance of the forces pitted against their embattled languages. It has something of the character of a modern miracle, if you think about it – while they share the goal of promoting a local language, these groups are essentially independent of one another, coming together sometimes to compare notes, but operating in effective separation. Keywords to Remember 9. Other Protocol Resource Documents 2 What Are Protocols? Protocols can be classified as a set of rules, regulations, processes, procedures, strategies, or guidelines. Protocols are simply the ways in which you work with people, and communicate and collaborate with them appropriately. They are a guide to assist you with ways in which you can work, communicate and collaborate with the Indigenous community of Western Sydney. A wealth of Indigenous protocols documentation already exists (see Section 9), but to date the practice of following them is not widespread. Protocols are also standards of behaviour, respect and knowledge that need to be adopted. You might even think of them as a code of manners to observe, rather than a set of rules to obey. -

Durithunga – Growing, nurturing, challenging and supporting urban Indigenous leadership in education i Language Weaves As highlighted in the following thesis, there are a number of key words and phrases that are typographically different from the rest of the thesis writing. Shifts in font and style are used to accent Indigenous world view and give clear signification to the higher order thought and conceptual processing of words and their deeper meaning within the context of this thesis (Martin, 2008). For ease of transition into this thesis, I have created the “Language Weaves” list of key words and phrases that flow through the following chapters. The list below has been woven in Migloo alphabetical order. The challenge, as I explore in detail in Chapter 5 of this thesis, is for next generations of Indigenous Australian writers to relay textual information in the languages of our people from our unique tumba tjinas. Dissecting my language usage in this way and creating a Language Weaves list has been very challenging, but is part of sharing the unique messages of this Indigenous Education field research to a broader, non- Indigenous and international audience. The following weaves list consists of words taken directly from the thesis. -
Contextualised Learning and Young Indigenous Australian Children
Looking for the X-factors: Contextualised learning and young Indigenous Australian children Associate Professor Karen Martin is a Noonuccal woman from Minjerripah (North Stradbroke Island – south-east Queensland) and also has Bidjara ancestry (central Queensland). She is a qualified early childhood educator who has taught for more than 15 years in Aboriginal community education services (early childhood, compulsory schooling, adult training) in remote, regional and urban areas of Queensland. She is a James Cook University Medallist (2007) and NAIDOC Scholar of the Year (2008) and has over 20 years of experience in higher education lecturing in Aboriginal Australian Studies, Aboriginal education and Associate Professor Karen L Martin early childhood education. Karen is currently employed as Associate Professor in the School of Education and Griffith University Professional Studies at Griffith University. She is Deputy Chair of the Griffith University Human Research Ethics Committee and also Deputy Chair of the Longitudinal Study of Indigenous Children (Department of Social Services). Her latest research is called: ‘Looking for the X-factor: Contextualised learning and young Indigenous Australian children’. This project is a recipient of an Education Horizons research grant from the Queensland Department of Education and Training. Stuart Fuller worked for a number of years in a sugar mill and then in a university maintenance department before completing his education degree. He has taught for more than 20 years, with most of this time spent as a teaching principal in small schools in the Lockyer Valley and south of Toowoomba. He began his teaching at Bwgcolman Community School on Palm Island, spent a year as a deputy principal at Kununurra District High School, and has been the principal at Cherbourg State School since the beginning of 2016. -

The information contained in this report was considered by the ACT Heritage Council in assessing the nomination for the Corroboree Ground and Aboriginal Cultural Area, Queanbeyan River against the heritage significance criteria outlined in s 10 of the Heritage Act 2004. HISTORY The Ngunnawal people are traditionally affiliated with the lands within the Canberra region. In this citation, ‘Aboriginal community’ refers to the Ngunnawal people and other Aboriginal groups within the ACT who draw significance from the place. Whilst the term ‘Aboriginal community’ acknowledges these groups in the ACT, it is recognised that their traditional territories extend outside contemporary borders. These places attest to a rich history of Aboriginal connection to the area. Traditional Aboriginal society in Canberra during the nineteenth century suffered from dramatic depopulation and alienation from traditional land based resources, although some important social institutions like intertribal gatherings and corroborees were retained to a degree at least until the 1860s. -

The purpose of the field trips was to document the languages and songs of the Madhi Madhi, Parnkalla, Kurnai, Gunditjmara, Yorta Yorta, Paakantyi, Ngarigo, Wemba Wemba and Wergaia peoples. -

Institutionalisation of Aborigines, under the guise of assimilation and protection policies, was only abandoned in.the lg7Os. It is therefore important to understand the implications of these policies for Aborigines and Australian society in general. I investigate the affect of institutionalisation on Aborigines, questioning the assumption tl.at they were passive victims forced onto missions and government stations and kept there as virtual prisoners. -
