  • CHAR DHAM HINDU TEMPLE Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 10
CHAR DHAM HINDU TEMPLE SPECIAL PRAYER AND BRICK CEREMONY Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 10:00 AM 8044 College Park Dr. The Woodlands, TX 77384. The Char Dham Hindu Temple in The Woodlands will be a unique temple with all the four temples in one location, and the only one of its kind in the world. The design is modeled after the Char Dham temples (Char means four, and Dham means temple) located at four corners of India today – Jagannath Dham at Puri in the East, Dwarakanath Dham at Dwarka in the West, Badrinath Dham at Badrinath in the North, and Rameswaram Dham at Rameswaram in the South. Char Dhams are regarded as extremely sacred to all Hindus and pilgrimage to the Char Dhams at least once in a lifetime is a dream come true for Hindu devotees. It is further believed that Adi Shankaracharya purposefully established these four Dhams in four corners of India during the 8th century, in an attempt to revive the Hindu religion and unify all Hindus across the country. The construction of the Char Dham Hindu Temples in The Woodlands is just beginning. As part of this ceremony participants will receive bricks dedicated in their name to be built into the temples and be remembered through the life of the temple. Participating families will be provided with a set of four bricks – one for each Char Dham temple. The bricks will have the families’ names identified on them. Participants will join in prayers led by our priests and at the end of the ceremony, the bricks will be taken by each family and placed on the four temple ground locations where they will be used to construct the temples.

Since pilgrimage is an integral part of Indian culture and has significant participation, pilgrimage sites and centres are being used by political and corporate organisations to communicate specific messages. The political relevance of religion in our contemporary world cannot be disputed, particularly in the context of a growing consumerist culture and the divisive tactics of most political organisations. In such a scenario, pilgrimage traditions and centres are periodically taken over by political groups.

  • Mountain, Water, Rock
Introduction In the Direction of Kedar When one had almost reached the Hindu shrine of Kedarnath, there used to be a point along the footpath following the Mandakini River where, in good weather, the top of the temple came into view against the backdrop of a bright, wide Himalayan panorama. In the related languages of Hindi and Garhwali, such vantage points bear the title of “Sight-of-God” (Hindi: devdarshini, deodekhni). Devdarshini is the point from which you are first able to glimpse the deity of a particular place, in this case Shiva in his Kedarnath form. Before June of 2013, devdarshini was located above the western bank of the Mandakini River, about two kilometers from the temple and twelve kilometers from the beginning of the footpath in the village of Gaurikund. The temple of Kedarnath lies on the valley floor at almost 3,600 meters above sea level, enfolded on three sides by mountains. Almost all travelers to Kedarnath, from perennial residents to first-time visitors to non-Indian regular visitors such as myself, used to stop at devdarshini to catch their breath, encounter the view, and take stock of the place where they were about to arrive. Devdarshini often evokes a strong response. I once spoke with a woman from the Indian state of Maharashtra who had come to Kedarnath seven times.1 She said that when she arrived at devdarshini she experienced what in Hindi is called sakshat darshan—a visual encounter with (or more technically a visual knowing of) the divine in its most true form.

Specifically, this research aims to assess the tourism potential of holy Hindu temple sites located along well-known pilgrimage routes. During our fieldwork, we visited several of the most significant Hindu temples in India. Framed by a critical ethnography lens, our study used unstructured interviews with local stakeholders, as well as observations and reflexive notes. The findings revealed that most of the temples have serious safety, hygiene, accessibility, and environmental issues. A lack of action could lead to serious consequences for locals and tourists. For example, important for tourism, warnings of pandemics have been sounded over the years, and disease pandemics originating in India may only be a matter of time. We propose some immediate solutions and areas for future research.

Newsletter Archives www.dollsofindia.com Char Dham - The Four Most Sacred Pilgrimages of Hindus Copyright © 2016, DollsofIndia Char Dham, literally meaning, four pilgrimage sites, are the temples that are among the most highly venerated Hindu Vaishnavite temples in India. These four places of pilgrimage, which were defined by Adi Shankaracharya, include Puri, Rameswaram, Dwarka and Badrinath. Hindus consider it a great fortune to visit the Char Dham during their lifetime. Till the mid- 20th century, other pilgrimage sites in the Indian State of Uttarakhand, namely, Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath, were known as Chota Char Dham. But not, these sites have also been referred to as the Char Dham. The Creation of the Char Dham The Four Shankaracharya Peeths at the Char Dham school of Hinduism gave rise to at least four Hindu Mathas or monastic establishments. The great saint/seer organized the monks under the four Mathas, headquartered at Jagannatha Puri (in the East), Sringeri Sharada Peetham (in the South), Dwarka (in the West) and Badrikashrama (in the North). Each one of these Peethams was headed by one of the shishyas, who oversaw the entire functioning of his respective Matha. Let us now look at each of these temples in detail: The Puri Jagannath Temple Puri Dham Temple Puri is located in the Eastern side of India, in the state of Odisha. Puri is one of the most ancient cities in the East and is situated along the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Puri is the site of the Govardhana Matha. The main temple is about 1000 years old and was constructed in the 12th century by Raja Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva.

Many Hindus believe that they are important in attaining salvation. By prayerfully focusing on them, we are strategically covering spiritually important locations in each of the four directions: Puri on the east coast, Rameshwaram in the south, Dwarka on the west coast, and Badrinath in the north. • Char Dham Board Verdict and Regulation of Temples
Char Dham Board Verdict and Regulation of Temples August 4, 2020 The Uttarakhand High Court upheld the constitutionality of the Uttarakhand Char Dham Devasthanam Management Board Act, 2019. The Uttarakhand law takes control of four of the most sacred places in the State including Kedarnath and Badrinath, which was challenged by MP and former Minister Subramanian Swamy. Char Dham Board Verdict Religious reforms have faced certain resistance. Thus the Sabrimala judgment (2018) saw huge public protests similar to those after the Shah Bano judgment (1985). However, interestingly even Manu’s code provided that priests do not have the absolute right in temple management; instead, kings (state) in ancient India had a vital say in temple management. Even Kedarnath and Badrinath were under state management as prescribed by the Shri Badrinath and Kedarnath Temples Act, 1939. The newly enacted law merely replaced this Act. The Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court and the Bench in its 129 page order not only cited 144 judgments but also examined all issues connected with the violation of religious rights of Hindus in temple management. Other Laws Upheld by Judiciary The Shri Jagannath Temple Act was upheld by the Supreme Court of India in Raja Birakishore vs The State Of Orissa (1964). The Nathdwara Temple Act in Tilkayat Shri Govindlalji Maharaj vs The State Of Rajasthan And Others (1963) The Tirupati Balaji law in Shri A.S. Narayana Deekshitulu vs State Of Andhra Pradesh & Ors (1996) The Uttar Pradesh Sri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Act in Sri Adi Vishweshwara Of Kashi vs State Of U.P.
