Summary GiveWell and Good Ventures spoke with members of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) malaria team about gaps in global malaria funding, BMGF’s strategy and projected timeline for malaria eradication, and other BMGF malaria activities. Gaps in global malaria funding GiveWell and Good Ventures asked the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) malaria team whether there is a need for funding of better data on bed net durability and bed net usage. There is not as much knowledge and data about bed net usage and bed net durability as there should be. A potential source of variability in bed net durability is that, currently, there are no globally established criteria for measuring the durability of bed nets, so it is possible that net durability standards differ between producers. The Results for Development Institute (R4D) is doing very good work on studying bed net durability. -

What was the intended audience for this document? How do you know this? This essay was originally published in the North American Review in 1889. Although limited in subscriptions (3,000 total), the North American Review was one of the foremost literary magazines in New England from its founding in 1815 throughout the early part of the century until Atlantic Monthly was created. Its content focused on improving society and elevating culture. The original audience for this document was probably the well-educated and wealthier section of society. 3. Summarize in 1-2 sentences the main idea of the document: In the document Carnegie argues/defends the beneficial state of capitalism and offers three possibilities for the distribution of wealth: inheritance, money bequeathed for public purposes, or money administered by the owner while he/she is still living. In the end, Carnegie negates the first two options and explains the duty of the wealthy to administer excess funds in a way best suited for the entire community (to help the poor help themselves). 4. Toussaint* ABSTRACT Since Andrew Carnegie penned his famous Gospel of Wealth in 1889, corporate philanthropists have championed considerable public good around the world, investing in a wide range of social programs addressing a diversity of public issues, from poverty to healthcare to criminal justice. Nevertheless, the problem of “the Rich and the Poor,” as termed by Andrew Carnegie in his famous essay, remains unsolved. Socially conscious investors have recently called for America to reimagine a new “gospel of wealth”, one that not only grapples with the what of social injustice, but also explores the how and the why of systemic social and economic inequality. An emerging social finance tool, the social impact bond (“SIB”), has been praised as a promising platform that can help solve many of our social challenges by targeting impact investments toward traditionally underfunded social welfare programs. Million Dollar List – Scaling Philanthropy Methodology and Summary Statistics Una Osili Indiana University School of Philanthropy [email protected] School of Philanthropy Research Project Team: Jason Ward Sindhu Raghavan Reema Bhakta Michael Copple Elizabeth Farris Shannon Neumeyer Cynthia Hyatte Abstract This paper provides an explanation of the methodology behind the Million Dollar List, a unique dataset providing gift-level data on million dollar-plus charitable donations. It further provides summary statistics based on data between 2000 and 2010. Initial research into the MDL has produced a number of noteworthy findings. Million dollar giving by individuals tends to be greater on a gift-to-gift basis than that of foundations and corporations. We also find that gifts to higher education institutions dominate the number of gifts received, but these gifts tend to be relatively small as a fraction of total dollars given on the MDL. There are significant differences in per capita giving and receiving by state, due in large part to the geographic dispersion of large foundations and nonprofits. There are numerous opportunities for future studies using the MDL data, including detailed investigations into donor networks, gift dispersion based on source of donor wealth, and a study of institutional characteristics that attract million dollar plus gifts. 1 Indiana University School of Philanthropy Every culture depends on philanthropy and nonprofit organizations to provide essential elements of a civil society. Five years after they signed the Giving Pledge, the youngest on the list of billionaires promising to donate half of their wealth, the couple is embarking on what will start at double-digit millions of dollars in giving to an eclectic range of causes, from overhauling the criminal-justice system to minimizing the potential risks from advanced artificial intelligence. To figure out where to give, they created the Open Philanthropy Project, which uses academic research, among other things, to identify high-poten- tial, overlooked funding opportunities. Ms. Tuna, a former Wall Street Journal reporter, hopes the approach will influence other wealthy donors in Silicon The youngest Valley and beyond who, like her, seek the biggest possible returns for their philanthropic dollars. Already, a co-founder of Instagram and his spouse have made a $750,000 signers of the commitment to support the project. Applying a simple theoretical framework to two longitudinal experiments with actual charitable donations, we show that moral contradictions become the source of a new kind of time inconsistency linked to a demand for flexibility, rather than the more typical demand for commitment. This kind of time inconsistency coexists with the opposite of kind of time inconsistency arising from temptation to give, which is exhibited by a substantial minority of individuals. -
