    Captains of Industry? Or Robber Barons? Overview: The thirty years plus, following the end of the Civil War, is often referred to as the “Gilded Age”. This was a term coined by Mark Twain, the most renowned American writer of the period. It refers to a superficial period of intense economic growth. During this time, businessmen created large business organizations known as trusts. The ingenuity of these entrepreneurs earned the titles of “Captains of Industry”. Yet, their ruthlessness in building wealth at the expense of their competitors, workers and consumers often earned them the title “Robber Baron”. This DBQ (Document Based Questions) asks you to decide whether these businessmen were “Captains of Industry” or “Robber Barons”. Background Essay During the post-Civil War period, an era commonly referred to as the Gilded Age, the economy of the United States grew at a fantastic rate. With the exception of a recession during the mid-1870s, and another during the mid-1890s, the economic growth was in unprecedented in United States history. Manufacturing output increased by 180 percent. Railroads, an important catalyst of growth, increased in miles by 113 percent. Steel production grew to over 10,000,000 tons per year by 1900. Every aspect of the American economy expanded from traditional activities to new enterprises brought about by the huge influx of cutting-edge technological inventions. The gross national product almost doubled during the period and the per capital GNP increased by 35 percent. Wages matured by 20 percent, and a new American middle class emerged for the first time in the history of the United States.

Also a noted philanthropist, Carnegie gave away some $350 million mostly to build public libraries and endow universities. In "Wealth" how does Carnegie depict the wealthy and the responsibilities of being wealthy? How does he depict the poor, and charity for the poor? Why?     The Scottish-born industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie (1835–1919) was one of the titans of America’s Gilded Age. He was also a prolific author, writing hundreds of speeches, articles, pamphlets, and letters to the editor, as well as seven books, including an Autobiography (published posthumously in 1920). Proud of his pen, Carnegie is today perhaps most celebrated as the author of a pair of articles first published in 1889, which together have come to be known as The Gospel of Wealth. Here, Carnegie boldly articulated his view of the rich as mere trustees of their wealth who should live unostentatiously, provide moderately for their families, and use their fortunes to promote the “general good.” He goes on to suggest some “best uses” to which the millionaire can devote his wealth (universities, libraries, medical institutions, public parks, and more).     A “Gospel of Wealth” for the 21st Century By John Fullerton John Fullerton, Founder of the Capital Institute, says it’s time to update Andrew Carnegie’s “Gospel of Wealth” with a new perspective grounded in 21st century realities that the great philanthropist did not foresee--an interdependent world that rejects ever expanding wealth inequality, and a planet where the economic system is breaching the boundaries of the biosphere. Andrew Carnegie once wrote that there is nothing more debasing than the worship of money: “The amassing of wealth is one of the worst species of idolatry.” Later in life, Carnegie developed this notion more fully in “Gospel of Wealth.” Published in 1901, this essay became a touchstone of the great American philanthropic tradition. Carnegie’s position on the “duty of the man of Wealth” is quite clear: First, to set an example of modest, unostentatious living…to provide moderately for the legitimate wants of those dependent upon him; after doing so to consider all surplus revenues which come to him simply as trust funds, which he is called upon... and strictly bound as a matter of duty to administer in the manner which, in his judgment, is best calculated to produce the most beneficial results for the community…bringing to (the poor) his superior wisdom…doing for them better than they would or could do for themselves. His condescending tone notwithstanding, it’s hard to argue with Carnegie’s expressed intention, which also called for an aggressive estate tax. I suspect Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have read this essay, based on their centralized and self-administered (or, in Buffett’s case, delegated to Gates) approach to philanthropy.

Although they operate in different time periods and among different main social concerns, the early actions of both the Carnegie Foundation and the Gates Foundation have approached grant-making in fundamentally similar ways to change American education.
