"Tea" also refers to the aromatic beverage prepared from the cured leaves by combination with hot or boiling water,[1] and is the common name for the Camellia sinensis plant itself. After water, tea is the most widely-consumed beverage in the world.[2] It has a cooling, slightly bitter, astringent flavour which many enjoy.[3] The four types of tea most commonly found on the market are black tea, oolong tea, green tea and white tea,[4] all of which can be made from the same bushes, processed differently, and in the case of fine white tea grown differently. Tea Overview Tea-a beverage made by steeping processed leaves, buds, or twigs of the tea bush (Camellia sinensis) in hot water for a few minutes Tea is the most widely-consumed beverage after water. It has a cooling, slightly bitter, astringent #avour. The !ve types of tea most commonly found on the market are black tea, oolong tea, green tea, white tea, and pu-erh tea. Tea Culture Tea culture is de!ned by the way tea is made and consumed, by the way the people interact with tea, and by the aesthetics surrounding tea drinking. Tea is commonly drunk at social events, and many cultures have created intricate formal ceremonies for these events. Western examples of these are afternoon tea and the tea party. In the east, tea ceremonies di"er among countries, Japan's complex, formal and serene one being the most known. Other examples are the Korean tea ceremony or some traditional ways of brewing tea in Chinese tea culture. Unique customs also exist in Tibet, where tea is commonly brewed with salt and butter, or in the Middle East and Africa where tea plays an important role in many countries. The British empire spread its own interpretation of tea to its colonies, including places like Hong Kong, or Pakistan which had existing tea customs. Di"erent regions also favor di"erent varieties of tea, black, green, or oolong, and use di"erent #avourings, such as milk, sugar or herbs. The temperature and strength of the tea likewise varies widely. Tea Preparation The traditional method of making a cup of tea is to place loose tea leaves, either directly, or in a tea infuser, into a tea pot or teacup and pour hot water over the leaves. -

Starting from the early morning we take tea. Tea acts as a stimulant for Central Nervous System, (CNS) and skeletal muscles. That is why tea removes fatigue, tiredness and headache. It also increases the capacity of thinking; it is used in lowering of body temperature. Moreover tea drinking has recently proven to be associated with cell - mediated immune function of the human body. Tea plays an important role in providing immunity against intestinal disorders and in protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage. Tea also prevents dental caries due to the presence of fluoride. The role of tea is well established in normalizing blood pressure, lipid depressing activity, prevention of coronary heart diseases and diabetes by reducing the blood - glucose activity. Both green and black tea infusions contain a number of antioxidants, mainly catechins that have anti - carcinogenic, anti - mutagenic and anti - turmeric properties. Today, tea forms an integral part of the modern healthy lifestyle, which comprises a balanced diet, combined with regular exercise routine. Extensive research and studies have revealed that tea is one of the richest sources of antioxidants. These antioxidants, as scientists agree, are found in tea in the form of poly phenols. -

Rafter* Department of Medical Nutrition, Karolinska Institutet, NOVUM, S-141 86 Huddinge, Sweden , on 28 Sep 2021 at 17:09:02 One of the most promising areas for the development of functional foods lies in modification of the activity of the gastrointestinal tract by use of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics. While a myriad of healthful effects have been attributed to the probiotic lactic acid bacteria, perhaps the most controversial remains that of anticancer activity. However, it must be emphasised that, to date, there is no direct experimental evidence for cancer suppression in man as a result of con- , subject to the Cambridge Core terms of use, available at sumption of lactic cultures in fermented or unfermented dairy products, although there is a wealth of indirect evidence, based largely on laboratory studies. Presently, there are a large number of biomarkers available for assessing colon cancer risk in dietary intervention studies, which are validated to varying degrees. These include colonic mucosal markers, faecal water markers and immunological markers. Overwhelming evidence from epidemiological, in vivo, in vitro and clinical trial data indicates that a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of chronic disease, particularly cancer. It is now clear that there are components in a plant-based diet other than traditional nutrients that can reduce cancer risk. -

Japanese and Chinese people have been drinking tea for centuries and in Asia, it is the most consumed beverage besides water. It is a rich source of pharmacologically active molecules which have been implicated to provide diverse health benefits. The three major forms of tea are green, black and oolong tea based on the degree of fermentation. The composition of tea differs with the species, season, leaves, climate, and horticultural practices. Polyphenols are the major active compounds present in teas. The catechins are the major polyphenolic compounds in green tea, which include epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin, epicatechin-3-gallate and epicatechin, gallocatechins and gallocatechin gallate. EGCG is the predominant and most studied catechin in green tea. There are numerous evidences from cell culture and animal studies that tea polyphenols have beneficial effects against several pathological diseases including cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. The polyphenolic compounds present in black tea include theaflavins and thearubigins. In this review article, we will summarize recent studies documenting the role of tea polyphenols in the prevention of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and neurological diseases.
