The phenomenon of Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North in Gateshead (completed in 1998) created a wave of aspiration for the North East. In South Tyneside, outstanding figurative sculptures by Juan Munoz and Irene Brown were realised as part of a longer term Arts Council lottery funded project called Art on the Riverside. Our ambition for Art on the Riverside was that in facilitating a series of both artists’ commissions and artists’ residencies, the people of the region would be reconnected to the rivers Tyne and Wear. When we first conceived the artist’s brief and then shortlisted artists for a site in Hebburn, our goal was to find a way of celebrating the local electrical engineering company Reyrolles, who have been a significant national innovator and a local employer for over 100 years. When artist Charles Quick won the commission and made his way through the initial design process, it was interesting to see the change in mindset of the local councillors and business people involved in the process, who had initially expected an artwork in the form of a statue. They selected a proposal for an interactive artwork using light – quite a remarkable decision, but one that recognised the need to celebrate the electrical wonders at Reyrolle. This entailed making something different, which the community could engage with, and to create a special place of the Riverside Park between the shipyards and engineering works – quite a challenge for one artwork! The actual selection of the design proposal for FLASH took all of 45 minutes. The design development, community consultation, planning, airtraffic control, wildlife, and other permissions, made the whole process a long journey. Yet instead of eroding the vision and wearing the artist down, the difficult work of design and negotiation over the seven and half years became a vital process. More people became involved, more people began to understand and be inspired, and eventually FLASH became a project that simply had to happen. It is fascinating that an artist can engage multiple community groups in helping to create a rather minimal and challenging conceptual artwork. It is an even harder job to make something that teenagers have fun with, and something which the older members of the Hebburn community recognise as a technological celebration of their work and a rich industrial past. It is funded through the Arts Council’s Creative People and Places Fund. Objectives The objectives of the PR campaign around the Cultural Spring were to: • Raise the profile of The Cultural Spring locally, regionally and nationally • Increase the number of people attending Cultural Spring events through publicity generated • Brief local and regional news outlets/journalists to win media buy-in of the project’s aims • Work with the Cultural Spring team to create an agreed narrative that would help shape PR output • Help shift attitudes towards the arts in our communities – the arts is not just for ‘them’ • Positive PR could also help attract higher-profile artists and possibly help longevity through legacy funders • Tackle any negative publicity should it arise (it hasn’t to date!) • Raise the profile of the individuals and groups we’re working with. Target audiences Local audience Locally, we targeted people living within our wards in Sunderland and South Tyneside, plus other Wearsiders and South Tynesiders who don’t live in the wards, but might attend events or activities. We also targeted a wider audience of north- easterners who might want to attend the larger Cultural Spring events, like the Great North Passion (our launch event organised in collaboration with BBC, and broadcast live on Good Friday on BBC One).

In this task, I am grateful for the CWGC permitting us to use their images and to Jade Atkinson. ✓ The Tewkesbury Register (the ancestor of the “Echo”) which is patiently researched by the late David Willavoys. We are also very grateful to John Pocock who has patiently transcribed information researched by David. We have used photographs taken with a digital camera, but the quality is inevitably variable. ✓ Sam Eedle for his superb cover design. ✓ Those families who have responded to press appeals for more information. An exhibition was mounted at the Tewkesbury Library between 9 and 21 July 2005 and we learned more information about individuals as a result of this exercise.3 There are two major innovations in commemorating the war dead of this War: ✓ Service women who lost their lives are included unlike in WWI ✓ One civilian, who lost his life in a Flying Bomb attack, is included There are, however, inconsistencies and we hope that, as a result of this exercise, those names omitted from the Memorials will be included, even though the gesture would be 60 years late.

Chart the performance of children eligible for free school meals — the standard measure of deprivation — compared with other pupils. Strip out “equivalent” courses such as BTECs, which are offered as an alternative to GCSEs to enable parents to assess school GCSE performance with and without equivalent exams. In addition, the data will also show schools performance in the Ebacc. Writing in the Telegraph on Saturday, Schools Minister Nick Gibb said: “We are determined to stamp out any incentives to “game” the system whereby some schools focus just on those pupils who will affect their league table position. It is vital that all schools give every pupil the best chance to maximise their potential. " Gibb criticised schools for focusing on borderline pupils at the expense of high and lower achieving pupils and accuses some schools of entering pupils for qualifications more in the “interests of a school’s league table position than the child’s own prospects”.

In his recent visit and during the flights to and from India and Nepal, Lord Mountbatten wrote his reminiscences as a Communicator. The majority of his article was then typed by the Prince of Wales’ Staff in his aeroplane. We are therefore especially grateful to Lord Mountbatten, for having been so unstinting in bis time and effort and letting us share with him some of his communication memories.
