Corresponding author: Y. Ouagajjou, [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract. The local clam Ruditapes decussatus has been a widespread bivalve along the natural beds in Dakhla Bay (Morocco). But, nowadays its overexploitation during many years has prompted the depletion of its occurrence in many extents and also has limited the availability of natural spat. In this study, the influence of nutrition on spawning, fertilization and larvae rearing was assessed for the first time. The potential of oocytes accumulation and release was highly influenced by the quality of microalgae combination (F = 20.7, p < 0.001) rather than their availability (F = 4.092, p < 0.05). Nevertheless, the eggs fertilization was also significantly affected by diet and ration respectively (F = 7.347, p < 0.01 and F = 4.645, p < 0.05). For larvae rearing, as regards to physiological responses, small size strains Isochrysis galbana and Pavlova lutheri are the most suitable regimen during early larvae phase, while diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans and large size strain Tetraselmis chui are more appropriate during late larvae phase. Therefore, the mixture of the four microalgae was the only diet that led to metamorphosis and settlement throughout this experiment. -

Ao final inclúese unha listaxe de referencias bibliográficas que foron utilizadas para a elaboración do presente documento. Nalgunhas desas referencias recolléronse ou propuxéronse nomes galegos para os moluscos, quer xenéricos quer específicos. Outras referencias achegan nomes para os moluscos noutras linguas, que tamén foron tidos en conta. Snails were kept in self-cleaning housing chambers in an artificially con- trolled environment. Mating was frequent under long days (18 h light) and rare under short days (8 h light) regardless of whether the snails were kept at 15\s=deg\Cor 20\s=deg\C.An interaction between photoperiod and temperature was observed for egg laying. The number of eggs laid (45\p=n-\50/snail)and the frequency of egg laying (90\p=n-\130%)were greater in long than in short days (16\p=n-\35/snailand 27\p=n-\77%)but a temperature of 20\s=deg\C redressed, to some extent, the inhibitory effect of short days. At both temperatures only long photoperiods brought about cyclic reproduction over a period of 16 weeks, con- firming the synchronizing role of photoperiod on the neuroendocrine control of egg laying in this species of snail. Keywords: edible snail; mating; egg laying; photoperiod; temperature Introduction The effects of photoperiod and temperature, which influence most reproductive cycles of animals of temperate regions, have given rise to a certain number of observations for pulmonate gastropods. In basommatophorans, the influence of photoperiod and temperature on reproduction has been shown in four species of lymnaeids and planorbids (Imhof, 1973), in Melampus (Price, 1979), in Lymnaea stagnalis (Bohlken & Joosse, 1982; Dogterom et ai, 1984; Joosse, 1984) and in Bulinus truncatus (Bayomy & Joosse, 1987). -

The mariculture industry in China has obtained break through in the all artificial nursery and cultural technique of shrimps, mollusca and fishes of high commercial value since 1950s, which has advanced the development of mariculture industry. The first major development was seaweed culture during 1950s, prompted by breakthroughs in breeding technology. By the end of the 1970s, annual seaweed production reached 250,000 metric tons in dry weight ( approximately 1.5million tons of fresh seaweed ). Shrimp culture developed during the 1980s because of advances in hatchery technology and economic reform policies. Annual shrimp production reached 210,000 tons in 1992. Disease outbreaks since 1993, however, have reduced shrimp production by about two-thirds. Mariculture production increased steadily between 1954 and 1985, but has been exponential since 1986, mostly driven by molluscan culture. Molluscan 1 culture in China began to expand beyond the four traditional species: oyster,cockle,razor clam and ruditapes clam in the 1970s,Mussel culture was the first new industry to emerge ,followed by scallop aquaculture in 1980s. Abalone culture has become a major industry in 1990s. Traditional oyster and clam cultures have also advanced and expanded in recent years.Now more than 30 species of marine mollusks are cultured commercially in China. Because of the rapid development in recent years, molluscan culture has become the largest sector of the Chinese mariculture industry, accounting for 81% of the total production in weight. -
Pathogens and Parasites of the Mussels Mytilus Galloprovincialis and Perna Canaliculus: Assessment of the Threats Faced by New Zealand Aquaculture
Pathogens and Parasites of the Mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis and Perna canaliculus: Assessment of the Threats Faced by New Zealand Aquaculture Cawthron Report No. 1334 December 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The literature on pathogens and parasites of the mytilid genera Mytilus and Perna was surveyed with particular focus on M. galloprovincialis and P. canaliculus. Likely pathological threats posed to New Zealand mussel aquaculture were identified and recommendations were discussed under the following topics. Epidemiological differences between New Zealand Mytilus and Perna There is a paucity of data for this comparison. Comparability or otherwise would inform predictions as to the threat posed by overseas Mytilus parasites to New Zealand Perna and vice versa. Samples of P. canaliculus and M. galloprovincialis should be surveyed to establish any significant difference in parasite loads or pathology. Invasive dynamics and possible development of pathological threat The greatest potential threat to New Zealand Perna canaliculus aquaculture appears to be posed by parasites introduced by invading Mytilus species. These common ship-borne fouling organisms are a likely source of overseas pathogens, the most important of which are probably Marteilia spp. and disseminated haemic neoplasia. Hybridisation of invasive and local mussels presents a further potential pathology hazard by production of a more susceptible reservoir host thus giving the potential for production of more infected hosts and greater water load of transmission stages. Such an increase in transmission stages might be a cause of concern for Perna canaliculus whose susceptibility is currently unknown. Studies on Marteilia and haemic neoplasia are required to address the following questions: Is Perna canaliculus susceptible to either of these pathogens? What are the current prevalences of these pathogens in local mytilids? What species of mussels are entering New Zealand waters? Do they include Mytilus spp. -

Spermatogonia show round nuclei with patchy heterochromatin. The primary spermatocytes are characterized by the presence of synaptonemal complexes. The secondary spermatocytes are reduced in size and contain less cytoplasm and clustered stacks of Golgian cisternae with small proacrosomal vesicles lying close to them. During spermiogenesis, electron-dense plaques develop at both the future anterior and posterior poles of the nuclear surface. These plaques determine the apparent antero-posterior axis of the spermatid, the distal plaque indicates the future anterior part of the cell and the basal one the posterior part where an abundant number of mitochondria are aggregated. The mature spermatozoon shows the characteristic sperm features: an acrosomal vesicle supported by an acrosomal pedestal; a helically keeled nucleus, a neck region and a complex elongate middle piece featuring paracrystalline and matrix layers sheathing the axoneme, coarse fibers and glycogen helices. Some marine peptides or their derivatives have high commercial values and had reached the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical markets. A large number of them are already in different phases of the clinical and preclinical pipeline. This review highlights the recent research in marine peptides and the trends and prospects for the future, with special emphasis on nutraceutical and pharmaceutical development into marketed products.
