LEILA DA COSTA FERREIRA) Campinas 2014 iii iv v vi RESUMO Transformações biofísicas nos solos, nos oceanos e na atmosfera, provocadas por atividades humanas e processos naturais, têm aumentado consideravelmente desde o início do século XX. Estas transformações e mudanças na estrutura e função de sistemas socioecológicos podem ser percebidas por populações humanas. As comunidades de pescadores artesanais de Ubatuba, estado de São Paulo, Brasil, que ainda vivem diretamente dos recursos pesqueiros percebem tais mudanças e têm se adaptado a elas ao longo do tempo, a fim de manter suas subsistências e renda. O conhecimento ecológico local (CEL) a respeito dos sistemas socioecológicos costeiros destas comunidades pode auxiliar na redução da vulnerabilidade e aumento da capacidade adaptativa, em face de mudanças ambientais globais. Este estudo visa contribuir com informações sobre as mudanças ambientais globais, incluindo as mudanças climáticas, bem como seus impactos sobre o ambiente local e as populações humanas, e verificar como populações de pescadores artesanais do litoral norte de São Paulo percebem e se adaptam a tais mudanças. A hipótese considerada neste estudo consiste em que o CEL de pescadores artesanais com relação ao ambiente natural é utilizado para reduzir a vulnerabilidade e aumentar a capacidade adaptativa de comunidades de pesca artesanal costeira frente às mudanças ambientais globais, dentre elas as mudanças climáticas. Os resultados apontam que as comunidades pesqueiras do litoral norte de São Paulo fazem uso do CEL para entender os efeitos das mudanças ambientais nos ecossistemas costeiros, assim como têm capacidade de se adaptarem a tais mudanças ao longo do tempo, diminuindo a vulnerabilidade de sistemas socioecológicos costeiros frente às mudanças ambientais globais. A análise em nível local da percepção de mudanças ambientais e sociais por populações humanas subsidia o entendimento dos efeitos dessas mudanças em ecossistemas complexos e este entendimento pode contribuir para futuros planos de manejo em áreas costeiras brasileiras. Palavras-chave: Conhecimento Ecológico Local (CEL), vulnerabilidade, adaptação, capacidade adaptativa, mudanças ambientais globais vii viii ABSTRACT Biophysical transformations on land, in the oceans and in the atmosphere, provoked by human activities and natural processes have increased considerably since the beginning of twentieth century. These changes, which affect the structure and function of coupled socio-ecological systems, are being observed by human society. Coastal fisheries communities of Ubatuba, São Paulo state, Brazil, highly dependent upon fisheries observe such changes and have adapted to them over time in order to maintain communities, livelihood activities and income. The detailed local ecological knowledge (LEK) of these communities regarding coastal socio-ecological systems can help reducing the vulnerability and increasing the adaptive capacity, in the face of global environmental change. This study contributes with knowledge global environmental change, the impacts on the local environment and human beings and how the communities realize and adapt to these changes. The hypothesis driving study is that LEK of the coastal fishers about the natural environment contributes to reduce vulnerability and to increase adaptive capacity in the small-scale coastal fisheries in the face of global environmental change, including climate change. The findings show that the small- scale coastal fishers of North coast of São Paulo make use of LEK for understanding the effects of the environmental change on the coastal ecosystems as well as how they can adapt to such changes over time, thereby reducing the vulnerability of coastal socio-ecological systems in face of global environmental change. An analytical insight into the local level regarding the perceptions of environmental and social change are essential to provide a better understanding about the effects of diverse changes in the complex ecosystems. Such understanding can contribute to future design of resources management in Brazilian coastal areas.     Creating New Animated TV Series for Girls Aged 6-12 in Britain Lindsay Watson This article focuses on the development and marketing of animated female lead charac- ters on television for an audience of girls aged 6-12 in Britain. Using strategic marketing theory it asks the questions: “What do girls want (to see on screen)?” “How do they get it?” and “How do we (the animation industry) sell it?” The paper reviews 87 starring fe- male lead characters worldwide and finds that most are: 2D in design, feature characters with American accents, have a cast of either group or independent characters and are of either a ‘dramatic’ or ‘dramatic/comedic’ genre. The article concludes that the types of television shows girls are watching could be improved to better meet their needs. It encourages content creators to be brave and test new ideas and offers practical tips to executives, producers and commissioners on development and positioning of new ani- mated television series that will engage their audiences. Personal Preface As an animation producer, academic, and campaigner for indie animation and women’s rights I decided in 2013 that I wanted to answer the question: Why aren’t there more animated female characters on British children’s TV? That year also happened to be the year I launched Animated Women UK – since then a lot has changed! The 1980s was a great time for empowered animated female leads in TV series as merchandisers recognised audience buying power (Perea, 2014). This didn’t translate to the big screen as from 1995 to 2012 most of Pixar’s films featured male leads.

    Public Relations Journal Vol. 5, No. 2, Spring 2011 ISSN 1942-4604 © 2011 Public Relations Society of America Classroom to Boardroom: The Role of Gender in Leadership Style, Stereotypes and Aptitude for Command in Public Relations Victoria Geyer-Semple This study uses scholarly literature grounded in organizational communication theory, feminist perspectives and gender theory on the public relations industry to provide a theoretical framework for primary research conducted on both undergraduate public relations majors and public relations practitioners. Results from primary research (interviews with undergraduate students and a survey administered to public relations practitioners) reveals parallels and disconnects between student expectations and professional realities of the role gender plays in the public relations discipline. To help foster diversity and reduce gendered stereotypes within undergraduate public relations programs and the public relations industry fresh, pedagogical recommendations are explored. Cameron, Lariscy, and Sweep (1992) found that education influences the way public relations is practiced. Thus, with pedagogical changes at the undergraduate level, there is hope for a rebalance of equal gender distribution for female practitioners at all professional levels, as well the capacity to provide more comprehensive and accurate images of the discipline. LITERATURE REVIEW According to a report from Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, between the years of 1994 and 1995 there were over 10,000 U.S. students majoring in public relations (Benigni, Weaver-Lariscy & Tinkham, 2002). In the fall of 2006, more than 15,000 undergraduate students were majoring in public relations (Becker, Vlad & McLean, 2007). While there has been an increase in students studying the discipline, the industry also continues to grow.

Likewise, theories of animation often foreground its disruptive potential. Taking an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses girlhood studies, animation studies, and screen studies, this article analyses the representation of the two main girl characters, Tina and Louise Belcher, in the animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers (2011–present). Taking this concept of mutability as its central focus, it argues that animation is an ideal medium for representing girlhood, given its disruptive potential and non-linear capacities, whereby characters are often frozen in time. With no commitment to aging its young female characters, Bob’s Burgers is instead able to construct a landscape of girlhood that allows for endless reversal, contradiction and overlap in the experiences of Tina and Louise, whose existence as animations reveals girlhood as a liminal space in which girls can be one thing and the other – gullible and intelligent, vulnerable and strong, sexual and innocent – without negating their multifarious experiences.

    Title: At the intersection of idealized youth and marginalized almost-adulthood: how girls negotiate young motherhood in London, Ontario. Patricia Hamilton, Erica Lawson, Crystal Gaudet, Jennifer Chisholm, Jaspreet Kaur, Susan Abercromby Abstract This article discusses how young mothers in London, a mid-size city in Canada, utilize a drop-in centre service while attending an alternative program to acquire secondary school credits. The central arguments made here are informed by key concepts in the field of girlhood studies. With its attention to the interconnections between gender, age, and generation as well as other aspects of social identity, girlhood studies provides crucial insight into the lived experiences of young mothers who straddle the space between girlhood and adulthood. We interpret the experiences of the young mothers who participated in this study in light of shifting meanings and expectations of girls and girlhood in the neoliberal era (Harris 2004; Gonick 2006; McRobbie 2000). Drawing on the concept of the ideal neoliberal girl subject embodied in the “can do” and “at risk” girl (Harris 2004), this paper highlights the tensions in accessing a drop-in centre, which functions as both a site of security and surveillance, for a group of young mothers receiving social services. The findings revealed how girls who are mothers struggle to live in the present to assert a legitimate maternal identity even as they are prepared for the future through neoliberal public policies and other disciplinary practices. Hodel certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: SECRET SUPERSTARS AND OTHERWORLDLY WIZARDS: Gender Biased Hiding of Extraordinary Abilities in Girl-Powered Disney Channel Sitcoms from the 2000s Chair: Germaine Halegoua, Ph.D. Date Approved: 25 January 2017 ii ABSTRACT Conformity messaging and subversive practices potentially harmful to healthy models of feminine identity are critical interpretations of the differential depiction of the hiding and usage of tween girl characters’ extraordinary abilities (e.g., super/magical abilities and celebrity powers) in Disney Channel television sitcoms from 2001-2011. Male counterparts in similar programs aired by the same network openly displayed their extraordinariness and were portrayed as having considerable and usually uncontested agency. These alternative depictions of differential hiding and secrecy in sitcoms are far from speculative; these ideas were synthesized from analyses of sitcom episodes, commentary in magazine articles, and web-based discussions of these series. Content analysis, industrial analysis (including interviews with industry personnel), and critical discourse analysis utilizing the multi-faceted lens of feminist theory throughout is used in this study to demonstrate a unique decade in children’s programming about super powered girls.
