Mission Statement The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a forum for adults of all academic and economic backgrounds to learn about a wide variety of subjects they find interesting and engaging.

OLLI at ISU’s Purpose

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Indiana State University (OLLI at ISU) is a non-profit, membership organization open to all adults but geared towards individuals age 50 and older, regardless of academic background. At its center are learning programs designed by its members and tailored to suit their interests. These programs (lectures, courses, and special events) are offered without concern for grades, credits, or prerequisites. Indeed, the only requirement for membership in the Institute is a desire to learn.

The Institute emphasizes collaborative leadership and active member participation. The primary responsibilities for programs are assumed by Institute members, all of whom volunteer their time. However, it is only because of the substantial support of the Bernard Osher Foundation and Indiana State University that the Institute can offer these unique learning opportunities to residents of the Wabash Valley. The Osher Institute is also affiliated with the Road Scholar (Elderhostel Institute Network). OLLI Steering Committee 2013 - 2014 Patrick Harkins, Chairperson 2015

Page 4 WHAT MEMBERS SAY ABOUT OLLI!

Mary Jo Brown - The classes and trips I have enjoyed over the years since becoming a member of OLLI have been stimulating, challenging, and most of all, fun! From architectural tours to Shakespeare, glass blowing, history, wine tasting, intergenerational discussions, and dinners celebrating other cultures, the class choices for members continue to amaze and delight me. Not only are we learning new things, but we also meet and engage with new and interesting people. We have all of the fun and none of the angst with tests! OLLI enriches and adds zest to my life.

Michael Mueller - The thing I enjoy most about OLLI is, it helps me learn about things I didn't even know I would like to learn about. The programs are so diverse. One day I'm watching a great video featuring the Hubble telescope, another evening I'm learning why it is so difficult to convert tribal communities to a nation state in Afghanistan. Then I'm doing a mystery writers book discussion, or going to classes that were connected to the PBS series on Shakespeare's kings’ plays. Next I'm going to an Intergenerational Aging class, discussing with 20-year-old ISU students, what it is like to reach retirement age, and the outlook beyond. And don't forget the Hitchcock movie themes class or the watercolors painting class I took or the live discussion with the Smithsonian docent on American History through paintings. It never ends. The OLLI program at ISU has been a great, broadening experience for me.

Melody Brown - OLLI has been a fantastic addition to my life as an educational resource, social outlet and inspiration. I moved across the country to Terre Haute knowing only two family members here, leaving my friends, job and comfort zone. Various OLLI courses and lectures have introduced me to the Wabash Valley and Indiana. My passions of gardening, literature and art have been enhanced while new learnings have inspired me to explore topics of unknown areas. New friends met through the membership have been key to my successful transition. OLLI at ISU is a valued part of my life and a very important part of the Wabash Valley.

Bobbi McPeak - OLLI is a wonderful clearinghouse of everything vital to intellectual growth and stimulation in the Wabash Valley and beyond. Do yourself a favor, and become a member of this enthusiastic organization which just keeps hitting home runs, bringing its members consistently good programming across a wide range of interests.

Ruth Erickson - Let OLLI be your 'connector' to friends, events and new adventures. So much to do and so many new people to meet!!

Pat Creasey - OLLI serves many good purposes and I would encourage membership to everyone who wants to participate in exciting, encouraging, educational activities and happy times. It's my pleasure to be a part of OLLI. Even though I don't have time to attend many programs, OLLI membership ensures that there is always something on my calendar to provide pleasure, education and perhaps new friendships.

Chris Schellenberg - I retired in April and enjoy having more time to travel. Using my OLLI discount, I took advantage of a Photoshop class to enhance my travel pictures. I enjoy learning and OLLI gives me plenty of opportunities!

Pearl & Richard Kyrouac - OLLI gives you the opportunity to come together as a group and learn more about your community, its history through a variety of topics and programs from experts. It presents topics that are current and historical and at times exciting. You also get the opportunity to voice your opinion and ask questions at the sessions. Activities and trips are varied and encompass a variety of interests. Join the Conversations, Fun, and Learning with OLLI at ISU!! COURSES Page 12 Great World Religions With Discussion Coordinator Charles Fisher

Date/Time: Thursdays, June 12, 19, & 26, 2014 from 2 - 4 PM Place: ISU University Hall, Room 202 Cost: $15

Gain a deeper understanding of the world’s spiritual beliefs. Great World Religions will be a brief look at the five major faiths of the world. It is the beginning of a new series that will give an in-depth examination of each of these five major faiths of the world. We will look at two faiths per session by viewing brief DVD presentations from The Great Courses series and then have a discussion about the faiths. Discussions will be facilitated by Charles Fisher, retired social worker.

Christianity - This first lecture introduces Christianity by locating it among other world religions and providing basic facts: its number of adherents, their geographical distribution, the variety of lifestyles they follow, and the length and complexity of its history. Christianity is compared to other major religious traditions with respect to its founder, form of community, sacred texts, doctrine, ritual, moral code, and mysticism.

Buddhism - During its 2,500-year history, Buddhism has grown from a tiny religious community in northern India into a movement that now spans the globe. This lecture describes its influences, the ways it is not a religion, and its practitioners' ultimate goal.

Islam - The diversity of cultural and religious practices of Islam is reflected by the geographic expanse of the Muslim world. Islam's more than 1 billion followers live in 56 countries around the world, yet many in the West know little about it and are familiar only with the actions of a minority of radical extremists. This lecture outlines the second-largest and fastest-growing of the world's religions, which is part of the religious landscape of America and Europe, and has had a significant impact on world affairs.

Judaism - The goal of this course is to present Judaism as it is perceived by its adherents and practitioners. This opening lecture attempts a definition, or essence, of Judaism. The beliefs, practices, attitudes, and institutions of Jews through the ages evince a striking diversity, yet all would ascribe to a common heritage.

Hinduism - Reflection on the subject and the methods used to examine it are very important when one begins the study of Hinduism, a very old and complex religion. This inaugural lecture describes how Hinduism will be studied in this series. We examine the words "Hinduism," "religion," and "India," discussing why they are problematic yet useful for the study of our subject.

If you are registered for a program you will be notified by phone or e-mail about the rescheduled program date. If OLLI presentations are canceled, an email will be sent out and a notice will be on the Program Administrator’s voicemail at 812-237-2336. The easiest way to determine if your class or trip has been canceled is to call the OLLI offices at 812-237-2345. Campus closures are also announced by local media.

Program Cancellation Although highly unlikely, a program may be canceled due to under-enrollment or some other circumstance beyond the Institute’s control. Members will be notified of a cancellation and have the option of a credit to their account or a refund.

A cancellation must be made three days prior to the date of the program to receive a refund or credit. Trip cancellations must be made one week prior to a day-trip to receive a refund or credit. If we can fill your seat for a day-trip, you will receive a full credit. You will be charged for any program you have not cancelled in the stated time.

Page 46 OLLI AS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH?

Dear OLLI Members and Supporters,

One of the things that Sue and I appreciate about our OLLI membership is not only meeting and sharing with people we’ve known for years, but also with the new friends we’ve made through OLLI. Whether it’s a Wednesday presentation, a class or a tour, OLLI allows us to expand our horizons and meet new people. To be honest, OLLI has played a central role in my life since my retirement, and I hope it will continue to do so for a long, long time.

I know you’ve read of the need to “Support the Legacy of OLLI,” and that’s certainly the case. The Steering Committee has made every effort to keep OLLI’s annual membership fee as reasonable as possible. Quite frankly, when you take into account all that OLLI offers, it is the best deal in the Wabash Valley! Most of the time so-called “Legacy Giving” is a longer-term approach…remembering OLLI in your financial planning and wills. But there is a constant need for additional shorter-term support as well.

I am encouraging you to do what Sue and I have done, and include in your registration a donation to OLLI at ISU. It’s that simple. Your tax-deductible donation will help offset OLLI’s daily operational expenses. In short, support of OLLI beyond your annual membership allows us not only to maintain, but to grow as well!

You might be asking yourself, what does all of this have to do with OLLI being like the Fountain of Youth? Well, I have long believed the sage advice of Henry Ford who noted, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” So keep your mind young, support OLLI. Let your legacy be one not only of membership, invest in yourself and your/OLLI’s future…like Sue and I, you’ll be glad you did!
