“Come on, Gretchen. Keep up. You’re going to get lost,” my dad called out. That was my first mistake: visiting Times Square on a Saturday. It was like a large scale version of school hallways, but with more mosquitoes and a A letter from the team lot more giant ads.

“Okay, okay.” We had spent the entire day walking across Manhattan. At this point, I was spent. I was fatigued. I was drained. I was every synonym of tired you could think of. Jetlag was pulling at my eyelids, and my Hey Churchillians! overall well-being was equivalent to that of a raisin. My legs felt like cooked spaghetti, but I just sigh, half jogging, half-dragging myself Welcome to the November edition of the Churchill Chronicle! forward.

Anastasia brings her hands up to her throat. She barely has time to cry out in shock before the warm, crimson gold starts to run past her trembling hands and onto her dress. She stares for a moment, mesmerized the dark red mixing with the royal blue fabric, before she is brought to panic by the lack of air in her lungs. She inhales sharply, aspirating a wave of blood that coats her lungs, choking her from the inside and throwing her body into indescribable chaos. Her attacker side steps her with ease, her knife and dress still slick with her blood. A faint image of her registers in Anastasia's mind, the way the same blood interacts so differently with the same type of fabric. She glances up at the assailant, the same set of deep hazel eyes staring back at her as they lock gazes before her legs finally give out, forcing her to her knees.

Images flash in her mind of intricately decorated Queens, kneeling before the executioner's block in the very position she was in now. Long silky hair wrapped up neatly into white caps, manicured hands poised behind their backs, gold crosses dangling in the air for a brief moment before slumping down onto the stage. It’s strange how fitting these images are, how they have all met their end by the same driving force.

They’re almost enviable. Almost. Why else would people gather around for such a spectacle if not to see their paragon of royalty dethroned and disgraced? Afterall, it was them and their ambitions that brought this fate upon them, they are the only ones to blame.

Anastasia’s thoughts are derailed as she makes contact with the unforgiving pavement. She gawks in morbid fascination as the sidewalk laps up her blood, unrelenting and insatiable. Everything around her blurs and melts into colors and shades. She forces out a whisper, an ugly gurgling sound that is barely audible, although she is unaware if the sound even left her throat at all. She feels her entire body collapsing, the pool of blood finding its way up her eyes and clouding her vision until the only thing she sees is black tinted with red. She could feel her lungs drowning and she takes one last desperate breath before she once again feels the cold embrace of a knife.

RISE AND Moments. SHINE We have moments. Little snippets of time forever encapsulated in our memory. BY Tiny chests of images stored somewhere deep within the folds of our brain. So rare and treasured that such a moment could only be witnessed once. VAISHU A moment is filled with whatever you want it to be.

Laughter, anguish, ridicule or joy. KODURI You choose your moments.

You choose them wisely. I remember my first moment. I was young, maybe one or two. It was a little moment, perhaps because I, much like the moment, was very little. Yet it never fails to cheer me up, it never fails to put a smile on my face when I’m down. My first moment was the best moment of my life. Early in the morning, my mother walked into my room, and she sang, with the voice of a thousand angels in unison; “riiiSsEe aNd sHhInnE”

THETHE BENEFITS BENEFITS OF OF MODEL MODEL UN UN By Helen Ma Model United Nations, or Model UN, is a simulation of a United Nations committee targeted to help students thrive in areas such as international relations and diplomacy. On the weekend of October 18 - 19th, the first Model UN conference was held at Sir Winston Churchill High School, with more than 500 students attending from a wide array of Calgary’s high schools.

Model UN, according to its introductory video, is “all about cooperation and not competition.” It isn’t “a race to beat other people,” but rather more about “how well you can work with others.” Countries, or certain companies, are represented through delegates responsible for working with each other to solve a wide arrangement of Photo by Ethan Kwan problems. This goal must be met while still consistently sticking to one’s own values and virtues. Problems can include climate change, the refugee crisis, or even the idea of data sharing among foreign companies.

Gregory Wan, a new member of the club, stated that Model UN allowed him to practice both the crucial skills of multitasking and teamwork, “There were some times where it was extremely rushed. I found myself giving a speech, then writing a working paper, while also communicating with other delegates through writing notes.” Gregory then goes on to explain that the demanding nature of Model UN helped him “rely less on detailed, lengthy speeches, and more on the key points of [his] resolution.”

Model UN incorporates a balanced amount of self-research, team communication, and public speaking, to aid in providing a resolution for an actual global crisis. Through this, students are required to examine the issues that would occur as a result of each Photo by Jessica Chen possible solution, as well as forming alliances and coming to a definitive compromise.

“Model UN builds upon the same characteristics as Debate would. However, instead of delving deeper into one topic and working to perfect your speeches, Model UN requires a well-rounded amount of knowledge in a variety of topics, as well as the development of negotiation skills.” Gregory explained.

When asked to compare the two clubs, Gregory replied with, “I actually like debate a bit more, but Model UN is slightly more difficult based on the effort it takes to prepare. I enjoy how debate requires a deeper analysis of a subject, as opposed to MUN, which is more of a negotiation and solution building exercise.”

In Model UN, there is a wide assortment of students who join. Some students join because of their desire to enhance their speaking skills, a select amount sign up hoping for consistent CAS hours, while others enlist due to their own interest in global issues.

“The students who want to further advance their public speaking skills, as well as their charismatic attitude, should consider joining Model UN.” Gregory expressed, “If you enjoy debate, I’m sure you’ll enjoy MUN as well.”

Model UN altogether offers students a glance at serious issues that are happening globally, in addition to immersing students in a simulation of a real United Nations Committee. Many career opportunities are tied together with this simulation, and through the skills developed in this club, a student would find themselves flourishing in all humanities-related aspects of their lives.

The Churchill Chronicle Magazine 3 LIFE IS A JOURNEY HALEY KOTSIAS I’ve lived in this town my whole life and most of the time that’s been fine with me. But in late fall when the sky fills with birds migrating south for the winter, travelling thousands of miles, I get homesick for places I’ve never been to.

I hate to admit it, but at times I get jealous of those birds. Jealous of all the structures they’ve flown above, the consistent weather patterns they’ve flown through. Oh, what I’d do just to explore this beautiful earth and its components. Actually, scratch that. What I’d do just to be a bird, not having a care in the world other than being able to find food to feast on and keeping myself alive. But hey, those are already two things humans have to go through, so who says I can’t do it like a bird?

No doubt in my mind that the very first place I’d visit is the gorgeous island of Santorini, Greece. How mesmerizing would it be to observe the whitewashed houses and the beautiful sunsets, all from birds-eye view? Better yet, imagine flying over Niagara Falls, how hearing the spellbinding rush of the fast-flowing water, or to spectate the rainbow bridge that connects Niagara Falls, New York to Niagara Falls, Ontario. But there’s something else I’ve come to realize. Dreaming big is an important aspect of life, but is there such a thing as dreaming too big? Should we really be limiting our dreams just because they seem impossible? I think the real question is, how far are you willing to go in order to achieve those dreams? d Don't Die The Dea @andrew_the_human1444 SPOILER FREE REVIEW BY ANDREW WEI I have a soft spot for zombies. Whether that be the zombie-Christmas-musical ‘Anna Title: The Dead Don’t Die and the Apocalypse (8/10 rating) or my favourite tv show of all time iZombie (10/10 ’ Director: Jim Jarmusch rating), zombies hold a special place in my heart. So when a zom-com (Zombie- Starring: Bill Murray, Comedy) was announced with Kylo Ren, the Ancient One from Doctor Strange and Adam Driver, Tilda Selena Gomez all involved, I’m in. Swinton, Chloë Sevigny, Selena Gomez Run-time: 104 minutes There are lots of things to love about this movie, and there are certainly lots of Release Date: June 14, things to dislike. Starting with the upside: I found it tremendously funny. Although it 2019 may not be everyone s preferred form of comedy, Bill Murray and Adam Driver s MPA Ca Rating: 14A ’ ’ complete deadpan dialogue made the movie. Deadpan, not just a “haha funny” one- liner kind of deadpan, I mean deadpan more dead than all the zombies in this movie. Sometimes it may feel like a little much, but I just kept laughing whenever the ridiculous deadpan dialogue came up again. 7/10 Now the bad: lots of things that are set-up go nowhere. Conversations, actions, or entire subplots that add nothing to the film at all. In fact, you could probably trim out half of the characters in this movie and the ending would be exactly the same. Many things happen that have no need to be happening, all that it does is boost the runtime and cause expectations in the audience that amount to absolute nothingness. In my opinion: the bad is balanced out by the absurdity and the comedy, but that is most likely just my bias towards the zombie genre.

An incident that made international headlines on October 9th, 2019 involved a professional Hearthstone player, the controversy in Hong Kong and China, and Blizzard (the company that owns Hearthstone).

Now to understand the situation with Blizzard, a brief summary of the controversy in Hong Kong is needed. Hong Kong and China have a complicated political relationship - Hong Kong is technically a part of China, but operates as a special administrative region - this means they have their own laws, a high degree of autonomy, and no extradition law. But in the past few months, an extradition bill is looking to pass, sparking immense protests as the passing of this bill will make it seem as if China has control over Hong Kong, directly affecting their autonomy.

Blizzard is a multi-billion-dollar company, owning huge games such as Overwatch, World of Worldcraft, and Hearthstone. During a Hearthstone tournament, one of the participants known as “Blitzchung” made a statement in a post-match interview to support Hong Kong and its fight to protect its political system. This resulted in Blizzard suspending Blizchung from the game for a year, forcing him to give up any prize money received, and firing the casters who conducted the interview.

Blizzard states that their decision was based on a violation of one of the tournament’s rules - that any statement that offends a portion of the public is grounds for disqualification. However, some speculate that the real reason behind this situation is based on Blizzard’s ties to China (five percent of Blizzard is owned by the Chinese company Tencent).

The response to Blizzard’s decision was enormous. Players based in the western world mainly sided with Blitzchung and his political opinion. Many long-time associates with Blizzard (such as e-sport commentators) no longer wanted any part of Blizzard because of their decision to disqualify Blitzchung. Blizzard’s own employees have chosen to side with Hong Kong and stage a walkout.

Although Blizzard has made some amends to reduce Blitzchung’s sentence, it’s still a punishment. This event has caused Blizzard to lose the trust of its player base and associates. Going forward, Blizzard may not ever be able to recover from this mistake and will have to work delicately to face the aftermath of its actions.

Tiktok appeals to all genres ranging from “storytimes,” where people tell bizarre scenarios that they have encountered, to life hacks, videos of people dancing to popular songs, and making relatable memes. Many have said that Tiktok is slowly becoming the new Vine, but many people also disagree. One Reddit user says “TikTok is somewhat like Vine but a lot of the actual content resembles musical.ly more than Vine,” implying that vine is basically a more advanced version of musically. Vine shut down in January 17, 2017 roughly 9 months before Musically changed to Tiktok. “Going once, going twice, sold!” (BANG)

We are all judgemental. Whether we are conscious of it or not, we are all inherently creatures of judgement. In fact, studies show that within seven seconds of meeting, people will have already have formed opinions on each other.I knew this girl Cila once. She had dark skin, curly lavender hair and glasses. People said she was self-absorbed and arrogant, a troublemaker. I didn’t really know her but that didn’t stop me from judging her. Right behind everyone else, I brought my gavel down, selling myself a judgement of her based on irrelevant factors like her appearance and hearsay.

Our ability to form judgements is not wholly bad. The purest intent of "Right behind everyone having judgment is to make decisions to protect ourselves, making judgments to decide whether or not to trust people or to make simple else, I brought my gavel situational evaluations. However, we get so used to living our lives with down, selling myself a gavels in our hands that we forget the responsibility we are given when we judgement of her based are handed them. on irrelevant factors like When we forget that our personal deductions of people can be flawed, her appearance and that every Asian is not a math genius, that every person with piercings hearsay. " and dyed hair is not “angsty”, and that every popular jock is not shallow, we cross a line where judgement becomes destructive. We forget that stereotypes are not excuses for hasty assumptions, and we forget to be responsible with the gavels we possess.

Sad is the fact that the auctioneers inside of us will always try to yell “going once, going twice, sold!” and hastily bang gavels down to show the end of the time we will offer before judging a person. Maybe you too will consider that seven seconds is not enough to yell sold.

Thoughts? Gavels down or minds open?

A SMALL TOWN IN RURAL CANADA

The air had an element of mustiness as a man watched the sunset. Despite the heavy air, the man felt refreshed; the sun appeared magical, so gentle and elegant as it’s warm rays dissolved into the sky and faded into darkness. But isn’t it too early for the sun to be setting?

The man glanced down at his shadow and saw a slender figure slowly emerge from the shrubs behind him. Startled and alarmed, the man abruptly stood and began walking away. The stuffiness of the air seemed to suddenly manifest as the man picked up his pace. Looking at the shadows, he saw the figure accompanied by a wolf. The comfort of the sun was nowhere to be found. The shadow of the figure reached out at the man as the wolf growled and charged at him.

A million thoughts crossed the man’s mind as he sprinted away. The figure followed silently as the wolf violently charged. The man ran along a straight dirt road until he found himself in a field. After a while, he slowed down to catch his breath. The sun glowed an ominous red detering any sense of safety. He peeked behind him to see the shadows had caught up, leaving him paralyzed, embracing his inevitable doom, when suddenly someone said: “Hello sir.”

The man span around to see a little boy looking up at him with a puppy. The boy proceeded to say “I believe this wallet is yours? I found it next to the bench you were sitting on. It was awfully hard to catch up to you sir… why were you running so frantically?” A little Photo by Emily Zhu flabbergasted, the man let out a sigh of relief.

8 The Churchill Chronicle Magazine M U S I C R E V I E W HEAD IN THE CLOUDS II head in the clouds II B Y Z A C H A R Y R E N A year since the vibrant album ‘Head in the Clouds’ was released, the multicultural 88rising recently debuted the sequel on October 11, 2019. The album marks a shift in paradigm from indie R&B mix to electronic and R&B. The new album screams dance, with heavy emphasis on synth and electronic beats. With breakout artists such as , Joji, and NIKI, and guest appearances from hip hop mogul Swae Lee to Chinese K-pop idol Jackson Wang, ‘Head in the Clouds II’ throws a variety of singing and rapping styles out on the table. Although the album expresses a creative effort from 88rising, it does not meet the same certain expectations as its predecessor did.

The album opens with ‘These Nights’, a collaborative effort from Malaysian American rapper Rich Brian and South Korean Singer Chung Ha. Rich Brian attempts to enhance the song through the use of autotune. Too much autotune. Although it meshes well with the mellow electronic beat, it is not Rich Brian’s forte. Meanwhile, Chung Ha’s unique vocals blend well with the beat, creating an okay-at-best love song.

The album’s best includes ’Breathe’ and ‘I Love You 3000 II’. In ‘Breathe’, Joji’s unique vocals build on top of Don Krez’s fast paced, electronic beat to create one of the best songs in the album. ‘I Love You 3000 II’ is a rendition of Stephanie Poetri’s ‘I Love You 3000’ alongside Jackson Wang soft vocals; the combination proves to exhibit the best of 88rising.

With a new electronic style being the focus of the album, it’s clear that some elements need to be changed for next time. However, 88rising still has room to grow, as many of their artists are young and have yet to show their full potential.

OUTRUNNING THE STIGMA outrunning the stigma B Y C H A N T A L M A R C H A K S C H E L L Eleven students from Churchill recently attended a volunteering opportunity on Sunday, October 6th, at Eau Claire Market in the southwest of Calgary. From 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM our school volunteers worked hard at supporting the running event which strived to diminish the stigma around mental illness. This was one of the very first volunteering events that took place this school year and proved to be a very successful and educational experience.

All volunteers present at the Outrun the Stigma run came to Eau Claire with an abundance of enthusiasm and cheerfulness, perfectly matching the beautiful autumn morning the run took place in. Students had the job of sharing encouraging words with the running participants, as well as bringing forth their optimism from their stations as course marshals. Hana Aref Taher, a valued attendee at the event, described her experience in her statement, “In my opinion, it was the dedication of the volunteers and the support from the participants that made this event so successful.” Every individual attending the event, whether it was onlookers or participants, contributed feelings of positivity towards the purpose of the run.

Students are always encouraged to participate in volunteer events such as Outrun the Stigma. Not only does it allow individuals to become more well-rounded from experiences, but it also allows them to contribute to a greater cause. The Churchill Chronicle Magazine 11 Why the Federal Voting Age Should Be Lowered Anusha Karkhanis As election day draws nearer, politics remains one of the hottest topics in the country, with everybody giving in their two cents on the party leaders and their policies. An issue which has come up again, as it does during every election, is the idea of lowering the legal voting age to 16. Elizabeth May of the Green party and Jagmeet Singh of the NDPs have both been vocal in support of lowering the voting age. There are several benefits to this which have been discussed and debated since the last time the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18, back in 1970. For starters, it would greatly help voter turnout in the future by getting young adults involved in politics and the voting procedure from a younger age. Typically, the turnout rate of the 18-24 year old demographic has been the lowest. Studies show that by involving youth from 16 years of age, they are more likely to continue voting in the future. Those who do not vote while they are younger typically are less likely to vote in the future. Common concerns with lowering the age to 16 are that youth will not be mature or informed enough to cast an appropriate ballot; however, due to young people learning about democracy, politics and the Canadian electoral system as early as sixth grade, they actually may be more informed than many adults. Not only that, but more and more young people are voicing their opinions on global issues than ever- just look at all the youth climate strikes happening currently. Lastly, in Alberta, youth can start working as early as 12. They can drive, pay taxes, have jobs, get married and join the military, all at 16. Don’t they have a right to participate in choosing the government for whom they pay taxes and serve in the military for? As well, many areas which the government handles such as the education system directly affect the youth, who have no say in what impacts them the most. Overall, lowering the voting age would be beneficial for all parties - the youth, older generations, and ultimately the nation as a whole. Photo by Edward G

Dear Diary, A new student came to school today. I found out because of all the rumours about her that were being spread during the morning. Some of the rumours seemed way too harsh, and I was going to say something about spreading rumours about a girl we didn’t even know, but the bell rang before I could say anything. I forgot to grab my textbook so I headed back to my locker. When I got there, I noticed a girl standing around not doing much. Her brows were furrowed and she was staring holes into a crumpled piece of paper in her hand. When she looked away from her paper, her eyes practically lit up when she saw me, “Hey, there!” I gave her an awkward wave as I tried to see if I recognized her from a class or a club or something. I studied her face, but still, no one was coming to mind. “So, like I was saying, could you help me get to my class? I don’t want to be late on my first day.” That’s when everything clicked in my mind. She was the new kid, duh. “Oh yeah, for sure! Let me take a look at your schedule,” as I looked it over, I noticed we had a few classes together. As we walked, we made small talk and she was really fun to talk to. Those rumours were totally just gossip! Tomorrow, before I go to school, I’m going to practice saying “Hey” to her. Or maybe “Hello” would be better. I’m not totally sure, but as long as I say it with a smile, I think I’ll be okay. I hope we can be friends soon. I’ll write about it tomorrow, I promise.

Love, Sam. “Take“Take Me Me Back” Back” Malaika Khan

Take me back to the days when I was young When anything and everything could be done When there were a million different ways I wasted my limited time and days

Take me back to when I was a senseless beast When the most I could do was the least When I was blind to the possibility It was my very own responsibility

Take me back to when I had all the chances So I could act upon those mere glances Those little thoughts of what could be Not knowing how much it would haunt me

Take me back to when I was so unaware It could've been the answer to my prayer If I had taken that risk, so dangerous it seemed If I fought harder to make myself esteemed Photographed by Ingrid Wang Photographed by Take me back to when the future lay ahead I'd do it differently, and now I wouldn't dread The choices I made and the excuses I gave But it's too late now, I'm headed to the grave 14 The Churchill Chronicle Magazine Monthly Favourites by Emily Kwon

Teachers are Role Models by Zoha Ahmad

Great teachers, encouraging us to develop our skills and talents, are positive and inspirational role models. Along with our parents, teachers help us learn from our mistakes and reach our full potentials. As influential figures, they do more than teach us the curriculum; they impart life's most crucial lessons. For example, we learned how to develop positive connections with our peers during the first years of school. In this way, teachers are founts of experience, having gone through what their students are encountering. They thus pass along valuable life lessons that go beyond simple schoolwork.

Despite what some may say, teachers can be best friends with their students and help them discover their paths. They advise our educational goals through unique teaching methods and specific learning processes. Our teachers always motivate us to work in harmony. Understanding the daily problems we face, they provide solutions that are both professional and personal. They encourage positivity facing life. Their trust in us, to the future generations, deserve immense respect and gratitude. We should all remember that we learn not only for school but for life.

To IB or Not to IB?

One dominant aspect of Sir Winston Churchill High School is the stellar International Baccalaureate program. Churchill has not only one of the most rigorous programs in the province, but an excellent IB program. However, in Ingredients grade 10, I faced a tough decision regarding IB. Asking for references, reporting grades and opening our letters in the main foyer… It was like 1 tsp sesame oil ● applying to a university but on a smaller scale. As Churchill already had a 1 tsp olive oil ● gruelling regular curriculum, partaking in the IB program seemed like overkill. Even so, there were many upsides to the program. 2 cloves garlic, minced ●

The discipline an IB student is under is unparalleled; the calibre of 2 tsp freshly grated ginger ● material and the essential study skills we learn in 2.5 years is truly amazing. Previous IB students have had great success moving onto university, ½ cup shredded carrots ● having improved time-management and organizational skills immensely. These skills can be applied to the rest of our lives. More importantly, the ½ cup of chopped broccoli ● friendships we create are essential for trudging through the mountain of homework. 2-3 oz portions of Ramen (discard the ● flavour packets) However, sacrifices are required when taking on this risky curriculum, no matter how 3 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce ● great the IB program is. There may (more to taste) not be enough time to go out with friends, watch every Marvel movie on 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce ● opening day, or even get a solid (more or less, depending on your heat tolerance) 8 hours of sleep. But that is the beauty of the program; there has to be a balance between academics and school This rendition of packaged and we must learn to appreciate the ramen is easy to recreate program as a learning experience. We speak of beauty as if we are critics to judge faces of others, And we make standards so unrealistic Yet some have already reached We marginalize people or so that is how it feels And we make others light while make others shadows Photo by Shivali Sen It feels as if pretty is all the world can see The creases on our cheeks or the crinkles beside our eyes, But what about beauty? The beauty. When we smile at little children Or the pain in those eyes when you see the less fortunate And when we speak While pouring our hearts out And the light gleaming in our eyes Could light up villages Tell me, what happened to the beauty In destruction. Hurricanes and forest fires that live amongst us And the beauty in our demons Our demons alive within our souls Oh, and the beauty when we simply feed ourselves Innocence and youth painting our faces Beauty isn't appearance, Or features of our bodies Rather it’s in those things that make us human
