Keep up. You’re going to get lost,” my dad called out. That was my first mistake: visiting Times Square on a Saturday. It was like a large scale version of school hallways, but with more mosquitoes and a A letter from the team lot more giant ads. “Okay, okay.” We had spent the entire day walking across Manhattan. At this point, I was spent. I was fatigued. I was drained. I was every synonym of tired you could think of. Jetlag was pulling at my eyelids, and my Hey Churchillians! overall well-being was equivalent to that of a raisin. My legs felt like cooked spaghetti, but I just sigh, half jogging, half-dragging myself Welcome to the November edition of the Churchill Chronicle! forward. Since the Chronicle’s inaugural print release in 2016, we have Suddenly, a gloved hand appears in front of my face. I stop mid-step, been continuously supported by our fellow peers, staff, and the taken aback. Standing before me was a man dressed head to toe in a community. To all of you, we would like to extend our greatest Spiderman costume. For what felt like an eternity, I stood there contemplating. Do I shake his hand? There has to be a catch to this. Maybe thanks. he’s just really polite. Would it be rude to walk away? His costume looks nice, so he should be too… right? My name is Jolie Gan, and I am honoured to be the Editor in Finally, out of politeness (or sheer stupidity), I shook his hand. Big Chief for this year - along with the rest of the team: Belle Li, the mistake. Chief Operating Officer; Olivia Zheng, the Chief Creative Officer; and Egi Vasil; the Human Resources and Marketing Director, we He tightened his grip and wouldn’t let go. As if out of thin air, a whole squad of Marvel characters appeared from the crowd and swarmed me, look forward to another successful year of student engagement trapping me in a tight circle. I stood frozen, not knowing whether to laugh and creativity. or to cry. Is this a joke? Am I being kidnapped? Both seemed equally likely at this point. Finally, I found my voice and cried out, “Dad! Help!” My dad whipped around, assessed my current situation and hurried back to save This year, we are proud to announce that the Chronicle has me - only to be mobbed by the cartoon characters as well. grown immensely - we are one of the largest clubs at Churchill and this group is the largest in Chronicle history. Of course, “Great, now what?” I thought, defeated. “We’re toast.” none of this would be possible without our wonderful group of “Come on! Let’s take picture!” Batman said in broken English. He took my contributors - I would like to personally thank you all. With dad’s phone, and the squad quickly assembled around us and posed for a photo. Still in a state of confusion and pure terror, I plastered a smile on such an amazing team, we look forward to seeing what great my face and hoped for the best. After what seemed like a hundred photos feats the Chronicle can and will continue to achieve. later, Batman finally gave back my dad’s phone. “Phew,” I breathed a sigh of relief. “They just wanted a picture.” But of Jolie Gan course, I spoke too early. I felt a sharp tap on my shoulder, so I turned Belle Li around to see Ironman holding a sign that read, ‘Tips Please’. Olivia Zheng “I’m sorry, I don’t have any mon-” Thankfully, my dad came to my rescue Egi Vasil and gave Ironman a five-dollar bill, after which we quickly walked away. “Wow. Were we just robbed by friendly robbers?” I asked, stunned. My dad didn't answer - only shook his head in disappointment and kept on walking. The Churchill Chronicle Magazine 1 By Celine Gerez Anastasia brings her hands up to her throat. She barely has time to cry out in shock before the warm, crimson gold starts to run past her trembling hands and onto her dress. She stares for a moment, mesmerized the dark red mixing with the royal blue fabric, before she is brought to panic by the lack of air in her lungs. She inhales sharply, aspirating a wave of blood that coats her lungs, choking her from the inside and throwing her body into indescribable chaos. Her attacker side steps her with ease, her knife and dress still slick with her blood. A faint image of her registers in Anastasia's mind, the way the same blood interacts so differently with the same type of fabric. She glances up at the assailant, the same set of deep hazel eyes staring back at her as they lock gazes before her legs finally give out, forcing her to her knees. Images flash in her mind of intricately decorated Queens, kneeling before the executioner's block in the very position she was in now. Long silky hair wrapped up neatly into white caps, manicured hands poised behind their backs, gold crosses dangling in the air for a brief moment before slumping down onto the stage. It’s strange how fitting these images are, how they have all met their end by the same driving force. They’re almost enviable. Almost. Why else would people gather around for such a spectacle if not to see their paragon of royalty dethroned and disgraced? Afterall, it was them and their ambitions that brought this fate upon them, they are the only ones to blame. Anastasia’s thoughts are derailed as she makes contact with the unforgiving pavement. She gawks in morbid fascination as the sidewalk laps up her blood, unrelenting and insatiable. Everything around her blurs and melts into colors and shades. She forces out a whisper, an ugly gurgling sound that is barely audible, although she is unaware if the sound even left her throat at all. She feels her entire body collapsing, the pool of blood finding its way up her eyes and clouding her vision until the only thing she sees is black tinted with red. She could feel her lungs drowning and she takes one last desperate breath before she once again feels the cold embrace of a knife. RISE AND Moments. SHINE We have moments. Little snippets of time forever encapsulated in our memory. BY Tiny chests of images stored somewhere deep within the folds of our brain. So rare and treasured that such a moment could only be witnessed once. VAISHU A moment is filled with whatever you want it to be. Laughter, anguish, ridicule or joy. KODURI You choose your moments. You choose them wisely.
