The Heart of the Matter: Resident Living Well with Profile: Helen Ramsdell By Lori Shutrump Heart Failure Living to be 105 years old is rare – as rare as Helen Ramsdell, who recently celebrated this monumental birthday. Oh, the changes she has seen! When she was born near Middletown, Ohio, the average life expectancy was 47 years of age, her family home did not have electricity or indoor plumbing, and women did not have the right to vote. “I was the oldest of seven children, and we lived on a farm with all kinds of animals,” she says. “We farmed the land, made our own maple syrup, milked the cows by hand, and every Saturday I cleaned and refilled the oil lamps.” She smiles and points to the lamp in her apartment, “That was my aunt’s courting lamp. If it was on, the boys were welcome to come over.” Helen’s keen mind easily retrieves memories from a century ago. “We had a tank outside that collected rain water for cooking and bathing, and we took our baths on “Oh, the changes Saturday night in a metal tub in the kitchen,” she says. I have seen!” Tuesdays • 10 a.m. • 90 minutes She attended a one-room school house with 30 children in Mary H. Kittredge Chapel grades one through eight. Helen graduated from the Cincinnati RSVP: Lori Shutrump 513.539.6062 Conservatory of Music with a master’s degree in music.

  • Frank Sinatra's Cal Neva Lodge
Frank Sinatra’s Cal-Neva Lodge by Steve Fischer Bones Renner was an old time gangster from San Francisco who owned the Cal-Neva Lodge at Crystal Bay on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. But Bones also owed the IRS $800,000 in back taxes. So Bones asked his friend Wingy Grober if he could pass the ownership of the Cal- Neva, who also, as a result of his sud- den and unexplainable ownership of a casino, ended up with his own set of tax problems. With the IRS after him, Wingy Grober put the Cal-Neva Lodge up for sale. Cal-Neva in the 1930’s On July 13, 1960, the day John F. What also didn’t make the news- Cal-Neva, he really was. names, Vol. 57 No. 3, September, 2009, 162–174 Selling Decency and Innocence: Names of Singing Groups in the Malt Shop Memories Collection Margaret G Lee Hampton University, USA This study examines the names of sixty-fi ve male and female singing groups in the Malt Shop Memories collection and their economic, social, and cultural infl uences. Record companies’ efforts to sell the emerging rock’n’roll to teenagers of mid-1950s to mid-1960s affl uent America resulted in group names intended to reduce the negative attitudes toward the music. Non-threatening group names were designed to exude images of whole- someness and purity to appease parents and the public who regarded rock’n’roll as chaotic, vulgar, and the cause of America’s social ills. These names, refl ecting such ordinary categories as Birds and Animals, Place Names, Mystique and Wonder, and more, combined with a mandated dress code to sell an image of decency and innocence in the face of a rebellious new style of music. keywords Malt Shop group names, Rock’n’roll group names, Doo-wop group names, 1950s-60s singing groups, Rock music group names, Girl group names, Vocal group names Introduction and background Malt Shop Memories is a Time Life, 150-song, ten-CD collection of oldies classics by the original artists. Released in 2006, the collection encompasses the period, as described in its television advertisement, “between the birth of rock ‘n’ roll in the mid-50’s to the British Invasion of the mid-60’s [. .] when American pop music took the world by storm.” This was one of the most innovative and dynamic periods in America’s music history.

  • Activity Packet Points to Ponder
The Next “When Swing Was King” Activity Packet This time around we have another 40 Multiple Choice questions for you (with answers provided afterward) as well as a few “points to ponder” that we hope you will enjoy. For next time, we are preparing a couple of pop culture-themed crossword puzzles for you to try. Despite the quarantine, Claire and I are keeping busy. For instance, we are engaged in a lot of correspondence, learning how to use Zoom for video conversations (amazing technology), home projects, and creating these activity pages for you. We are also doing a lot of reading, some writing, and I’m working on a sermon I’ll be giving at Emmanuel Church this Sunday morning. I will actually be preaching to an empty church sanctuary while some tech guys will “live stream” the video over the internet. Unusual times we’re living in, huh? But, I’m sure, like many of you, we are earnestly praying for America and the world, asking the Lord to deliver us from the virus (and the fears associated with it), to get our economy back to some degree of efficiency, and yet to learn those crucial spiritual lessons He has for us in this crisis. We miss you all. But we do hope these pages we’re sending over bring a little relief from the tedium of these quarantine days. Keep looking up! Points to Ponder “There are three signs of old age: loss of memory and…Well, I forget the other two.” (Red Skelton) “Just the other day, it seems, the kids were running through the house, slamming doors, breaking glass, making noise.
