Carmen opens on Saturday, March 30, 2019 for four performances at the Civic Theatre. Additional performances are April 2, 5, and 7 (matinee), 2019. Bringing her signature role to San Diego Opera for her house debut is mezzo-soprano Ginger Costa-Jackson. The Los Angeles Times’ critic Mark Swed noted “Ginger Costa-Jackson, an exceptional young Sicilian American mezzo-soprano, brought a dangerous, animalistic vibrancy to the title role. There is a lusty yet somber quality to her strikingly dark mezzo, the ideal voice for Carmen.” She is joined by tenor Robert Watson, also in a Company debut, as Don José. Also in Company debuts are soprano Sarah Tucker as Micaëla and baritone Scott Conner as Escamillo. Rounding out the cast is bass Patrick Blackwell in his Company debut as Zuniga, soprano Tasha Koontz as Frasquita, mezzo-soprano Guadalupe Paz as Mercedes in her Company debut, tenor Felipe Prado in his house debut as Remendado, baritone Bernardo Bermudez as Dancairo, and baritone Brian Vu in a Company debut as Morales. Maestro Yves Abel, last heard conducting 2016’s Madama Butterfly, returns to lead these performances, and Kyle Lang, who made his directorial debut with 2017’s As One, returns to stage the action.

The repertoire is planned so that across a full year it will cover the widest range of world class theatre that entertains, inspires and challenges the broadest possible audience. Particular regard is given to ticket-pricing, affordability, access and audience development, both through the Travelex season and more generally in the provision of lower price tickets for all performances. Geographical reach is achieved through touring and NT Live broadcasts to cinemas in the UK and overseas. Not only did the company present more than 200 exiting performances, but we also welcomed Yannick Nézet-Séguin as the Met’s new Jeanette Lerman- Neubauer Music Director. Maestro Nézet-Séguin is only the third conductor to hold the title of Music Director since the company’s founding in 1883. I am also happy to report that the 2018–19 season marked the fifth year running in which the company’s finances were balanced or very nearly so, as we recorded a very small deficit of less than 1% of expenses. The season opened with the premiere of a new staging of Saint-Saëns’s epic Samson et Dalila and also included three other new productions, as well as three exhilarating full cycles of Wagner’s Ring and a full slate of 18 revivals. The Live in HD series of cinema transmissions brought opera to audiences around the world for the 13th season, with ten broadcasts reaching more than two million people. Combined earned revenue for the Met (box office, media, and presentations) totaled $121 million. As in past seasons, total paid attendance for the season in the opera house was 75%. The new productions in the 2018–19 season were the work of three distinguished directors, two having had previous successes at the Met and one making his company debut.

    DIMITRIS PAKSOGLOU – Tenor Born in Greece. Dimitris Paksoglou first embarked on a career as an actor and studied at the National Superior School of Drama. As an actor he went on to appear in important Greek theatres, including the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, the Greek National Theatre and the Athens Megaron. He then decided to make a career change and studied singing at the Athens National Conservatory under the guidance of the famous baritone Kostas Paskalis and Marina Krilovici, graduating with distinction. He moved to France where he appeared with several opera companies and his success lead Greek National Opera to offer him a contract as a principal tenor. He continues to appear in leading roles with the company, which he combines with guest appearances abroad. Greek Dimitris Paksoglou does not sing Cavaradossi with the usual slightly emotional Mediterranean glow. His tenor is more powerfully virile, but also with beautiful splashes of tenderness. He makes his famous song for life with considerable intensity. AFTONBLADET – Lennart Bromander - Monday 10th February 2020 Dimitris Paksoglou who sang Cavaradossi is a real Italian tenor (although he is Greek) with plenty of power and clear tone up to the highest register.     DIMITRI PLATANIAS – Baritone Born in Greece, he is now recognised as one of the foremost Verdi Baritones of the younger generation. Winning the Alexandra Trianti Scholarship enabled him to study in Italy under Masako Tanaka Protti and at the showcase concert for the winners of this bequest, Rodney Milnes said in Opera Magazine: The most impressive singer was the baritone Dimitris Platanias, who on this showing could sing Rigoletto anywhere in the world: beautifully warm, heroic tone, a dynamic range from forte to a pianissimo that lost nothing in colour or substance, musicianship and instinctive feeling for text – a name to watch out for in the current dearth of Verdi baritones. He went on to make his debut at Greek National Opera and his first appearance in Italy as Gerard ANDREA CHENIER. His debut at La Fenice di Venezia was as RIGOLETTO, a role that he has since made his own and it was as RIGOLETTO that he made his highly acclaimed debut at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, leading Richard Morrison of The Times to say: …and the stunning Greek baritone Dimitri Platanias, making his Covent Garden debut. In an unprecedented collaboration, Vancouver Opera joins four other Canadian opera companies as they co-present this opera reaching more opera patrons than ever before. Acclaimed director Alan Gauthier sets La Traviata in the decadent music hall scene of 1920s’ Paris. The opera begins when the curtain rises on Violetta Valéry (the ‘fallen woman’ of the opera’s title), a famous Parisian courtesan who is consumed by love and a life-threatening illness. At a party she is introduced to Alfredo Germont, who proposes a toast to true love. However, darker undercurrents are running beneath the glamorous scene—there are subtle hints of Violetta’ doomed love for Alfredo and the hostility the lovers will encounter when they attempt to break with society’s norms. He continued with Dimitris Toufexis in Athens; he subsequently studied conducting at the Berlin Music Academy under Hans-Martin Rabenstein, graduating in 1996 with top marks in conducting. At the same time, IMPRESSIONS he attended conducting seminars with Miltiadis Karidis at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy in Dresden and with Sir Simon Rattle. He also holds a Law degree from Athens University. He has FOR conducted such important orchestras as the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Opera of Eastern Saxonia, Magdeburg Philharmonic, New Brandenburg Philharmonic, SAXOPHONE Thüringen Symphony Orchestra, Niederschlesien Orchestra (Poland and Czech Republic), as well as all the major Greek AND ORCHESTRA orchestras. Since 2001, he has collaborated regularly with the Greek National Opera, conducting productions of Tosca, Il trovatore, L’Italiana in Algeri, Les contes d’Hoffmann, L’elisir d’ amore and Photograph: © Koukis Fedora. He has collaborated with famous soloists such as Aldo Theodorakis Ciccolini, Paul Badura-Skoda, Shlomo Mintz, Martino Tirimo, Teresa Berganza and Cheryl Studer. He has given particular emphasis to promoting Greek culture, especially Greek Skalkottas classical music, and young Greek musicians abroad. From 1999 to 2004 he was Permanent Conductor and Director of Musical Studies at the Opera of Eastern Saxonia, Germany. Since July 2004, he has been Artistic Director of the Antoniou Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded, in collaboration with the University of Crete, a CD of Mikis Theodorakis’s Axion Esti.
