C, z THE SENIOR OBSERVER C,- LEGISLATION · 1986 < z Vol. 2, No. 3 - March 1986 R. Alice Drought, Ph.D., Editor 0 EDITORIAL ....I SENIOR ACI'ION '86 0018 UWERWAY N::M IS THE TIME to see that every town and Board of -(..) Supervisors proclaims 1986 as Senior Action Year, just as Governor z Babbitt has proclairred it for the State of Arizona. The mission statement shared at our March 11th Kick-Off luncheon for :::> this Senior ACI1ION Year set forth the following goals: to secure 0 maximum federal and state funding for long term care; to support (..) programs for health and fitness; to increase state support for pro grams helping older Arizonans; to promote work and service oppor tunities for senior citizens; to use the talents and life experi > ences of senior adults as a neans for inproving the quality of life a: for all; and to support community activities that will contribute 0 to intergenerational understanding among all age groups. en At the luncheon, reference was made to a recent Hugh Downs news release declaring that "Old people were tirne travellers, full of -> experience and ••• burnished with a patina of wisdom." But he !X)ints C out that the tragedy of age is often nonrecognition. Through concerted effort in meeting the goals of our mission statement, let's < change this attitude. Let's rally together in 1986 to demonstrate that older people..a.t:e "repositories of accumrrulated exi;erience" as Mr. en Downs contends. "' a: Let's step up our ma.rshalling for support of long term care financing. 0 Let's assist all senior organizations in their resolve to get all of our older citizens registered to vote. Let's identify our centenar z ians (and our junior centenarians ages 95-99). 'We are preparing a a: list of year-long events and want to include your activities in our master calendar. Our Senior Action Steering Committee is available w foe consultation and will travel. Write or call the G:>vernor's Advi > sory Council on Aging office at 255-4710. 0 KM IS THE TIME. ~ need YOUR commitment to ensure success! C, Dorothy Powell, Chair ..
