THE BAND CELEBRATES THE 40TH ANNIVERARY OF THE LAST WALTZ Four New 40th Anniversary Editions Of The Band’s Historic Final Concert, Including Collector’s Edition Boxed Set Featuring Never-Before-Seen Martin Scorsese Shooting Script Available November 11 From Rhino LOS ANGELES – On Thanksgiving Day 1976, The Band took the stage for the very last time at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco. The concert, aptly billed as The Last Waltz, has become one of the most revered performances of all time. For the show, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson were joined by an all-star group of music pioneers, including Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young, among others. The evening was captured on film by director Martin Scorsese. Released theatrically in April 1978 to critical acclaim, The Last Waltz is still considered by many to be the greatest concert film ever made. Rhino will celebrate THE LAST WALTZ with four new 40th Anniversary Editions, including the pairing of the audio and video for the first time. All formats will be available November 11 except the Collector’s Edition, which will be available December 9. 40th Anniversary Edition (2-CD) – Original soundtrack with newly remastered audio from the original master tapes on two CDs. 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (4-CD/Blu-Ray) – Complete audio from the concert, including rehearsals and outtakes, plus The Last Waltz film on Blu- Ray. 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Vinyl (6-LP) – Complete audio from the concert, including rehearsals and outtakes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl for the first time and presented in an ornate lift-top box. 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition (4-CD/2-Blu-Ray) – Limited to 2,500 copies, this version includes: -Complete audio from the concert. -The Last Waltz film on Blu-ray. -Second Blu-Ray disc including a rarely seen interview from the 1990s with Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson, photo gallery, and 5.1 audio mix of the original album. -300-page book, bound in red faux-leather with a full replication of Scorsese’s shooting scrip, rare and previously unseen photos, set sketches, three foldout storyboards, and a foreword by Scorsese. Available as a 4-CD/Blu-Ray set and — for the first time — on vinyl as a 6-LP set, the 40th AnniversaryDeluxe Edition of the original soundtrack has 54 tracks, including the entire concert, as well as rehearsals and outtakes. Among the rarities are performances not featured in the film, such as “Furry Sings The Blues” with Joni Mitchell and “All Our Past Times” with Eric Clapton, plus rehearsals for “Caravan” with Van Morrison, “Such A Night” with Dr. John, and “King Harvest (Has Surely Come)” a song that was not performed in concert. The CD version also includes newly-penned liner notes revered music journalists David Fricke and Ben Fong-Torres along with a classic essay from 1977 written by iconic author Emmett Grogan. The 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, limited to 2,500 copies worldwide, includes a replication of Scorsese’s original shooting script. Once the film was complete, Scorsese had two copies of the script bound in a red leather book; one copy for himself and the other a gift to Robbie Robertson, which now resides at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Collector’s Edition also includes a foreword by Scorsese and an essay from screenwriter Mardik Martin. Robertson will be busy during The Last Waltz 40th anniversary. On November 15, he will release Testimony (Crown Archetype), a new memoir in which he finally tells his own spellbinding story of the band that changed music history, his extraordinary personal journey, and his creative friendships with some of the greatest artists of the last half-century. Robertson will also release a new musical anthology of the same name on UMe on November 11. The 18-track collection, curated by Robertson to be a deft complement to the memoir, features a mix of live and studio tracks spanning his entire career.     CHAPTER ONE MAKING CHANGES HAPPEHAPPENN IN TERRA INCOGNITA A Process of Re-enactment I picked up my New York Times on April 20, 2012 and read that Levon Helm had died. I quietly turned to the obituary page and as I read what was written about this man, memories flooded back to me. The drinking age was twenty-one so we had to sneak in the back door off Yonge Street, Toronto’s main drag. It was a seedy section of the street below Bloor then, lined with strip joints and bars, and because of this it was one of places where you could go and hear exciting music in the early sixties. I was there with my friend, John. The two of us were freshly admitted undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo and anxious to make early marks in life. So we became concert promoters. This was a short career because even then concerts were presented by organized thugs and there was no room for amateurs like us. On one occasion we brought into town a singer who had a number one hit in Canada, Ronnie Hawkins and his band, known then as the Hawks. We got to know Ronnie pretty well and he was kind to us ingénues. About two weeks after the concert we got a phone call from Ronnie’s manager inviting us to come into the city and watch the band play for what he called an interview. So, on a Friday afternoon John and I crammed into our friend Ted’s Porsche 356 and headed down Highway 401.

    I’M NOT THERE (1956-2007) Stephen Scobie Je est un autre—Arthur Rimbaud I’m Not There (2007) In this autumn season of 2007, I can see that I am going to be thinking a lot about the Bob Dylan song known as “I’m Not There (1956).” At least, that is the title given to it on most of its early, bootleg appearances. Now that it has finally been officially released, the sub-title date has been dropped—which is a pity (since it added an element of mystery to the song) but also understandable (since no good explanation of the date has ever been given). “I’m Not There” is perhaps the ultimate Dylan bootleg, and has always been a subject for cult idealization as the most obscure of Dylan’s “lost” songs: a major master- piece that almost no one knows, and which indeed seems to conspire actively against being known. Now, it has become the title of Todd Haynes’s movie I’m Not There, “inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan”—“many” being the operative word. The film is already famous for casting six different actors to play aspects of Dylan at different points in his career. If this strategy is a gimmick, it is a successful one: the film is generating vast amounts of advance publicity, much of it based on the photographs of Cate Blanchett looking, uncannily and androgynously, like 1966 Bob. The film is not due for North American release until late November, though it has played in prestigious festivals like Toronto, New York, and Venice.

Heylin, Telegraph 32 pg 86. Introduction This booklet / File (like the anonymous companion volume “Songs of the Underground” for RTR) is intended to document the audio resources available to collectors concerning the 1974 tour with the Band. It is intended to supplement and possibly correct the three major resources available to collectors (Krogsgaard, Dundas & Olof‟s files). Several PA tapes have emerged since Krogsgaard was last updated, and (I believe) there are errors in Dundas (concerning the PA tapes from 11 Feb 1974) that I wished to address. Additionally, none of these references (except for one full listing in Krogsgaard) include the Band sets. While details are difficult to obtain, I have included details of about three-quarters of the Band sets. It is hoped that readers on the web may contribute more information. I believe that the Band was a significant contributor to the 1974 Tour and should be included in any 1974 Tour documentation. I have also identified the sources for the Vinyl and CD bootlegs, where my resources allowed. Often the attributions on Bootlegs are misleading, incomplete or wrong. As an example „Before and After the Flood‟ claims to be from MSG NYC 30.1.1974 when it is actually a combination of the PA tapes from 31.1.74 (evening) and 11.2.74 (evening).

    6. Name: Eric Garth Hudson Years: August 2, 1937- Present Residence: West Saugerties, New York near Woodstock Brief Biography: Born in Windsor, Ontario, Hudson was the son of musicians. He attended University of Western Ontario for music. As a child he played organ during services at St. Luke’s Anglican Church. He found a niche when he joined a rock and roll group, the Capers, from 1958 through 1961. From 1961 till 1963 he became the music consultant, organist, and saxophonist for Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. Hawkins split from the group in ’63. In 1966 the Hawks were introduced to Bob Dylan and accompanied him on a tour. At the conclusion of the long tour the band bought and lived in a pink house in West Saugerties, New York near Woodstock. By 1968 the Hawks became known as The Band and released their debuted album Music From Big Pink. Up until 1976, the Band toured and recorded around the world. This final concert was recorded in Martin Scorsese’s film, “The Last Waltz.” After the split, Hudson collaborated with many musicians to make albums as well as directors on soundtracks such as “The Right Stuff” and Martin Scorsese’s films “Raging Bull”. The Band often reunited in the 80s and 90s. In 1991, he moved back to Woodstock and recorded three more albums with the Band. In 2001 he released his first solo album. Major Achievements: Garth was inducted into the JUNO Hall of Fame (The Band), 1989, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (The Band), 1994, Hamilton Dofasco Lifetime of Achievement Award (The Band), 2007, and Grammy Lifetime of Achievement Award (The Band), 2008.
