We Can Succinctly Outline Some Points of Canadianness Converging with Southernness in an Array of Band Songs, Including We can succinctly outline some points of Canadianness converging with southernness in an array of Band songs, including: • musicality :The Band’s amazing amalgams of blues, jazz, rockabilly, country, folk, R&B/soul, blues-based rock, and gospel that summon variegated ideas of southernness. Toronto-born guitarist and primary songwriter Robbie Robertson proposes a somewhat misty-eyed account of the U.S. South as inherently seeping music. When he first arrived down on the Mississippi Delta from Canada in the early 1960s, he realized it was “the middle of the wagon of rock ‘n’ roll . Everything was more musically oriented, and 1 didn’t know if it was coming from the people or just from the air.” Probably not. But the music often is driven by and in turn drives this mythos of autochthonous southern musicality, in the teeth of the highly, meticulously constructed impetus of The Band’s applications, or appropriations, of said “natural-born” regional musicality. Their arch command of heightened artifice, to the point of self-consciously garish showmanship, in their reproductions of southern musicality is evident, for instance, in “The W. S. Walcott Medicine Show,” which simulates the swirling energy and surrealist fare of F. S. Wolcott’s Original Rabbit Foot’s Minstrels, a traveling show that Helm witnessed when he was a boy down South.• • rurality: The un-urban and un-urbane are key in The Band’s songs, set both North and South. Country living comes with costs (difficult economic conditions) and benefits (less cluttered surroundings and ecological beauty and peace). Such touting of foundational ruralness appears notably in “King Harvest (Has Surely Come),” which references attempts by the Trade Union Unity League, a branch of the Communist Party USA, to organize farmers into unions in the Depression-era South. In “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,’’Virgil Kane declares his allegiance to an agrarian life passed down through the generations: “Like my father before me / I will work the land.” The forced immigrants in “Acadian Driftwood” resettle south of the Canadian border to work in “the sugar fields just up from New Orleans,” although the speaker eventually sets his “compass north” to return to Canada because he’s got “winter in [his] blood.” 126 / Turner.

  • Acadian Fiddling Traditions
Acadian Fiddling Traditions !by Devon Léger When two Acadians meet, the first things we ask each other are along the lines of “Where are you from,” Where’s your family from,” or “What’s your last name?” Acadians are people of a diaspora, a forced migration that spread from our homeland in Eastern Canada throughout the Western world, and to this day there’s a kind of inbred need in us to try and trace our roots back to some kind of common ground. That diaspora is why, try as we might, it’s so hard to define Acadian traditional music. Each region where Acadians settled has its own traditions, and Acadians have always been very accepting and curious about surrounding cultures. Acadians are also a pacifistic people. That’s part of the legend of the Acadians, that by choosing not to choose sides in the French-English wars, we were expelled from Nova Scotia by the British in 1755, an event known as Le Grand Dérangement, or the Great Deportation. It’s a kind of spirit that lasts to this day in the Acadian willingness to accept new influences and new ideas, certainly in music. In a sense, this differentiates Acadians in Canada from our French-speaking cousins in Québec. Québécois culture has a strong streak of independence from the Anglophone world that you don’t find in Acadian culture or music (though early Québécois musicians were just as happy to borrow from Anglophone sources). This also explains why you’ll hear so little traditional Acadian music when you travel to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, but will hear lots of Down East fiddling, Cape Breton Scottish fiddling, Acadian bluegrass, or straight country.

18024-05 Faragher Forum 3/2/07 8:53 AM Page 82 “A Great and Noble Scheme”: Thoughts on the Expulsion of the Acadians IN THE AUTUMN OF 1755 OFFICERS AND TROOPS from New England, acting under the authority of the colonial governors of Nova Scotia and Massachusetts, systematically rounded up more than 7,000 Acadians who lived in communities along the shores of the Bay of Fundy. Men, women, and children alike were crowded into transport vessels and deported in small groups to the other British colonies. Many families were separated, some never to meet again. The remaining 10,000 to 12,000 Acadians managed to escape and spent years as refugees. Many took up arms in resistance. The campaign of removal continued for eight years, by which time a total of more than 10,000 Acadians had been forced from their homes and dispersed widely across the Atlantic world. Meanwhile, their property was plundered, their communities were torched and their lands were seized. Some of the most appalling violence occurred at the site of present-day Fredericton, New Brunswick, in a village called Sainte-Anne along both sides of the St. John River, which was home to approximately 1,000 Acadians. In November 1758, Colonel Robert Monckton, in command of 2,000 troops, ascended the river as far as present-day Gagetown, leaving a swath of destruction on both banks; he succeeded in capturing few of the Acadians living there, though, as most of them had fled upriver to Sainte-Anne. To remedy this, two months later in February 1759 Monckton sent a company of 15 New England rangers, under the command of Lieutenant Moses Hazen of Massachusetts, to strike that community.

It really is a relief to get over those tricky changes left over from other, poor efforts.Negative: I wish the book had a few more songs. Whats there is great. I try and offer an example of weaving together different geographical connections not ordinarily done so prominently in regional geography approaches. In August 2015, I spend a few weeks in one of eastern Canada's Maritime Provinces on the Atlantic [1][2], not quite geared up to do a re-take of Billy Connolly‘s: Journey to the Edge of the World from Halifax, Nova Scotia on the Canadian Atlantic through the notorious Northwest Passage to Vancouver Island on the Canadian Pacific coast, screened by ITV in 2008), so staying put in Nova Scotia itself. On the plane approaching Halifax, a Canadian businessman informed us that this time we should make it since the wind was not against us – unlike at times when the plane approaching from the west cannot make it there, having to return to Ottawa or Montreal. Nova Scotia is one of the Maritime provinces, stretching 500 kilometres from northeast to southwest, with a shoreline of over 6,000 kilometres, with no point further from the sea than 70 kilometres [3].

im Auftrag: medienAgentur Stefan Michel T 040-5149 1467 F 040-5149 1465 [email protected] THE BAND 40 Jahre The Last Waltz Vier brandneue Jubiläums-Editionen des historischen Abschiedskonzertes! Dezember. Die Formate • 40th Anniversary Edition (2-CD) – Original-Soundtrack mit neu gemastertem Audio von den Original- Mastertapes auf zwei CDs. • 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (4-CD/Blu-Ray) – Der gesamte Audio-Mitschnitt des Konzerts mit Aufnahmen von der Probe und Outtakes und dem The Last Waltz-Film auf Blu-Ray.
