Ann Dowley Spillane originally from Mayfield, now living in Glanmire has received the May Cork Person of the Month for providing voluntary support for women who have been touched by cancer. Ann, who was diagnosed with cancer herself, felt the need for an organisation that would provide support, chat and comfort for fellow sufferers. She formed The Girls Club to provide that voluntary support for women who have been directly or indirectly touched by cancer. “The club is all about bringing fun back to the lives of those fighting cancer and provide a drop-in place of positivity and expert information by invited professional speakers,” said Ann Dowley Spillane. The Girls Club headquarters is at 26 St. Paul’s Ave., off Lavitt's Quay, close to Paul Street car park access ramp. Cancer sufferers can drop in any day Monday to Friday. They provide services such as Relaxation and Reflexology classes, Zumba and Aerobics, Yoga and Walking Club activities. For those that cannot visit, they provide a telephone helpline on (021) 4949090. As The Girls Club organisation was only formed over a year ago, Ann Dowley Spillane is looking for volunteers in a number of areas, such as General Support Care, Event Management, Counsellors, Holistic Therapists and Fundraisers. Ann now hopes to form The Boys Club, to provide similar support structures for men and their families. Further information is available on www.girlsclubcork.com.
