28 | Muskerry News Live in the Parish - Play in the Parish How many times have you passed by Blarney G.A.A. grounds and wondered what really goes on inside the gate? First impressions of most people are that it is just a pitch with a few dressing rooms. Who plays there? Who uses the facilities? How many people does it take to run the G.A.A. club? How much does it cost to run the club every year? The club has been at its present location since the late 1950’s, prior to that it played at 3 other locations, ‘The Level’ (behind where Castleowen is), The Square and the other was where the houses in Castle Close now occupy. The club, with over 500 members from children to senior citizens, is not alone the biggest but is also the oldest institution in the Parish serving the community for the last 130 years. From just being a boggy field in the ‘50’s the club has over the years invested both money and hard work by a lot of people in upgrading the pitch to it now being one of the best surfaces in the county.

‘Go-Games’ for children up to 11 years, ‘Cul Camps’ in the summer and ‘Easter Camps’ at the Easter holidays, for boys and girls. The club caters for boys in their teenage years, fielding teams in and football from under 12 up to the minor grade. The adults are well catered for with teams from under 21 right up to intermediate level.

Whenever one passes by the pitch isn’t it great to see so many children having fun in a safe environment location at the heart of the community. The G.A.A. club itself has over 30 teams actively playing hurling and football from under 8 up to our adult teams. While teams start formally at under 8 the club has activities every Saturday morning for all children. There are so many activities organised by the club during the year for children of all ages. You ha ve Parish leagues in both Hurling and Football,

I was shocked when I was informed at how many people it takes to run the club every year. It takes a staggering 115 people to run all the Club’s activities each year, all I might add are volunteers. Is this not community service at its best? These are coaches, mentors, officers, grounds personnel, and members who all help out at big events in the pitch like matches and car boot sales.

The boost to the local economy that these matches, and the Car Boot Sales which are held every Bank Holiday Monday, is much bigger than people realise, and is greatly appreciated by the local businesses. Page 29:Layout 1 11/11/13 10:16 PM Page 1

The club complex is in constant demand with many organisations making use of it such as the I.C.A. Active Retirement Group, various discipline’s of dancing classes, and ‘45 Card Drives’. The Blarney Cycling Club uses it as their base for big race events, as does the Athletics club for their half marathon. It was also the venue for the hosting of the T.V. Show ‘Dirty Old Town’. What may not be widely known is that it was the G.A.A. club who donated the In order for the club to keep up with the increased demand for the use of its facilities additional ground was site to the Blarney Scouting urgently required. The club was delighted that together with the Coursing Club an extra full size pitch and a Troop for the building of their training area was developed over the last 2 years. It is great to see in a place like Blarney that organisations can hall back in the early 1980’s. co-operate so well in achieving amenities for the community. Who pays for all this to happen? And how much does it all cost? The G.A.A. while being a national organisation, each club is responsible for its own finances. The main sources of income are the fees that come from membership, and the various fundraising events that the club undertakes. The club does however get grant aided from the Munster Council for capital projects that are completed at the complex Because of the energy of its members and the massive support it gets from the local community all the developments that have taken place over the last few years have been paid for in full. With this milestone achieved the club is now ready to further enhance its facilities over the coming years and knows that with the continued support of the greater community they can continue serving the people of Blarney for another 130 years. 32 | Muskerry News ‘Community Connect’ Handyman Service Scary Stuff at St. Lachteens It’s that timeoffers of year Chimney again when the clocks Cleaning change and service we like to see the open fires burning or take advantage of the solid fuel stove to heat our homes. Ensuring our homes remain ‘winter fire safe’ is important, especially for older people who may have mobility problems or spend more time in the home. A Department of Environment Report recommends cleaning your chimney/flue twice each year as it also helps to maintain efficiency when using an appliance with a boiler. The report also recommends that the appliance itself (back boiler or stove) should be cleaned as often as twice weekly, especially if bituminous smoky coal is used as it produces slag deposits which stick to the boiler surfaces and reduce efficiency as a result of the burning process. Cleaning your chimney will generally take an hour cost very little and with varying fees for attendance by Fire Brigades at chimney fires, the charge of 12 per hour for older people to use this handyman service seems very reasonable. It is also advisable to take advantage of this service to fit your carbon monoxide or smoke alarm if you don’t have these already fitted. The handyman will also check your existing smoke alarm to ensure it still works. To book the handyman contact Mary at 025 33411 or email [email protected]

34 | Muskerry News Dental Matters Carolyn Barry Murphy BDS with Onslow Gardens Dental Practice Gum Disease You may be aware that gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss today, but did you know that gum disease is linked to heart disease and strokes, pregnancy problems such as low birth weight, diabetes and respiratory disease? It may be more serious than you think. Gum disease is inflammation of the tissues which support the teeth and attach them to the jaw. It arises when plaque and tartar build up on the teeth. Plaque can be removed with careful toothbrushing and flossin g. Tartar forms when plaque is hardened by minerals such as calcium present in saliva. Tartar has to be removed professionally by your dentist or hygienist. Smoking also has a very harmful effect on the gums. Every smoker has gum disease but some smokers are affected worse than others. You may not notice the gum disease until it is quite advanced. Therefore, it is important to visit your dentist regularly and to be aware of the following signs: red swollen gums, bleeding gums , bad breath, bad taste, gum recession, teeth starting to drift apart, teeth starting to loosen. What can you do to help prevent/treat gum disease? Thoroughly and gently brush your teeth and gums for 2 to 4 minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Clean between the teeth with floss or interdental toothbrushes. Visit your dentist regularly for a check up and a professional clean to remove plaque and tartar. At your next visit, why not ask your dentist or hygienist how best to keep your teeth clean? It could save your teeth and improve your health! Mr O’Grady, who is a full time local representative, previously stood in Cork North West as the party candidate in the 44 North Main Street, Cork. 2011 General Election polling almost 3,500 first preference votes. Speaking after his selection at a Pre Christmas convention held in the Oriel House Hotel Mr O’Grady said, “This will be an extremely important local election next May. The people will have a chance to strike a blow against the regime of austerity, the consensus for cuts and the marginalisation of those struggling Stock Clearout financially in our community. Sinn Féin is the only credible alternative to the austerity politics of Fine Gael, Huge Clearout of Fianna Fáil and Labour. These parties are firmly wedded to policies that marginalise the vulnerable in society and protect the wealthy elite. Electing Sinn Féin representatives at local government level next May will hel p turn the tide Casual Jackets against the golden circle and their political cronies who have brought this state to its knees. Knitwear Local Government in this state has become dysfunctional due to the action of central government over the years. It has been stripped of powers and suffocated by a lack of funding. This has not only crippled local authorities and alienated Shirts communities but it has also had a major effect on the functioning of the Dail as TDs are forced to spend an inordinate amount of time o n ‘parish pump’ politics Prior to Christmas neglecting their role as legislators. Sinn Feins policy document ‘Towards a New Republic’ spells out in a clear, deliveries positive and practical way the changes we wish to see in Local Government. A clear distinction between the role of the TD and local Cllr needs to be brought about. How can we do this? The answer lies in transferring more powers to Local Government, extending local democracy instead of restricting it, and reforming how the Dáil does its business. Local Government structures must be aimed at empowering people and giving local communities the opportunity to participate directly in decisions that affect them, their families and their neighbours. This can be done by giving Local Authorities more power and responsibility over planning, housing, education, employment, social services, environment, transportation, water services and waste management. Needless to say none of this can happen without sustainabl e funding and the funding required to carry out these functions must be provided by central government until the creation of local powers of taxation. The Council of Europe Report on ‘Local Democracy in Ireland’ issued this week agrees substantially with Sinn Féin on these points and this is to be welcomed. Suit Deal There is much more in ‘Towards A New Republic’ on the expanding role that Local Government could play in the day to day lives of local communities. Suffice it to say that I, as a Sinn Féin candidate, have a clear vision of how I want to see Local Government develop. with Local councils must play a bigger part in standing up to the coercive politics coming from this coalition. There is a dire need for Councillors who will reject a political agenda that is bailing out banks with one hand and decimating local services with the other. The recent Budget attack on the elderly, the under 25s, Shirt medical card holders, expectant mothers and bereaved people as well as the huge levels of unemployment and emigration are devastating our local communities. We believe local councils can be real vehicles for political change but that entirely depends on who is elected. We need leadership that is based on defending the well-being of ordinary families. Tie & Strengthening Sinn Féin's representation on Cork County Council would give a voice to the thousands who feel abandoned by the political elites.
