  • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

  • The Structure of Repetition in the Cinema: Three Hollywood Genres
The Structure of Repetition in the Cinema: Three Hollywood Genres Inbar Shaham Open University of Israel, Department of Literature, Language, and the Arts Abstract The structure of repetition, as Meir Sternberg (1978) defines it, consists in the repeated presentation of a fabulaic event along the text continuum. It has three types of component members: (1) forecast (e.g., command, scenario); (2) enactment (represent- ing the forecast’s objective realization, as communicated by an authorized narrator); and (3) report (about an enactment, a forecast, or another report, all delivered by some character). This research examines the repetition structure in cinematic narrative: specifically, in heist, adventure, and military operation films. Throughout, the argu- ment proceeds with special reference to these genres, as well as to the cinema’s medium, practice, and conventions in general, often citing literary parallels or precedents for comparison. It examines the different elements that serve to (re)compose the repetition structure for certain ends; the types of member brought together within the structure; their size, number, forms of transmission, order of appearance, representational pro- portion, and possible interrelations (overlap, partial overlap, contradiction, expansion or summary of a previous member). Above all, the analysis relates these interplays themselves to the structure’s functions at the level of plot, meaning, and rhetoric, notably including their generic variations, as exemplified by the three focal genres. This article is based on parts of my doctoral dissertation, “Repetition Structure in the Cinema: From Communicational Exigency to Poetic Device” (Tel Aviv University, 2010). For details, see the appendix. I would like to thank Meir Sternberg for his generous and invaluable guid- ance in all stages of this research, from a BA seminar through an MA thesis and a PhD dissertation to this present publication.

Eiko Kadono lost her mother when she was fve. Be- fore long the Pacifc War started, so she had to be evacuated to the northern side of Japan at 10 years old. The experience of war as a child is at the root of Kadono’s deep commitment to peace and hapiness. She studied American literature at Waseda University, after graduation she worked at a publisher. After marriage she accompanied her hasband to Brazil and lived in San Paulo for two years. On the long voyage to and from Brazil, she was able to broaden her knowledge about the varied countries. These experiences brought up her curious and multicultural attitude toward creative activity. Her frst book was published in 1970, since then she pub- lished about 250 books, and these were translated into 10 languages. Kadono says “to start reading a book is like opening a door to a different world. It doesn’t close at the end of the story, another door is always wait- ing there to be opened. People will start to look at the world in a different way after reading a story, and it’s the beginning in a sense. And I think that is the true pleasure of reading.

FINDING THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD: MEIJI INTELLECTUALS AND THE JAPANESE CONSTRUCTION OF AN EAST-WEST BINARY 1868-1912 BY MASAKO NOHARA RACEL Under the Direction of Douglas R. Reynolds ABSTRACT The Meiji era (1868-1912) in Japanese history was characterized by the extensive adoption of Western institutions, technology, and customs. The dramatic changes that took place caused the era’s intellectuals to ponder Japan's position within the larger global context. The East-West binary was a particularly important part of the discourse as the intellectuals analyzed and criticized the current state of affairs and offered their visions of Japan’s future. This dissertation examines five Meiji intellectuals who had very different orientations and agendas: Fukuzawa Yukichi, an influential philosopher and political theorist; Shimoda Utako, a pioneer of women's education; Uchimura Kanzō, a Christian leader; Okakura Kakuzō, an art critic; and Kōtoku Shūsui, a socialist.

Rani Usman, Ahmad Fauzan, Azman Sulaiman 1,2,3Postgraduate Islamic Communication and Broadcasting Study Program of UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract. Audio-visual or film is one of the strategic means of intercultural communication. Films are often used as a medium of propaganda for partisan and partial political interests, leading to misunderstandings of a culture. The destruction of a nation's cultural meanings and values always involves audio-visual media to create psychological effects in building opinion and mobilizing the masses. Iran and its culture are the victims of world misunderstanding. However, the films directed by Iranian filmmakers have opened a „cultural dialogue‟ with dignity and in an artistic manner. This study aimed to examine Iranian cultural communication patterns through cinema and identify Iranian cultural symbols that influence cultural communication. This research used Symbol and Value Theory. Symbols and values influence political and cultural campaigns. This research employed the Gestalt method that involved descriptive coding of sentences and images and recording of contents. Through Gestalt, we can interpret the meaning and behavior displayed by humans in certain situations.

We are proud to reach this quarter-century landmark of introducing Washington, DC to the consistently Photo: Chad Evans Wyatt Chad Evans Photo: provocative and innovative films of international cinema. Filmmakers are storytellers — and what rich stories they have to tell! This year we have an extraordinary array of films from Scandinavia to South Korea and from Italy to Iran. They all tell us stories that perplex us with life’s riddles, dazzle us with color and song, and inspire us with quiet dignity, grace, and beauty. They let us peer into the seductive world of Spanish flamenco dance, the psyche of a Corsican hotel maid hooked on chess, the innocence of Danish recruits negotiating the battlefields of Afghanistan, the longing of the young Indian woman in search of her father, the adrenaline rush of the Austrian marathoner who robs bank as a hobby — and that’s just a small taste of the richness and variety of this year’s films! Once again, I would like to thank the many dedicated people who have shared their time and talents with Filmfest DC. The University of the District of Columbia is our major sponsor. Filmfest DC greatly appreciates the generous contributions of all our sponsors, patrons, numerous volunteers, local businesses, and diplomatic community. Their support is vital to the festival’s success and shows the enduring contribution the festival makes to our city’s cultural space.
