Catching up with the girls may normally involve coffee, cake and a gossip, but women across the UK are being urged to try something different this September and give horses a go. The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) is launching the first annual ‘Give Horses a Go’ day on 13 September 2015 – giving people the chance to get closer to horses and try riding for free – so there’s no better time to discover all that a trip to the stables has to offer. Endorsed by Sport England, under their popular This Girl Can campaign, This Girl Can Ride aims to get women aged 26-plus to try something horsey. Whether it’s a simple visit to a participating riding school to meet some of the horses, or trying a riding lesson, the campaign kicks off with a national ‘Give Horses a Go’ day on 13 September. And if you have ridden before, now might be the time to get back into the saddle – the Give Horses a Go days are open to returning riders as well as new ones.

More than 40 approved riding LEWISHARDING LTD schools are taking part, each offering free sessions. You don’t need lots of kit, just sensible trousers and a pair of boots or Highlights from Hickstead shoes with a small heel.

THE FINAL of the hotly contested International Stairway Series took place in the Grand Ring at the NAEC in Stoneleigh, as part of the British Showjumping National Championships in August. The sun shone down as 32 riders stepped forward to tackle the imposing course in a bid to claim the coveted title. The tension was high as competitors stepped forward all hoping to either win the Final and take the title of National Champion or add to their points tally on the International Stairway League in the hope of topping the leader board and securing the series title. The course was challenging and put both horses and riders to the test, with only five riders managing to jump a clear first round. Moving on to the jump-off was Lance Whitehouse riding VIK II, Clark Glasgow riding Fleur De L’Aube, Robert Bewis riding Courtney Z, Jonathan Buxton riding High Offley Arturos Catch and David McPherson riding Gloria Van Zuuthoeve. First to go was Jonathan Buxton, who produced a quick round but knocked a rail. The following rounds saw David McPherson opting to retire and Lance Whitehouse having a rail down. Only two riders managed the elusive clear round – Robert Bevis and Clark Glasgow. Ultimately it was Clark who outperformed his competition with one of the most impressive rounds seen all week at the British Showjumping National Championships. Clark flew around the course in style to finish on a time of 50.98. Clark has only been riding Fleur De L’Aube for nine months and the combination is “still getting to know each other,” although it is less surprising when you learn that Clark is a student of showjumping legend, and National Championships Ambassador, Tim Stockdale. It was Tim who helped Clark find his winning ride Fleur De L’Aube. Tim has been with Clark every step of the way and helped him with his tactics for today’s competition.

It was Nigel Coupe that claimed this title by topping the league and claiming his HOYS invitation. This win was an achievement Nigel has been chasing for a while, as he has placed second the past two years in this class, finally landing the title this year. The win was made even more impressive by the fact that Glovers Hill has just come back from injury. “He hurt his back at Hickstead in the Queens Cup so we haven’t been able to ride him for the past two weeks. Coming here was more of a hope than an expectation,” Nigel explained. The HOYS Wild Card League, which ran across three days of the show, making it a total of three Wild Cards on offer, went to Jonathan Buxton. He had only planned to compete in two legs, after sustaining a broken back in March! Jonathan has been riding High Offley Arturos Catch for two years and it was Jonathan’s girlfriend who aquired him as a five-year-old. “We never expected him to jump these classes. Every time we ask him a question he has come up with the answer. He’s got a heart of gold.”

“I do it all on my own too. I have had my HGV licence since I was 18, but now there is the tachograph and a limit on drivers’ hours, so I have had to learn a lot of new rules and regulations. If I get stopped, I don’t want William to get a huge fine because I’ve gone over my hours or something like that. “I never had the need to know about that stuff before this job. They’re the things that most people don’t think about. I’ve had to learn so much.”

Maintaining standards When she’s at home, she has overall responsibility for a team of nine on the yard, caring for the top-level horses and the youngsters, plus more than 75 horses at the adjoining farm. “On a typical day at home everyone starts work at seven and mucks out. William’s always there at seven too, and he’ll ride two or three horses before breakfast. “I will plan with William what he’s going to ride that day too. He doesn’t actually ride [Billy] Congo and [Billy] Angelo that often – he looks at the young ones. He assesses them and the way they have been ridden, helping to make sure each horse reaches its full potential. “At around 10 o’clock I’ll help ride some of the young horses and we do a lot of hacking and fitness work, including galloping, so I will have made a plan with him about which ones I’m going to make a start with. I’ll also have a couple of young ones to ride in the afternoon. “William will usually ask some of my colleagues for some horses to be brought in for loose jumping. I’ll generally assist by writing down the score and any comments about each horse and we tend to do about 10 horses at any one time. “It’s really diverse. I work with everything from the international horses to the youngsters. I don’t think everyone could say that.” Hannah credits much of her knowledge to her predecessor, whom she worked alongside for two years. “She taught me an awful lot without me realising at the time. A lot of the things I do now are because of the way she did them. The horses were immaculate and I want to keep it like that. Now I want to help other people to achieve that standard, especially if they come to the yard. They do it the way I do it and they know my routine.”

Belle of the ball With so much dedication, it’s not hard to see why Hannah was the winner of the 2014 Top Level Grooms Award at the British Showjumping Awards Ball – although Hannah says that she was really surprised to be singled out. www.britishshowjumping.co.uk British Showjumping Magazine Issue 5 2015 25 AWARD WINNER

“I didn’t know about the award much before the ball, so when William asked me if I was going, I said no. It was then that he told me I had been nominated for an award and I had to go! “It’s pretty cool. To be told you’ve done a good job is really nice. It really meant a lot to me. I’ve been in my job a long time and I like to think I try to learn the best way of doing things on the yard. “I’ve loved every year I’ve been “I’m sure lots of other grooms would like to win it too. I don’t think people really realise here and it’s a job that I would what grooms do. From the plaiting of the tail to booting them up and actually training the horse, it takes time, management and organisation. The award is recognition of that.” Having achieved so much by the age of just 27, it might seem like Hannah has a plan for where she’d like her career to go – but her past experience has meant she takes a more fluid view of the situation. “I don’t know what I want to do after this,” she says. “I’ll probably do more riding, because I like producing the young horses. My boyfriend also rides, so I’d like to do something with him in future too. “That said, I have kept my options open because you never know what’s going to happen or where life’s going to take you – I never ever envisaged I would be doing this! “I haven’t regretted a single thing that I’ve done with William though. I’ve loved every year I’ve been here and it’s a profession that I would recommend to anybody that wants to work with horses.”

For someone who played a pivotal role masterminding and delivering the soar away success story that was London 2012, it is wholly appropriate that Nicky Roche CBE’s career portfolio comfortably reaches gold medal standard. Her lengthy and rewarding career in the Civil Service saw her work at various stages for political giants such as Margaret Thatcher and Norman Tebbit, so it should therefore come as no surprise that Roche’s exploits in the sporting field have included such iconic events as an Olympic Games and the Tour de France. And that same level of passion and commitment is something that she prides herself on in what she describes as “my main hobby” – horse riding. While in school and then at university, Roche was a fine runner – cross-country proved a particular strength – while other disciplines like football and rowing were also on her busy sporting agenda, but horses and riding now take up a considerable part of her busy and active lifestyle, whether as an active participant or through filling her role as a non-executive director on the British Showjumping Board. “It really is a priority for me,” she said. “Even when I was working on the Olympics, I always kept my riding up. I remember the day after the London 2012 opening ceremony, I had worked very late the previous evening and then I was on an early shift. After I got home about two o’clock in the afternoon, the first thing I did was go off to the stables, which was to ride two or three times a week, and it has “I joined the Civil Service in 1979, which fantastic, mucking in with everyone. ANDY BULMER Rider events in Austria

I am writing to you as I return from an emotional rollercoaster of a week at the Children, Junior and Young Rider European Championships in Austria. It was an amazing experience! All three Championships took place at the same venue, with British teams taking part in all three categories – so there were lots of British riders and their families in Europe! And while there is a separate report of the event on page 17, I couldn’t fail to mention it in my column – especially because the Children’s team [India Bussey, Hallie Lunn, Oliver Fletcher and Lottie Tutt] won team silver. The Junior team that I was on, alongside Fay Adams, Robert Murphy and Harry Charles, also won team bronze, while Harry put in an amazing performance to take an individual silver medal and I took individual bronze. The most unlucky team were the Young Riders [Chloe Aston, Chloe Winchester, Jake Saywell and Emma O’Dwyer], who narrowly missed out I have never experienced on a podium position and finished fourth. “Winning the team gold was amazing and it was so nice to be a part of such a great team. We’d aimed for the Championships all year and it didn’t really sink in what we had achieved for a few days. Tixylix will have a bit of a break now before Horse of the Year Show and then we will do a few international shows towards the end of the year. She’s won seven medals now; two with me and Zoe Adams and three with Jessica Mendoza. She’s incredible and it’s a privilege to ride her” Jodie Hall McAteer, Pony Team

The courses were a true Championship test and I was really proud of my teams, both of which dealt with the pressure brilliantly! Special mentions go to Oliver Fletcher, who jumped double-clear just when needed, and Harry Charles, who did the same to clinch silver and very nearly individual gold. “Giving your all to the My last word goes to Millie. travelling horses use quite a lot of muscle power to balance, with 1 hour travelling generally regarded to be equivalent to 20 minutes work. Such muscle work will keep the horse warm, but if you are worried about the horse getting cold then putting a rug on is a much healthier option than closing the windows. On long journeys most people sensibly give their horses access to forage. The horse’s nose is very close to this source of dust so it is vitally important to feed dust-free forage or thoroughly steam the hay before feeding. Soaking or partial steaming (done in a bin) Avoid coughing dampens the airborne particles but leaves live microorganisms in the hay and these quickly multiply in the warm air in a lorry or trailer, compromising the hygienic quality of the forage.
