Stykket de fremfører er skrevet til dem av Hollywood- komponist James Horner. I sommer inngikk stjernesøskenparet Mari Silje og Håkon Samuelsen en langsiktig eksklusiv albumavtale med Mercury Classics. Denne uken, torsdag 13. og fredag 14. november, fremfører de for første gang verket i Philharmonic Hall i Liverpool. Dette blir verdenspremieren på bestillingsverket ’’Pas de deux’’ av den legendariske Hollywood-komponisten James Horner, som blant annet står bak filmene Titanic, Braveheart og Avatar. Verket fremføres med Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra og dirigent Vasily Petrenko på orkesterets 175-års jubileum og åpningskonsert i deres nyrenoverte konserthus. Opptak sendes på Classic FM i Storbritannia, og estimeres til å nå 8 mill. lyttere. Produsent for albumet er Simon Rhodes (kjent fra Skyfall, Harry Potter og Avatar samt Grammy-vinnenende album med Berlin Philharmonikerne). Albumet gis ut på Mercury Classics, Universal Music Group, våren 2015. Presse som The Times, The Independent, The Guardian, Liverpool Echo og BBC Radio er noen av mediene som vil være til stede under premieren. 17-03-2015 15:15 CET Oscar-komponist James Horner i samarbeid med norsk stjernesøskenpar Den Oscar-vinnende kompinisten James Horner har blitt lokket vekk fra storskjermen og tilbake til konserthallen, takket være det norske stjernesøskenparet Mari og Håkon Samuelsen. Sammen har de overbevist Horner om å skrive hans første konsertstykke på over 30 år - en konsert for violin, cello og orkester kalt "Pas de Deux". Opptaket fra verdensremieren i Liverpool i November kommer på deres debutalbum som slippes på Mercury Classic 25. mai 2015. Horner er tidligere kjent for stykker som Titanic, Braveheart og Avatar, og dette er det første verket komponisten har skrevet for fiolin og cello, samt det første bestillingsverket i rekken fra Mari Silje og Håkon Samuelsen. Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017).

James Horner ‘Take her to sea Mr Murdoch’ from Titanic (For Unit 6: Further Musical Understanding) Background information and Performance Circumstances • James Horner (born 1953) is one of America’s foremost Film composers. • His score for Titanic won two academy awards (for best dramatic score and best song), and he has won many other awards for his work. • Horner has had a long working relationship with the director James Cameron, who made both Titanic and Avatar, to date two of the highest-grossing films in the history of cinema. • Other scores include A Beautiful Mind, Cocoon and Aliens. • Horner was ‘classically’ trained initially in California and at then at the Royal College of Music, London. • Horner included Celtic elements in this score, perhaps to reflect the Irish passengers in steerage class, from whom the Leonardo di Caprio character is drawn. Performing forces and their handling • Titanic uses a large symphony orchestra, augmented by a real choir and by synthetic vocal sounds. o Double woodwind, (including the darker sounding A clarinet), plus double bassoon. o 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones and tuba, i.e. a conventional symphonic brass section. o Timpani, suspended cymbal, bass drum, tubular bells, bell tree, side drum, glockenspiel, sleigh bells. o 2 harps, piano and synthesiser (voice sound). o SATB choir. o Strings. • Traditional symphonic/Romantic treatment of the orchestra with much doubling of parts. • Few uses of solo timbres • Middle and lower ranges of instruments are favoured, with little above the stave for either Flute or Violins 1-3 Imitative opening. • Doubling of lines across strings/wind/SATB in each part.

Likewise, reflective and introspective moments in film often align with important plot points. Separating music and dialogue from the rhythms of the image, these moments suspend time, creating a distinct temporality for the character(s) and the viewer to observe the past and the present in juxtaposition. The music of film composer Thomas Newman brings to life some of the most beautiful reflective and introspective moments in cinema. In this thesis, I approach Newman’s understudied, but highly successful film scores from narrative, musical, and audiovisual perspectives.
