She founded the Young Jean Lee's Theatre Company in 2003 where she produced a number of her own plays. She can be classified as a "1.5 generation" Asian American playwright who has added her particular voice about diasporic Asian woman’s issues to American theatre. Her creative and artistic interests were not limited to academic reading and writing, but expanded to live theatre and performance. Her works thematically involve the daily issues and interaction among contemporary American people. In her theatrical works, Young Jean Lee challenges the audience to rethink the nature of race or gender stereotypes in the USA through her trajectory of reconsidering these stereotypes. This thesis focuses on two of her most recent and controversial works, Songs of the Dragons Flying to Heaven (2006) and The Shipment (2008). Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of Asian American theatre history and specifically situates Lee’s work within a context of Korean American playwrights since 1990s where they appeared for the first time in any significant number. The next two chapters analyze Lee's multiple narratives of race, culture, and diaspora, and her attempt to deconstruct and explode ever present and recycled stereotypes of Asian Americans and African Americans.

    2019 Creative Change Retreat Participant Bios: phillip agnew co-founded the Dream Defenders in 2012 after the murder of Trayvon Martin and has been dubbed “one of this generation’s leading voices.” He has been recognized by both EBONY magazine and The Root as one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the nation. In 2018 he transitioned from his role as co-director of the Dream Defenders and now travels the country training and organizing where “the movement” hasn’t touched. He is the co-founder of Miami’s Smoke Signals Studio—a community-based radical artistic space—with his partner, poet Aja Monet. Smoke Signals Studio is a space where those invested in using art, sound, and music as a meeting place for transformation and liberation can come to create together. He is a nationally recognized educator, strategist, trainer, speaker, and cultural critic and was a featured speaker at TEDxWomen and SXSW in 2019. Jouelzy Baker curates discussions to encourage women of color as they define their own success stories, emboldening them to push back against harmful social norms. She has cultivated a #SmartBrownGirl movement that provides a safe space to tackle complex cultural issues through dialogue that meets at the intersection of pop culture and political history. Marya Bangee is the Executive Director of Harness, an organization started by America Ferrera, Wilmer Valderrama, and Ryan Piers Williams to center the stories of underrepresented communities in Hollywood. He is the Founder and Co-Artistic Director of the San Francisco performance company Cultural Odyssey. He is also Artistic Director of the legendary world music/jazz ensemble THE PYRAMIDS. In addition, Mr. Ackamoor is also a curator with the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where he produces the New Performance in Black Theater Series as an integral part of the Festival. Since 1993 Idris has presented a who’s who of the African American performing arts including the late Sekou Sundiata, Roger Guenveur Smith, Ntozake Shange, Pearl Cleage, Will Power, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, and many others. Stella Adelman Theater and Adult Program Director, Dance Brigade's Dance Mission Theater A San Francisco native, Stella Adelman holds a B.A. in World Arts and Cultures from UCLA, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and was awarded a Gold Shield Arts Scholarship.
