The extensive timelines have been broken into ten stages, drawing attention to a number of periods and reasons in the history of those eras for the unique experience of vernacular liturgy and the issues connected with it in the Western Catholic Church of our time. The role and function of International Committee of English in the Liturgy (ICEL) over its forty year existence still has a major impact on the way we worship in English. This article deals with the restructuring of ICEL which had been the centre of much controversy in recent years and now operates under different protocols.

  • 1 18 May 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Dear Brothers And
18 May 2020 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Dear Brothers and Sisters in Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica, Here we stand in the midst of the Easter season. In the Gospel we recently heard at the Eucharist, Jesus tells his disciples in the Last Supper Discourse that he bestows upon them a peace that is not like any other. “Peace, I leave with you; my peace I bestow upon you. Not as the world gives it, do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid” (Jn 14:27). The Easter peace which Jesus gives is not a freedom from anxiety, but a freedom to live amid anxious time with faith in God’s presence, and trust in ways that will open up a manner to face and live into the future. That is a great encouragement to us in this moment of anxiety and insecurity. These words of Jesus are true sources of inspiration and support to us. Despite the fears and worries, there is something quietly stirring in the hearts of believers; the Holy Spirit within us guides us in ways that are so simple and good, so touching and transforming. It is a “peace” that is subtle and quiet, humble and gracious, wise, noble, and advantageous. This is the mysterious Easter peace that Christ left to us, his Benedictine disciples, and to all who follow the Gospel message. How easy it is to name the challenges that have come our way with this pandemic: fear for the present moment, unexpected death, uncertainty about the future, living with an invisible enemy, financial pressures, distance from loved ones, praying in unfamiliar ways, and many more challenges.

  • The Biblical Dimension of Paul Vi's Liturgical Vision
ORGAN OF THE ROMAN THEOLOGICAL FORUM NO. 154 September 2011 PART I: POPE PAUL’S GENERAL APPROACH TO SCRIPTURE THE BIBLICAL DIMENSION OF PAUL VI’S LITURGICAL VISION by Brian W. Harrison It is probably no exaggeration to state that of all the ways in which Paul VI hoped to see the Church’s life enriched still further by Sacred Scripture, its more abundant, fruitful and prominent role in the liturgy was closest of all to his heart. Even before his election to the papacy, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini made clear his position on this matter: his personal interest in Scripture seems to have been more pastoral and spiritual than academic and doctrinal. As we will see in another article, he was not especially anxious that Vatican II, which had been called as a pastoral Council, should pronounce itself in dogmatic terms in regard to matters of biblical exegesis. In response to the Antepreparatory Commission’s request for submissions from all the Church’s prelates and leading institutions as to what the Council should discuss, Montini sent in an extensive dossier, divided into several sections according to theme. Scripture was not even mentioned in his suggestions under the heading “Doctrine,”1 and in fact nowhere are there any suggestions regarding matters of biblical interpretation or exegesis.
