  • Commissioned Orchestral Version of Jonathan Dove’S Mansfield Park, Commemorating the 200Th Anniversary of the Death of Jane Austen
The Grange Festival announces the world premiere of a specially- commissioned orchestral version of Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September 2017 The Grange Festival’s Artistic Director Michael Chance is delighted to announce the world premiere staging of a new orchestral version of Mansfield Park, the critically-acclaimed chamber opera by composer Jonathan Dove and librettist Alasdair Middleton, in September 2017. This production of Mansfield Park puts down a firm marker for The Grange Festival’s desire to extend its work outside the festival season. The Grange Festival’s inaugural summer season, 7 June-9 July 2017, includes brand new productions of Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, Bizet’s Carmen, Britten’s Albert Herring, as well as a performance of Verdi’s Requiem and an evening devoted to the music of Rodgers & Hammerstein and Rodgers & Hart with the John Wilson Orchestra. Mansfield Park, in September, is a welcome addition to the year, and the first world premiere of specially-commissioned work to take place at The Grange. This newly-orchestrated version of Mansfield Park was commissioned from Jonathan Dove by The Grange Festival to celebrate the serendipity of two significant milestones for Hampshire occurring in 2017: the 200th anniversary of the death of Austen, and the inaugural season of The Grange Festival in the heart of the county with what promises to be a highly entertaining musical staging of one of her best-loved novels. Mansfield Park was originally written by Jonathan Dove to a libretto by Alasdair Middleton based on the novel by Jane Austen for a cast of ten singers with four hands at a single piano.

  • Royal Hospital School Welcome to at the Music
September 2019 – June 2020 music at the royal hospital school welcome to music the at Music at RHS hospital school royal It is my pleasure to share this year’s RHS music programme which again reflects the ambition and talent of our Music Department and pupils. For those who have experienced a chapel service at RHS or witnessed the School’s marching band on Divisions, you will have some appreciation of how important music is to the pupils and to the key events in the school year. The positive benefits of music are well-documented - 2019 from improving well-being and bolstering the immune system, to developing co-ordination. For many of our / pupils it is a valuable counterbalance to the pressures 20 of work and a chance to build friendships through the collaborative nature of making music. This year the programme looks as rich as it is broad, providing opportunities not only for members of the School but also for wider participation. Highlights this year include the welcome return of the award-winning singer Matt Ford, to sing with the Chris Ingham Trio and the RHS Big Band. The joint concert with the British Army Band and the RHS Concert Band in February should also raise the roof! There is also a performance of Verdi’s Requiem with the RHS Chapel Choir, Holbrook Choral Society and the Ipswich Choral Society. Later in the year we present a semi-staged performance of one of the greatest English operas ever written, Dido and Aeneas; and an afternoon of fun and laughter with our annual Come and Sing event, featuring songs from a number of Disney classics.

  • Georgie Fame
Georgie Fame Born on 26th June 1943 in the industrial town of Leigh, Lancashire, his interest in music grew from family entertainment “sessions” at home and musical evenings in the church hall across the street, where his father played in an amateur dance band. Although he took piano lessons for a short time at the age of seven, it wasn’t until the advent of rock’n’roll on radio during the mid-fifties that young Georgie began to take the family piano seriously. Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard were among his catalysts. Upon leaving school, shortly after his fifteenth birthday, he followed the family tradition and took a job as an apprentice cotton weaver in one of the many local mills. Leisure time, however, was spent playing piano in various pubs and with a local group, “The Dominoes”. In July 1959, at a summer holiday camp, Georgie was spotted by Rory Blackwell, the resident rock’n’roll bandleader, who offered the young singer/pianist a full time job. Goodbye, weaving shed. Rory and the Blackjacks departed for London, their hometown, when the summer season ended prematurely and Georgie went with them. The promised glamorous work did not materialise and the band broke up, but the determined young man from Leigh eventually took up a solo residency at The Essex Arms pub in London’s Dockland, where the kindly landlord provided a room to sleep in. In October of that year, the Marty Wilde Show was performing at the Lewisham Gaumont and Rory Blackwell arranged for Georgie to audition “live” for impressario Larry Parnes.
