Buckley wins two CIS Awards Andrew Buckley, star QB for the University of Calgary Dinosaurs, pulled off a difficult double at the 2014 CIS Awards winning both the Hec Crighton Award as the MVP of CIS Football but also the Russ Jackson Award for Outstanding Academics and Citizenship. Buckley, a graduate of Rundle College in Calgary and 2010 Senior Bowl player, becomes the fourth Dino to www.footballalberta.ab.ca capture the Hec Crighton, following quarterback Greg Vavra (1983), receiver Don Blair (1995) and pivot Erik Glavic (2009). The Russ Jackson honour, meanwhile, is the second straight for Buckley and also the fourth for the University of Calgary after wins by Elio Geremia in 1987 and Lincoln Blumell in 2002. The 6-foot, 201-pound Buckley was at the controls of the nation’s most potent offence in 2014, leading the Dinos to school records in points, touchdowns, and total offence – and they led the nation in all three cate- gories. They became the first team in Canada West history to break the 5,000-yard mark in total offence, adding 51 touchdowns and 419 points to their gaudy statistics totals. Buckley was in the centre of it all. His surgical passing led to a 64.3 completion percentage, 2,175 passing yards, and 18 touchdowns through the air, and he threw fewer interceptions than any other starting quar- terback in Canada West, boasting an incredible 4.5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. And just as he did it through the air, Buckley did it with his legs as well. He finished fifth in Canada West in rushing with 510 yards, averaging nearly 64 per game. His yards-per-carry average was the best in Canada at 10.6, and he ran for more yards than any other quarterback in the country this season. He also scored 10 rushing touchdowns – the second-highest total among all players in CIS. And he did it all despite having to fight for his position in training camp, where he beat out the 2012 Canada West MVP, Eric Dzwilewski, for the starting job. Perhaps most impressively, Buckley did all that while playing the equivalent of just 6.25 games on the sea- son after the Dinos built up early leads in many of their contests en route to a 6-2 record and the No. 2 na- tional ranking for all but the final two Top 10 polls of the season. Away from the field, Buckley is an honours student in the Faculty of Kinesiology and hopes to follow his fa- ther's footsteps into a career in orthopedic surgery following graduation. A three-time Academic All- Canadian in the classroom, he has been involved in several research studies, including one looking at a new method to reduce stiffness of the elbow joint by testing difference trial doses of a promising drug. The findings of this study were presented in 2014 at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (Tampa, Fla.) and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (Montreal). Buckley has always made it a priority to give back to his school, his community, and other great causes. He volunteers with Alberta Health Services, where he is paired with two elderly Alzheimer's patients, providing companionship for three hours per week as well as relief for full-time caregivers. He embarked on a 10-day humanitarian trip to Guatemala to build efficient wood-burning stoves to replace dangerous open fires within homes. Background: The BLG Awards Ceremony honours Canadian university athletes and promotes post-graduate studies across the country. Understanding the financial constraints on athletics programs, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) in conjunction with U SPORTS (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport – CIS), established these awards to assist in focusing attention on the importance of athletics at Canadian universities and to showcase the exceptional student athletes in Canada. The Canadian Athletic The CAF is a non-profit board established to administer the BLG Awards and protect the integrity of the selection process. Foundation (CAF): The Board of Trustees consists of 18 members from five Canadian cities representing several major corporations. Awards Criteria: Each of the 56 U SPORTS universities nominates one male and one female Athlete of the Year. One male and one female are then selected from each of the four U SPORTS conferences: Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA), Ontario University Athletics (OUA), Réseau du sport etudiant du Quebec (RSEQ), and Atlantic University Sport (AUS). To be eligible for a BLG Award, nominees must meet the following requirements: • Must have participated in a U SPORTS-sanctioned sport for a minimum period of two years (including the current year of nomination); • Must be in a course of study leading to their first undergraduate degree or graduate program; • Must be the university’s Athlete of the Year or runner-up; and • Cannot be a previous BLG Award winner.

The goal of the league is to foster community involvement and yield a positive environment by teaching discipline, perseverance and cooperation. History of True Sport In 2001, Canada’s Federal-Provincial/Territorial Ministers responsible for sport came together to bring ethics and respectful conduct back into the way Canadians play and compete. They believed that damaging practices—cheating, bullying, violence, aggressive parental behaviour, and even doping—were beginning to undermine the positive impact of community sport in Canada. The first step they took in turning back this negative tide was the signing of what is now known as the London Declaration, an unprecedented affirmation of positive sporting values and principles. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport conducted a nationwide survey in 2002, which made clear the important role that sport plays in the lives of Canadians, as well as Canadians’ strong desire to uphold a model of sport that reflects and teaches positive values like fairness, inclusion, and excellence. In September of 2003, leading sports officials, sports champions, parents and kids from across Canada came together through a symposium entitled “The Sport We Want.” Several strong messages emerged from this gathering.

Dawson opened the score quickly in the first period. The Isles bounced back with 3 goals of their own in the first period (Oona Emmenegger, Andi Calderone and Audrey Gervais) to take the lead 3-1. In the second period a total of 7 goals were scored.
