Maritime Women’s Football League (MWFL) – 2016 Season The MWFL, the longest-running women’s football league in Canada, celebrated its 13th season in 2016. The Saint John Storm continued to build upon their women’s football dominance in Eastern Canada, winning their fourth straight MWFL league championship after completing a third straight undefeated campaign.

Western Women’s League (WWCFL) – 2016 Season The 2016 WWCFL marked a return to the top by Western Canada’s top football team, the Saskatoon Valkyries. The four-time WWCFL champion from 2011-2014 was upended in 2015 by the Regina Riot, and the two teams split a pair of close contests in the 2016 WWCFL regular season. But in the playoffs, Saskatoon knocked off the Riot and dominated the Western Conference champion Edmonton Storm for their fifth WWCFL championship in six years.

Canadian Women’s Football National Championship (CWFNC) – 2016 Four provincial teams were assembled to compete in the first Canadian women’s football national championship in Regina, Saskatchewan. The event was used to help showcase players competing for a spot on the Team Canada roster for the 2017 IFAF Women’s World Championships. Loaded with several players from the WWCFL, the host club, Team Saskatchewan, took down Team – powered by members of the IWFL’s Blitz – in the championship match to conclude an exciting event.

Football Xtremo Femenil (FXF) Master Ladies – 2015 Season For years, FXF has featured a “primavera” eight-player league held in the spring. But in 2015, FXF launched a “Master Ladies” league, Mexico’s first 11-player women’s football league. Five teams took part in the league’s first season, with the Vaqueros (or Cowboys) making the championship game with an undefeated record. But in the 2015 FXF Master Ladies championship game, the Storms avenged a regular season loss and upset the Vaqueros to capture the first 11-player Mexican national championship. Guam Women’s Tackle Football League (GWTFL) – 2016 Season The GWTFL expanded back up to eight teams for the first time since 2013, but no matter how many opponents they had to face, Team Legacy remained the dominant force in Guam’s top women’s football league. Team Legacy turned in an undefeated season as they cruised to their fifth straight GWTFL title in five years of existence.

British Association-Women (BAFA-W) – 2014 Diamond Series In addition to an “Opal Series” for flag football and a five-player full-contact “Sapphire Series”, BAFA started a “Diamond Series” in 2014 to familiarize Great Britain women with the 11-player game. Top players from the Sapphire Series were assembled onto two teams, patriotically named Team Blue and Team Red, and these two teams played a three-game exhibition series in 2014. Team Red won two of the three games to capture Great Britain’s first 11-player title.

British American Football Association-Women (BAFA-W) – 2015 Diamond Series The second Diamond Series again featured Team Blue against Team Red in a three-game exhibition of the 11-player format in Great Britain. This time Team Blue prevailed in the 2015 Series to even the score against Team Red. The best players from Team Blue and Team Red were then used as the foundation for the Great Britain national team that debuted at the IFAF Women’s European Championships in 2015.

British American Football Association-Women (BAFA-W) – 2016 Diamond Series For the 2016 Diamond Series, BAFA changed the two teams’ compositions to a North vs. South format. The Southern Counties Blaze, representing the best players from the south, triumphed in two games against the Northern Counties Blizzard to take the 2016 Diamond Series title.

American Football Verband Deutschland (AFVD) Ladies – 2016 Season The longest-running women’s football league in the world, Germany’s AFVD, celebrated a milestone this year with the 25th edition of their season-ending “Ladies Bowl”. In Ladies Bowl XXV, the Berlin Kobras captured their ninth German national championship with a hard-fought victory over the Mainz Golden Eagles. Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano Femenina (LNFAF) – 2015 Spain Cup After the 2015 LNFAF season, the league had a “Copa Feminine” tournament to crown what they called the “Spain Cup” champion. The 2015 Spain Cup championship was separate and distinct from the LNFAF regular season. The Barbera Rookies, who won four straight LNFAF titles from 2011-2014 before being upended in the 2015 LNFAF playoffs, rebounded to claim the 2015 Spain Cup title.

Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano Femenina (LNFAF) – 2016 Season In its sixth season, the LNFAF featured six teams in Spain’s top women’s football league. The Barbera Rookies, who had a streak of four straight league titles snapped in 2015, came into the 2016 LNFAF championship game as underdogs to the undefeated Barcelona Bufals. But the Rookies avenged a regular-season loss to the Bufals in the title game, rolling to their fifth league championship in six years.

Fédération Française de Football Américain – Féminin (FFFA-F) – 2015 Season France launched their domestic women’s football league, the FFFA-F, in 2015. The Villeneuve-St. Georges Sparkles, the country’s oldest women’s football team, were the early favorites to win the first French national championship. But they were surprisingly toppled by a Molosses team from Asnieres-sur-Seine, and Molosses advanced to hold off the Aix-en-Provence Montpellier ArgoCanes for the 2015 FFFA-F championship.

Fédération Française de Football Américain – Féminin (FFFA-F) – 2016 Season The FFFA-F expanded to ten teams for their second season, a good sign of growth for the women’s game in France. At the end of the year, however, the same two teams remained for the league championship, and in a repeat of the 2015 title game, Asnieres-sur-Seine Molosses topped the Aix-en-Provence Montpellier ArgoCanes for their second straight French national championship.

Campionato Italiano Football Americano Femminile (CIFAF) – 2016 Season The CIFAF scaled back to five teams in their fourth season, but it was still an exciting year for Italy’s top women’s football league. Defending champion One Team, based in Verona, lost their opening game to Neptunes Bologna, setting up an exciting rematch in Rose Bowl Italia IV. One Team became the first Italian team to win consecutive national titles, edging Neptunes Bologna for the second straight year in the CIFAF championship game.

Poland Women’s Football National League (PWFNL) – 2016 Season The Warsaw Sirens are Poland’s oldest women’s football team, playing in organized leagues in Germany and the Czech Republic as well as several international exhibitions. In 2016, they twice squared off against another Polish team for the first time, the Opole Vixens. Although both meetings ended with the same lopsided score, it may one day lay the foundation for a full-fledged Polish women’s football league.

Czech Republic National Tournaments (CRNT) – 2014 Season In 2014, four teams in the Czech Republic were joined by Poland’s Warsaw Sirens in two national tournaments. The Prague Harpies, the country’s most experienced team with several international friendlies under their belts, won both tournaments to claim top honors in the Czech Republic in 2014. The interest generated from these two national tournaments would result in the first women’s football league being formed in the Czech Republic the following year.

Česká Asociace Amerického Fotbalu – Ženy (CAAF-Z) – 2015 Season A new women’s football league was started in the Czech Republic in late 2015. The CAAF-Z featured three teams, including two teams from Prague. The Prague Black Cats took down the Brno Amazons in November to capture the first women’s football championship in the Czech Republic.

Suomen Amerikkalaisen Jalkapallon Liitto – Naisten (SAJL-N) – 2016 Season The SAJL-N once again featured eight teams in 2016, with seven teams from Finland as well as Russia’s St. Petersburg Valkyries. The Helsinki Roosters, who fell to their inner-city rival Demons in the SAJL-N championship game in 2015, finished the job in 2016 by defeating the Turku Trojans for the 2016 national championship of Finland.

Svenska Amerikansk Fotbollförbundet – Damer (SAFF-D) – 2016 Season The 2016 SAFF-D season was the fifth year of Sweden’s top national women’s football league, and for the first time, the league crowned a new champion. The four-time defending league champs, the Stockholm Mean Machines, were knocked out of the 2016 playoffs by the Arlanda Jets. That opened the door for the Orebro Black Knights, who suffered a shutout defeat in the previous year’s title game, to finish off an undefeated season and take home the 2016 Swedish national championship. 2016 Scandinavian Bowl: A planned Scandinavian women’s football tournament was scrapped in 2016 when Sweden withdrew over concerns regarding the structure of the contests. 2016 Pacific Rim Sun Bowl: The Japan Blaze Cats traveled to Guam for the third time to square off against a GWTFL team in the annual Pacific Rim Sun Bowl. Warsaw Sirens Exhibitions: The Warsaw Sirens are the oldest women’s football team in Poland, and like their counterparts in Prague, the Sirens have played several international exhibitions to make up for a lack of national competition.
