  • Some New Music to Turn That Frown Upside-Down
Some New Music To Turn That Frown Upside-Down Bittle Magazine | Record Reviews This June has been something of a short, hard kick in the face for all those who say there is no good new music out there, with so many great new albums that it‘s hard to know where to begin. By JOHN BITTLES. Seriously, it’s almost as if those within the music business knew about my spiralling DJ Sprinkles addiction and decided to release lots of great music to help wean me off. We have the gorgeous romantic house vibes of Glitterbug, the melancholy soul-searching of The Antlers, synth-pop gold from Lust For Youth, killer slacker rock from Happyness and so much more. And if you still aren’t excited about new music after reading this article then just play ›Midtown 120 Blues‹ on repeat. It works for me! This month we’re gonna start with one of the most surprisingly touching and exciting new albums of the last few weeks, ›Weird Little Birthday‹ , the debut album by London-based newcomers Happyness. Taking US slacker rock as a starting point the band give us 13 tracks that are, at turns, tear inducing, bittersweet, and full of that ‘We don’t give a fuck’ attitude that you’ve just got to love. ›Naked Patients‹ , the album’s second track has already been proven by a top team of scientists (me and my mate Steve) to increase a listeners ‘hip’ quota by 15 whole points! Meanwhile ›Orange Luz‹ is so laidback it almost forgets it’s there.

The global market for electronic dance music has been developing and expanding through its time and is the genre that I will be focusing on in the following paper. Looking especially at European markets, my interest is to see what new ways could be offered to Iceland’s artists, in the industry of electronic dance music, mainly dj’s and producers. The reason for this choice of subject is through interest, participation in the industry, and my beliefs that the Icelandic artists do have their voice to add, to the international nation of house music, which is one of many genres in the electronic dance music and the one that I will be focusing on in the following paper. With the use of qualitative research methods and studies from cultural economics, the work of this research has given me a broader and different perspective, and a better introduction to the culture of clubbing. Conclusions show that access would cost both time and money, and would require focus and cooperation between different parties.

Very serious stuff! Examples of composers: Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Bach, Chopin, Mendelsson, Mussorgsky, Ravel, Bizet, Grieg, Rachmaninoff,Coplin, Haydn,Strauss, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Lizst, etc. A Cappella: The opposite extreme of orchestral music is made using only the human voice as an instrument. A cappella groups are very popular on college campuses and TV singing pageantry shows. The Youtube era has ensured every popular song has an a cappella version. Beatboxing is a percussive variation. Examples: Chanticleer, Hyperpotamus, Rockapella, and various "barbershop" groups. Easy Listening: Includes polkas, waltzes, "show tunes" (from vaudeville acts and musicals), lounge music, as well as some "new age", smooth jazz, and ambient music. Some refer to these styles as "background" music or disparagingly as "elevator" music. It is never loud, but many still find it annoying! Most U.S. cities have one or more radio stations which play these kinds of music, but they are usually on AM radio, not in "stereo" sound, and not listened to by young people.

  • Sigur Rós's Heima
SIGUR RÓS’S HEIMA: An Icelandic Psychogeography Transforming Cultures eJournal, Vol. 4 No 1, April 2009 http://epress.lib.uts.edu.au/journals/TfC Tony Mitchell1 Abstract This paper examines the sonic geography of the Icelandic ambient rock group Sigur Rós with particular reference to their documentary film Heima, which documents a tour the group made of remote places in their home country. Known for causing some people to faint or burst into tears during their concerts, Sigur Rós’s music could be said to express sonically both the isolation of their Icelandic location and to induce a feeling of hermetic isolation in the listener through the climactic and melodic intensity of their sound. This is distinguished by lead guitarist Jónsi Birgisson’s falsetto vocals and Gibson Les Paul guitar played through reverb with a well-resined cello bow, heavily amplified drums, and the use of various types of keyboards, including church organ, minimally emphatic bass, and an all-female string section called Anima who play instruments such as xylophone, celeste, a glass of water, a musical saw and a laptop. Singing both in Icelandic and an invented language called Hopelandic (vonlenska), Jónsi, who is gay and blind in one eye, channels a striking form of glossolalia in his vocals which links the group’s music to ambient rock predecessors such as the Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. As Edward D. Miller has stated, ‘Glossolalia reveals the tension between voice and signification, and exposes the communicativeness of sounds itself. The casual listener to Sigur Rós easily becomes an involved one.

  • New Album Reviews
Some Lies Are More Flexible Than Others: New Album Reviews Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world This week has seen Putin unleash his new weapon against the West in the shape of the merciless »Beast From The East«. Of course, there is no better way to last out a snow storm than with a warm blankie and some good tunes. Therefore, this week I will be singing the praises of some new records which are not only shockingly good, they will make you feel all cosy inside. By JOHN BITTLES We have some gorgeous ambiance from Recondite and Kenneth James Wilson, the lo-fi house delight of Palmbomen II, some dreamy indie from Soccer Mommy, the dub techno atmospherics of Shoreligths, and lots more. So, before the Beast starts breeding, we had better begin… After his excellent The Evening Falls album, Kenneth James Gibson returns to Cologne label Kompakt with the melancholy drenched soundscapes of his new LP. Originally conceived as an imaginary soundtrack, In The Fields Of Nothing is out on the 9th of March and according to the press release was inspired by “the steep ridges and stony paths of the San Jacinto mountains, staring at the star- studded dome or gazing into the quiet horizon of dawn”. The results are a rich, varied record full of depth and soul. Opener Hearing Unheard sounds dense and uneasy, a tension sitting heavy in the air. Much like Nick Cave and Warren Ellis‚ wonderful soundtrack for Wind River the song conjures images of open landscapes and claustrophobic lives.
