I know the title of this article looks like it’s just a catchy phrase…and that’s because it is. 76% of all readers that are captured by a title and read to the 5th sentence end up reading the entire article. That being said, 82% of all statistics are made up. But you’re still reading at this point, so I’ll go on and satisfy your curiosity! You may be among the approximately 44% of Americans who make a New Year’s resolution. This statistic is actually real according a Marist Poll taken in December 2016, but the figure fluctuates from year to year between 39-45%. The top resolutions fall into one of four categories: self-improvement or education related, weight related, money related, or relationship related resolutions. If you’re a real New Year’s resolution zealot, you might even make more than one resolution, but no matter how many resolutions you make, you’re highly likely to be among the 88% that don’t fulfill their resolution(s), and so here you are still reading this article. -

De Simone 2012 Abstract In the mid-seventeenth century Nikon, Patriarch of Moscow, introduced a number of reforms to bring the Russian Orthodox Church into ritualistic and liturgical conformity with the Greek Orthodox Church. However, Nikon‘s reforms met staunch resistance from a number of clergy, led by figures such as the archpriest Avvakum and Bishop Pavel of Kolomna, as well as large portions of the general Russian population. Nikon‘s critics rejected the reforms on two key principles: that conformity with the Greek Church corrupted Russian Orthodoxy‘s spiritual purity and negated Russia‘s historical and Christian destiny as the Third Rome – the final capital of all Christendom before the End Times. Developed in the early sixteenth century, what became the Third Rome Doctrine proclaimed that Muscovite Russia inherited the political and spiritual legacy of the Roman Empire as passed from Constantinople. In the mind of Nikon‘s critics, the Doctrine proclaimed that Constantinople fell in 1453 due to God‘s displeasure with the Greeks. Therefore, to Nikon‘s critics introducing Greek rituals and liturgical reform was to invite the same heresies that led to the Greeks‘ downfall. -

A A U S during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, Archimandrite B Sebastian Dabovich has the distinction of being the first person born in the United States of America to be ordained as an Orthodox priest, 1 and also the first native-born American to be tonsured as an Orthodox monk. His greatest distinction, however, lies in the tremen- dous apostolic, pastoral, and literary work that he accomplished dur- ing the forty-eight years of his priestly ministry. Known as the “Father of Serbian Orthodoxy in America,” 2 he was responsible for the found- ing of the first Serbian churches in the New World. This, however, was only one part of his life’s work, for he tirelessly and zealously sought to spread the Orthodox Faith to all peoples, wherever he was called. He was an Orthodox apostle of universal significance. Describing the vast scope of Fr. Sebastian’s missionary activity, Bishop Irinej (Dobrijevic) of Australia and New Zealand has written: 1 Alaskan-born priests were ordained before Fr. http://holyrosarynj.org/ENGLISH/history.html HOLY ROSARY CHURCH HISTORY, PASSAIC, NJ Although the census for 1890 showed only 3,615 Poles in New Jersey. Bishop Wigger in his report for the same year listed 5,000 Poles in the Newark Diocese alone. By 1910, the census listed 69,244 Poles in New Jersey, most of them coming from the small villages in Galicia, the Southern part of Poland. These immigrants were attracted to the mills in Passaic and Paterson, and particularly in Passaic, where German companies had established woolen and worsted mills. Poles and other nationalities were brought directly by the mill owners from Ellis Island to Passaic. Other Polish immigrants were experienced miners and they were attracted to the iron mines in Hibernia and the zinc mines in Franklin and Ogdensburg. For the most part, the Poles were overwhelmingly Catholic and devout in the practice of their religion. The earliest Polish Catholics in Passaic were forced to travel to St. Stanislaus Church, established in 1872 on East Seventh Street in Manhattan, N.Y, and later to St. Anthony's Church, established in 1884 in Jersey City. Kruczek The idea of establishing the second church in eastern Passaic (the parish of St. Joseph has existed since 1892) was formed in 1908, because the Polish population had grown to the point that St. Joseph’s church could not contain all the faithful. In 1913, a parish by the name of Mary, Queen of Poland was formed, but without the official permission to establish a formal church. -

HOLY RUSSIA IN MODERN TIMES: AN ESSAY ON ORTHODOXY AND CULTURAL CHANGE* Alas, ‘love thy neighbor’ offers no response to questions about the com- position of light, the nature of chemical reactions or the law of the conservation of energy. Christianity, . increasingly reduced to moral truisms . which cannot help mankind resolve the great problems of hunger, poverty, toil or the economic system, . occupies only a tiny corner in contemporary civilisation. — Vasilii Rozanov1 Chernyshevski and Pobedonostsev, the great radical and the great reac- tionary, were perhaps the only two men of the [nineteenth] century who really believed in God. Of course, an incalculable number of peasants and old women also believed in God; but they were not the makers of history and culture. Culture was made by a handful of mournful skeptics who thirsted for God simply because they had no God. — Abram Tertz [Andrei Siniavskii]2 What defines the modern age? As science and technology develop, faith in religion declines. This assumption has been shared by those who applaud and those who regret it. On the one side, for example, A. N. Wilson laments the progress of unbelief in the last two hundred years. In God’s Funeral, the title borrowed from Thomas Hardy’s dirge for ‘our myth’s oblivion’, Wilson endorses Thomas Carlyle’s doleful assessment of the threshold event of the new era: ‘What had been poured forth at the French Revolution was something rather more destructive than the vials of the Apocalypse. It was the dawning of the Modern’. ABSTRACT The Russian Orthodox community is a relatively small and little known group in Australian society, however, the history of the Russian presence in Australia goes back to 1809. As the Russian community includes a number of groups, both Christian and non-Christian, it would not be feasible to undertake a complete review of all aspects of the community and consequently, this work limits itself in scope to the Russian Orthodox community. The thesis broadly chronicles the development of the Russian community as it struggles to become a viable partner in Australia’s multicultural society. Many never before published documents have been researched and hitherto closed archives in Russia have been accessed. To facilitate this research the author travelled to Russia, the United States and a number of European centres to study the archives of pre-Soviet Russian communities. Furthermore, the archives and publications of the Australian and New Zealand Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church have been used extensively. The thesis notes the development of Australian-Russian relations as contacts with Imperial Russian naval and scientific ships visiting the colonies increase during the 1800’s and traces this relationship into the twentieth century. -

ISSN 0001 - 6829 Artur Patek REMARKS ON THE SITUATION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IN THE USSR IN THE INTERWAR PERIOD In recent years there has appeared more interest in the history’ of the Catholic Church in the territory of the former Soviet Union, which mast be viewed as a positive phenomenon, since because of the political conditions this was one of the more neglected issues1. Therefore I consider it useful to present the following remarks based on less frequently used archival materials. In the territory of the USSR nine units of Church administration were distinguished since 1923: the Mokhilov archdiocese, the Vladivostok (far- eastern) diocese, the Tyraspol diocese (the South Ukraine and the Volga river district), Zhitomir, Kamenets-Podohlyan, Minsk dioceses, the vicariat apostolic of Crimea and Caucasus, the vicariat apostolic of Siberia and the apostolic administration for the Catholics of Armenian denomination. The majority of them came into being only after 1917. The Minsk and Kamenets dioceses, cancelled as the result of repressions following the Polish January uprising in 1863 were reactivated respectively in 1917 and 1918 and for the move effective administration Siberian vicariat and Vladivostok diocese were isolated from the great Mokhilov archdiocese2. The spectacular gesture of Pope Pius XI, who in 1926 through his special legate bishop Michel d ’Herbigny called into being a secret Catholic hierarchy in the USSR and established eleven apostolic administrations, was of no practical conse- 1 More extensively see R.
