welcome pacific musicworks ensemble I will never forget the first Stephen Stubbs time I participated in a full music director & lute performance of the Monteverdi Joseph Adam Vespers. It was one of a handful organ of pivotal moments in my life Maxine Eilander so far when I felt that I was harp not really in control of my own Tekla Cunningham & Linda Melsted destiny. It might sound like violins hyperbole, but my experience Laurie Wells & Romeric Pokorny is that this is a work of such violas persuasive power, architectural Photo credit Jan Gates brilliance and raw beauty, that it literally changed the course William Skeen cello of my life. Christopher Jackson was the conductor of the Studio de Musique Ancienne de Montréal on that occasion Moriah Neils and I remember the joy, fascination and pure enthusiasm he bass managed to communicate to everyone involved. I was totally Bruce Dickey & Kiri Tollaksen hooked and felt so compelled and intrigued with how this cornettos work made me feel, that 25 years later, I am still spending Greg Ingles, Erik Schmalz and Mack Ramsey my time convincing anybody who will listen, that there is no sackbuts music that will make them feel luckier to be alive. Christopher Jackson died on September 25th, 2015, after a long and extremely influential career as a master of renaissance and baroque music. His inspirational work with the SMAM and as Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Concordia brought him into regular contact with hundreds of young and vancouver chamber choir aspiring musicians over the years. I will be forever grateful to him for first introducing me and many others to this wondrous music, as well as for instilling in me a desire to perform and promote art that still has the amazing power to transform lives over 400 years later.

VERSAILLES: Portrait of a Royal Domain is a spectacle from the height of Louis XIV’s reign with two chamber operas—Charpentier’s Les Plaisirs de Versailles and Lalande’s Les Fontaines de Versailles—exalting the majesty of the palace and its gardens, alongside divertissements from Lully’s Atys. Produced in partnership with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, the production will receive four performances: Saturday, November 26 and Sunday, November 27 in Boston, and Monday November 28 and Tuesday, November 29 in New York City. “The Boston Early Music Festival has enjoyed a rich experience with the French operas of the 17th century, and especially the wonderful music of Charpentier,” observes Stage Director Gilbert Blin. “His unique and rather funny Les Plaisirs de Versailles inspired us to create a production of works connected to the famous palace of Louis XIV. Together, the titles answer each other, creating a sumptuous image of the Versailles castle and gardens." The elegance and drama of these three works is brought to life by the all-star BEMF Vocal and Chamber Ensembles in a magnificent production featuring gorgeous costumes and sumptuous period staging.

PACIFIC MUSICWORKS CELEBRATES 120 Years of Stephen Stubbs & Maxine Eilander APRIL 9, 2021 The Compleat Musician A Birthday Celebration for STEPHEN STUBBS and MAXINE EILANDER The Artists as Celebrants HARRY VAN DER KAMP These are bizzare times for a musician and especially for a singer, since in the past year that noble profession has been proclaimed the most dangerous musical activity, because of the spreading of aerosols. So, in Holland, we have seen singers with mouth-masks on, still trying to express their most intimate feelings, only to find that these were blocked in a dramatic way-- causing sudden silence. Indeed, the type of silence singers have been sentenced to this entire past year. Rhetorically speaking -eine Generalpause of impossible length, -an aposiopesis, -a wound- tmesis cutting , -an endless breathtaking suspiratio. But, we are saved by Steve and Maxine’s 120th Birthday, which brings us back to life, which enables us to finally burst out in redeeming jubilation.: Congratulations to you from Holland! Harry and Marijke wish you another 120 years in happy togetherness. Hope to see you in the not too far future! Harry van der Kamp (Bass, Gesualdo Consort, University of the Arts, Bremen, Professor Emeritus) 1 The Artists as Home Builders AMANDA FORSYTHE Dear Steve and Maxine, In the many years we have been performing together, I have changed and grown and become the artist I am today, thanks in large part to your influence, your guidance, and your love of music and music making. You have welcomed me into your home, treated me with generosity and kindness, and most importantly, shown me how to lead a rich and full musical life.

  • Introduction the Very First Pioneers Œ Early Music in the 19Thcentury
Introduction —What avails it to know when the grandfather‘s uncle of a certain lutenist was baptized, or how many wives he had, if neither the lutenist‘s music nor a lute is procurable ?“. Thus wrote Arnold Dolmetsch in his book —The Interpretation of the Music of the XVIIth and XVIIIth Centuries“ in 1915. How spoiled we are these days, we lovers of the lute. An ever increasing stream of CDs, websites, magazines; lute societies everywhere, and œbuilders, -virtuoso, -amateurs all around the world. Enough reason to show our respect and gratitude to the pioneers of this revival. But herein lies the problem: who of us remembers when, how and by whom our loved instrument was undusted and got its well-deserved place in the world of music ? In the article below an attempt has been made to bring some of these pioneers back to our attention. These are not elaborate biographies, and completeness was not our purpose. The literature-list at the end will give more information. The very first pioneers œ early music in the 19th century There have always been individuals œ even at the height of the 19th century Romantic period œ who were fond of early music. Composers like Pergolesi, Bach and Palestrina were never entirely absent in our collective musical memory. For instance in Brussels early music could be heard, even in those days. Fétis and Mahillon had built an extensive collection of musical instruments, and obviously there was always the temptation not only to show those but also make them audible to an interested audience.

  • Hippolyte Et Aricie and Thank You for Joining Us in This Process of Discovery
JEAN-PHILIPPE RAMEAU Hippolyte et Aricie A scene from last fall’s Juilliard Opera production of Mozart‘s La finta giardiniera. Ito Hiroyuki by Photo A Message from Brian Zeger Artistic Director of the Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts This production of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s masterpiece Hippolyte et Aricie marks an important moment for Juilliard both as a school and a major arts presenter in New York City. The monumental operas of Rameau and Lully, while central to the history of opera, are difficult to mount, requiring a first-rate early music ensemble and a large cast of singers as well as dancers. Happily, three departments are joining forces for these performances—Juilliard Historical Performance, the Marcus Institute, and Juilliard Dance—to bring you this special production. Although Juilliard Drama is not formally represented in this show, I feel the ghost of Racine’s powerful drama Phèdre hovering by Claudio Papapietro Photo of cellist Khari Joyner Photo by Claudio Papapietro over the opera. The forbidden love of Phèdre for Hippolyte is the engine of the drama as well as a feast for a mezzo-soprano who is as much an actor as a singer. The artistic leaders of this production are a real dream team. Conductor Stephen Stubbs is one of the leading American interpreters of Baroque music and co-artistic director of the Boston Early Music Festival. Distinguished opera and theater director Stephen Wadsworth has brought countless pieces from the Baroque and Classical periods to modern audiences at Juilliard and stages around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera.

  • Monteverdi Programme For
welcome pacific musicworks ensemble I will never forget the first Stephen Stubbs time I participated in a full music director & lute performance of the Monteverdi Joseph Adam Vespers.
