When their nanny leaves, her replacement arrives one evening borne on the east wind. Mary Poppins is vain and often irritable, but within her stern exterior lurk all kinds of delightful wonder. She can slide up banisters, float in the air, Mary Poppins into pictures, stick stars on the sky, and talk to animals. Mary takes the Banks children on a series of magical adventures, such as using a magical compass to travel Mary Poppins the world. However, Mary also firmly believes in good behaviour, and disobedience is punished. The children nonetheless adore her. She is not distant and neglectful like their parents, and they find safety within the caring discipline that she brings to their lives. Perhaps most important, her ordered world still allows for exploration and excitement. Travers claimed that she did not write specifically for children and was said to be unhappy with Mary Poppins decision to market the book to younger readers. Travers Mary Poppins seven more books about Mary Poppins, the last one appearing in Travers frequently expressed her dislike of the Disney version, especially its saccharine depiction of Mary Poppins. All rights reserved. Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s.

  • Mary Poppins (Film, 1964) Pour Les Articles Homonymes, Voir Mary Poppins

  • Varro E. “Tip” Tyler Papers (1926-2001) Collection No
The Varro E. “Tip” Tyler Papers (1926-2001) Collection No. 18 Abstract The Varro E. “Tip” Tyler Papers were donated after his death in 2001 by his widow, Virginia Tyler. The collection consists of Tyler’s publications in various forms (manuscripts, reprints, and original copies), some correspondence, and some personal/professional materials, such as curriculum vitae, bibliographies, clippings, and memorabilia. Tyler was active professionally, and this aspect of his life is covered both by the publications, as well as the materials on his conferences and speaking engagements. The bulk of the collection is subject files, predominantly on various medicinal plants/herbs, which literally run A—Z. The collection consists of approximately 50 linear feet, 98 boxes. Biographical Sketch Varro E. “Tip” Tyler was born December 19, 1926 in Auburn, Nebraska, the son of a lawyer who also enjoyed botany, an enjoyment and passion he passed on to his son. Tyler had a classical education and learned to love history, poetry (which he could recite from memory – this is how he won over his future wife, Virginia “Ginny” Tyler), travel, and books. His first job was at the local corner drug store at the age of 12. He attended the University of Nebraska and was in the same fraternity as Johnny Carson, who would become famous in late-night television. His studies were briefly interrupted with a term of service in the army, but Tyler eventually completed a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at Nebraska, and then followed his mentor and friend, Arthur E. Schwarting, to the University of Connecticut, where he completed his Ph.D.
