However, when glucose becomes scarce, ethanol produced during fermentation is used as a carbon source, requiring a shift to respiration. This adaptation results in massive reprogramming of gene expression. Increased expression of genes for gluconeogenesis and the glyoxylate cycle is observed upon a shift to ethanol and, conversely, expression of some fermentation genes is reduced. The zinc cluster proteins Cat8, Sip4, and Rds2, as well as Adr1, have been shown to mediate this reprogramming of gene expression. In this study, we have characterized the gene YBR239C encoding a putative zinc cluster protein and it was named ERT1 (ethanol regulated transcription factor 1). ChIP-chip analysis showed that Ert1 binds to a limited number of targets in the presence of glucose. The strongest enrichment was observed at the promoter of PCK1 encoding an important gluconeogenic enzyme. With ethanol as the carbon source, enrichment was observed with many additional genes involved in gluconeogenesis and mitochondrial function. Use of lacZ reporters and quantitative RT-PCR analyses demonstrated that Ert1 regulates expression of its target genes in a manner that is highly redundant with other regulators of gluconeogenesis. -

In order to investigate the effects of P levels on yield components and grain yield On-station field experiments were conducted in two sites of western Kenya during the long and short rain seasons of 2015. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete -1 Block Design in factorial arrangement with four levels of P (0, 12.5, 25 and 37.5 kg P2O5 ha and three finger millet varieties (U-15, P-224 and a local check-Ikhulule) and the treatments replicated three times. The increase of phosphorus levels significantly (P≤0.05) increased the grain yield -1 -1 over the control up to 25 kg P2O5 ha during the long rain seasons and 25 kg P2O5 ha during the short rain seasons in both sites. -

Bob Beer’s Boza Recipe The easiest way to make boza is from boza! So, if you have some already to use as starter (see our resource links), skip to Part B (Making the boza itself). If you aren’t fortunate to have an awesome Turkish neighbor, or a Balkan deli making the stuff in your neighborhood, you need to establish your own starter. Many online recipes will tell you to use "yeast." BUT -- there is a problem in translation here! In Turkish, the word used for yeast (maya) is a very general term that refers to anything used as a starter, whether it's for cheese, yogurt, boza, bread, etc. But these are all different organisms. If you do use store-bought bread yeast, your product will be heavily alcoholic, and that's (well, maybe) not what you want. (The Greeks and Armenians of Istanbul made a more alcoholic version but it wasn't considered halal by Muslims. I don’t know how they did this, or how they kept the starter from going acidic, and I have never seen a written source about their process.) This may eventually go acidic because of secondary fermentation, like vinegar production. A sourdough starter will reportedly work, and so will yogurt, but they don’t give the greatest results. However, they may “adjust” over time. PART A: Establishing your starter from scratch (Bob’s sort-of shortcut version): INGREDIENTS: 1/4 c. grain (millet, bulgur, rice, cornmeal, rye) My favorite grain to use is millet – the best boza in Turkey (Vefa, for example) is made from millet. -

Due to its natural drought and salinity tolerance, quinoa has emerged as an agronomically important crop for production in marginal soils, in highly variable climates, and as part of diverse crop rotations. Primary areas of quinoa research have focused on improving resistance to abiotic stresses and disease, improving yields, and increasing nutrition. However, an evolving issue impacting quinoa seed end-use quality is preharvest sprouting (PHS), which is when seeds with little to no dormancy experience a rain event prior to harvest and sprout on the panicle. Far less is understood about the mechanisms that regulate quinoa seed dormancy and seed viability. This review will cover topics including seed dormancy, orthodox and unorthodox dormancy programs, desiccation sensitivity, environmental and hormonal mechanisms that regulate seed dormancy, and breeding and non-breeding strategies for enhancing resistance to PHS in quinoa. Joinpoint regression was performed to estimate trends in the age-standardized prevalence of alcohol consumption. Associations of demographic and behavioral factors, perceived health- related effects, social relationships, and the diagnostic history of diseases with alcohol consumption were assessed using multinomial logistic regression. -
