I received a message from a friend who is a sculptor living in Ireland, saying unexpectedly that she would come over to Japan with her sister, the sister’s husband and the couple’s daughter. She said that they planned this big trip to exploit the fact that her sister’s son happened to be in Tokyo as an exchange student at Waseda University. All five of them visited me at my atelier in Kawasaki. Since it was spring vacation at the university, they rented a car next day and took a wonderful long trip to Owari Province (the western half of Aichi Prefecture) to see several historical castles; then to Kyoto; then to Naoshima Island to see modern artworks, including those of Yayoi Kusama in the Seto 2 Inland Sea; the Dogo Hot Spring in Matsuyama; and the public hot spring baths in Takamatsu. They then drove to Ohara in Kyoto, Lake Kawaguchi, and finally back in Tokyo. A wonderful trip as a result of careful and smart planning! They even were able to admire the cherry blossoms which were in full bloom and continued to bloom as they went north. They also were able to swim in the sea. How energetic my Irish friends were! 河口湖町には私の山荘がある。と言えば聞こえはいいが作品と資材の保管場所である。たまに宴 会場。さて、彼女たちはうちの山荘に来るのではなく別にアコモデーションを予約していた。地元 の人に聞いても知らないその宿は、昨年暮れにオープンしたばかりの元民宿を改装した古民家であ った。妙にこのところ観光客が増えてきたな、と思っていたが彼らは富士山が大好きなのだ。久し ぶりに河口湖町駅前を車で通ったら英語の看板の天丼屋など、すっかり国際化していたし、そう言 えばここ二回、立て続けにヒッチハイクのフレンチ、オーストラリアンに出くわした。 I have a cottage in the town of Fujikawaguchiko (formally called Fujikawaguchiko- machi) near Lake Kawaguchi. I use it mainly as storage space for my artworks and materials - and occasionally for parties. However, my friends had made reservations at a private old-Japanese-style house. Since that accommodation had just opened late the previous year, its reputation had not yet spread even among the local people. No wonder I recently noted increasing numbers of tourists, seemingly from abroad, in this area, where they can enjoy wonderful views of Mt. In 1996 I visited Ireland for the first time, when I was invited to participate in an International Sculpture Symposium. Since then I visited Ireland several times, returning to Japan each time with many wonderful memories. In particular, I should mention the unforgettable fireplaces that are commonly seen in the old houses in Ireland. I was familiar with fireplaces since my parents had one in the house where I used to live in Kawasaki, but it was merely ornamental, without a chimney on the roof. The artists I met in Ireland were mostly sculptors. As they needed large spacious studios for their work, they often lived in old farmhouses, with a barn, which they renovated by installing the necessary equipment. In the old Irish houses, including farmhouses, there is a fireplace in the living room. These old houses have survived for decades and even centuries because there are no earthquakes in Ireland. The age of such old houses can be estimated from the appearance of the dry-stone walls. http://www.dswai.ie/what-is-a-dry-stone-wall The Irish traditionally burn peat, cut into brick-sized pieces, in their fireplaces. The peat is extracted from peat bogs. The houses, as compared with those in the United States, are generally small and the compact size of the studio-living room and kitchen are familiar to me and feel comfortable. Moreover, the heat generated by the fireplace is enough to keep the entire house warm. One such combined studio and home that I visited stood alone on a hilltop, surrounded by a well-kept lawn with a patch of pampas grass. Both sunrise and sunset could be enjoyed from there, as well as an extensive view of the countryside. https://cottageology.com/irish-cottage-history/ https://search.yahoo.co.jp/image/search?rkf=2&ei=UTF-8&gdr=1&p=thatched+roof+Ir eland+farmer%27s+house 河口湖町の山荘はそんな感じに近づいた。ゴルフ場の樹木を切ってくれたおかげで、うちからも 陽が昇り夕方の黄昏までを眺めることができるようになった。庭はさして広くはないが。訳あって 川崎の家を手放すことになり、私一人近くのアトリエに仮住まいしたはいいが、処分しきれなかっ た家財道具の保管に困り果てあちこち探した末、河口湖町にたどり着いた。2006 年のことだ。決 め手は暖炉である。その中古物件の居間には暖炉が据え付けてあった。熱効率が悪いからストーブ に変えたらどうか、とよく言われるがいいや、私は断固として暖炉派である。冬が楽しみで、着い たらまず暖炉に薪をくべる。冷え切った RC 構造の家屋は帰る頃にようやく暖まる。街中で暮らす 友はこの住まいを、そんな不便なところ、と言ってくる。が、私にとっては何でもない。アイルラ ンドにステイした頃、病気になっても買い物に行くのでも、アイリッシュタイムで暮らしたのだ。 アイリッシュタイムのアイルランド、思い出すのはどこへ行ってもおしなべてなだらか、起伏に欠 ける。 高い山でも数百メートル。 次第に日本の山々が恋しくなってくるから不思議なものである。 学生時代山岳部だったので、山荘から眺める南アルプスは格別の思いがある。北岳から聖岳まで縦 4 走したし、鳳凰三山も登った。ちなみに山荘は海抜 1200m の山麓、背中が富士山、居間からは木 立が枯れると本栖湖が望める。その本栖湖を中心に右から北岳、間ノ岳、塩見岳、特に冠雪の季節 にはっきり見える。 アイルランドでの体験が私を河口湖町に導いた。川崎から 134 キロメートル、いつまで続くか 分からないが、川崎と河口湖町と行ったり来たりしている。 The surroundings of my cottage in the town of Fujikawaguchiko have improved recently, with respect to the view, because the trees on the golf course nearby have been removed with the remodeling of the golf course. Consequently, I too can now enjoy both sunrise and sunset, with an extensive view. Several years ago, I had to leave my parents’ house in Kawasaki and moved temporarily into my atelier near the house. I had to leave most of my household goods behind and needed to find a permanent place for them. After looking for a house here and there, I finally visited the town of Fujikawaguchiko, in 2006, and I found a secondhand cottage there that seemed close to ideal. The deciding factor was a fireplace in the living room. In winter, as soon as I arrive at the cottage, the first thing I do is put wood in the grate and light a fire. However, it is true that the freezing-cold living room in my reinforced-concrete home becomes comfortably warm only right before the time I leave the house. I have often been advised to use a heater or stove because the fireplace is so inefficient. However, I do continue to use the fireplace. Friends who live in the town are surprised to find my cottage located in such a remote place. But I don’t care, as I am used to the lovely slow life, experienced in “Irish time,” that includes long-distance trips to the doctor and to market. Ireland is characterized by rather flat land with mountains of at most a thousand meters elevation. When I was staying in Ireland, I confess that I felt homesick for the mountainous regions of Japan. I was a member of the Alpine Club when I was in college and I am very attached to the beautiful view of the Akaishi Mountains, also called the Southern Alps, which I can see from my cottage. I used to walk along the ridge line from Mount Kita to Mount Hijiri, and I’ve climbed up to Hōō Sanzan. As my cottage is 1,200 meters above sea level on the northern slope of Mt. Fuji, I also enjoy beautiful views of Mount Kita, Mount Aino, and Mt. Shiomi, beyond Lake Motosu. It’s fascinating to see the lake backed by these snow-capped mountains in winter, when the leaves that obstruct my view in summer have fallen. Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively).

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The hiraiwai-subgroup of the Leiobunum curvipalpe-species group (Opiliones: Sclerosomatidae: Leiobuninae) is revised on the basis of somatic morphology, genitalia and karyotypes. This subgroup is distributed mainly in the mountainous areas of the Japanese Beech (Fagus crenata) forest zone (usually above 700 m in altitude in the southwestern part of Japan) in the western part of the Japanese Islands and corresponds to a single polytypic species, Leiobunum hiraiwai (Sato & Suzuki, 1939) with eight geographic races. Leiobunum tamanum Suzuki, 1957 and L. tsushimense Suzuki, 1976 are here synonymized with L. hiraiwai. All the races, except for the Tsushima race, were chromosomally analyzed. The number of chromosomes varies geographically from 2n = 18 to 22 eastwards, irrespective of the variation in somatic morphology or male genitalia. Component chromosomes in these karyotypes are invariably metacentric or submetacentric in structure. Some morphological characters show a geographic pattern of variation that conforms to the stasipatric model of speciation. The possible processes of geographical differentiation of the species and direction of character evolution are inferred on the basis of such geographical patterns. The distribution of some character states suggests that the closest relative of the subgroup is the curvipalpe-subgroup (= Leiobunum curvipalpe Roewer, 1910 and L.

Geologically speaking, this part of the globe is on.e of typically unstable crust, hence the Japanese often ex- perience severe earthquakes. Besides, the western part of the Peri-Pacific Volcanic Zone runs from the KamÅëhatka Peninsula via the Kuriles, Hokkaido, Honsltu, Kyushu, Ryukyu and to the Phillipine Is}ands. Both the presence of the eartltquake zone and severe vulcanism, together with the steep slopes of the mountains wkich occupy almost all of the country, have resulted in many lakes and ponds in the Japanese Islands. The total numbey of them is about 600 ln this small in.".u}ar country, which is almost equal in area to the State Montana of the United States. They are, moreover, not only numerous but sorae are very important Iakes from the viewpoint of both limnology and geology.

But at the time, due to the rain on the second day, I was able to climb only Mount Kaikoma (refer to Episode 018). So, I aim at the Mount Senjo, which I could not conquer last year. This time I have decided to stay in a mountain hut and chosen a weekend on account of the weather and my schedule. Approaching the Southern Alps by your own vehicle is restricted, so you need to use bus or taxi to get there. On Saturdays and Sundays, the first bus is available earlier than on weekdays and heavily crowded. I have arrived at Ashiyasu parking lot at 5:15, about one hour before the first bus. But the parking lots around the area seem to have already been full and I have to get back to the fifth parking lot, which is an about 10-minute walk to the bus stop. I quickly pack up my belongings and get to the bus station, where I see a long line already there. The first three buses have been parked. I manage to take a seat in the third bus and many passengers fill even the aisle of it.
