    Athens Journal of Mediterranean Studies- Volume 5, Issue 3 – Pages 185-206 The Evacuation of the Idomeni Refugee Camp: A Case of Discursive and Iconographical Representation on Digital Media By Andrea Pelliccia By using the Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis, this paper focuses on the visual and textual representation of refugees in the online version of two influential newspapers in Greece. The analysis examines the particularities and significance of news coverage of a critical event in Greece and Europe during 2016 that is the evacuation of the Idomeni refugee camp. The results show that in the media representation of refugees and asylum seekers, cultural clichés and the perpetuation of an essentialist discourse emerge systematically in a vicious circle. Through their representational frames, both newspapers reveal a tendency to more a homogenization of views and explanations than to provide a plurality of opinions. Using an institutional and generalist approach based on monodimensional formats, they thus contribute to perpetuating a dispositive suitable for pre-existing social representations and stereotypes. Keywords: Idomeni refugee camp, migrants’ representation, online newspapers, refugee crisis. Introduction: Research Objective and Methodological Approach The choice of online media is due to the fact that they are now part of the social, economic and cultural life of many societies, and are accessible to public, and are different from print-based newspapers, while reaching a younger audience (Newman et al. 2016). On the one hand, online newspapers tend to reproduce journalism culture of printed newspapers with their approach to storytelling, in values and relationship with readers. On the other hand, technological features of online platform – hypertext, interactivity, multimedia – have implications for the entire media production process (Deuze 2003): electronic consultation – due to the variety of textual typologies, consultation modes, and contextual elements – configures a new and specific system compared to paper-based newspapers.

Open Cultural Center 2 New paradigms spring up but the axes have not yet been defined. The system can change, renew itself, but the structures remain the same over the years. We realise that certain trends persist: inequalities in access to education or to a job vacancy; some areas are accessible, and others have more obstacles to access. Closed borders for some and approving gazes for others. These are the daily borders, so common that, following the example of public institutions, they can be legitimised or just ‘normal’. Borders exist also between newcomers (economic migrants, refugees or asylum seekers), and those who have lived in Europe for generations (Europeans as well as people of foreign origin). These borders can be experienced within the school setting despite their invisibility. Education has always allowed us to understand a society and its context, and helped us to diagnose the ills that affect it. Hence the interest of social and humanistic experts (philosophers, sociologist, historian, psychologists, economists, geographers), and the technological and biological fields (doctors, engineers) in how education is being implemented in a specific area, either by the state either or by a community.

    The project «EU Border Communities: sharing experiences and practices on refugees’ reception and social solidarity» - EUBorCo was funded with the support of the European Union under the Programme "Europe for Citizens" Strand 2 - Measure 2.2 "Networks of Towns" Five (5) events have been carried out within this project: Event 1 Participation: The event involved 78 citizens, including 13 participants from the City of Paionia and Unesco Youth Club of Thessaloniki (Greece), 3 participants from the city of Gevgelija (Republic of North Macedonia), 5 participants from the City of Is-Swieqi and KITE Factory (Malta), 2 participants from the City of Viator (Spain), 1 from the City of Brindisi and 54 participants from the Association CIVITAS SOLIS and the City of Roccella Jonica (Italy). Location / Dates: The event took place in the City of Roccella Jonica, Italy, from 16/02/2019 to 19/02/2019 and it was organised by the Association CIVITAS SOLIS. Short description: The aim of the event was to inaugurate the dialogue and the exchange of experiences and good practices among the partner cities and organisations concerning the challenges they face on refugees’ reception and social solidarity. The agenda of the 3-day transnational event included networking activities with the participation of the local associations and neighboring municipalities, study visits in the village of Camini to explore the work done by Jungi Mundu regarding refugees’ support and inclusion and also to Gioiosa Jonica to learn about the services developed by Eurocoop Servizi Association to the local community of refugees. In the epicenter of the 3-day transnational event was the organization of a public conference in the former convent of the Minimi (Roccella Jonica) entitled “The role of local communities in the promotion of active citizenship, volunteering and solidarity” and an open discussion held in the City Hall of Gioiosa Jonica with about the promotion of a very active citizenship in Europe and the exchange of experiences on refugees’ crisis management and social solidarity.
